Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

One of our more subtle players with a nice eye for a pass. I really like the way he strikes the ball, it reminds me of Kranjcar at his best. I just wish Siggy had more pace/acceleration/'explosiveness' naturally - I think this is why he looks better as a sub, because he can play with real urgency if he expends all he's got but he can't keep up that intensity for more than 20 minutes. I was reminded of this when I rewatched the Basel away game - he tried hard all night but was looking reeeally leggy by the second half.

If he were more dynamic, I think he could cement the CAM spot for himself - he knows where the goal is, he's good at link up, a willing presser, and clever (if in fits and bursts). I just worry it's easy for him to drift out of the game though in that cramped central area, because he can't get away from a marker and he doesn't have that quick brain/close control of a Silva, Mata etc.

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

Siggy is a great prospect and I want him to be heavily involved next season. Just has something about him that says he will fight for the cause

I've quoted Papercut's post from the ITK thread to keep this on topic and because I agree 100%.

He is settled in the squad now and imo has great vision and the potential to be integral to any success we have next season. That outside of the boot through ball for Defoes hat trick the other day was quality and I believe he can produce that regularly given time on the pitch. More time = more goals from him too.

I'd be gutted if he were to be sold.

Completely agree, i've got a good feeling about Siggy. I think he just tried to hard at times (the few times he had an oppurtunity)to be involved and chase the game. Some good moments though.

He is much better when the game comes to him, he looks a natural then. Well he did at Swansea.

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

I like Siggy but I cannot see him ever being anything more than a squad player for us

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

My opinion is closer to skyfar and milo than some of the more positive posters here. I too worry about his lack of pace/athleticism, and I'm not quite convinced that he has the ability on the ball to compensate for that to the level where he becomes a first choice player for us (or any team chasing a top 4 finish in the PL).

A couple of questions to those of you who think that Sig will become an integral part of our starting 11 relatively quickly:

1. Which players at bigger teams do you compare him to, in terms of playing style and ability?

2. What do you see as his best position in both a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-3-3 formation?

3. In what way do you expect him to develop in the coming season?

4. Which other top teams do you think he would be a regular starter in?

Not in any way saying that I don't like him or that I want to see him sold btw. He's a good player and if he can start scoring regularly for us like he has for other clubs in the past he will obviously be useful. I just don't quite see how he becomes a clear first choice player at this point.

1) Lampard

2) 4-2-3-1 (on the left of the attacking 3) ...4-3-3 (as the atatcking central midfielder in the 3)

3) Score more goals and get involved more in general play.

4) Regular? think he'd get a decent amount of games at most of the top clubs but maybe not be a regular starter.

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

Sigurdsson's lack of pace? I must be missing something, he is not slow at all. And unless you want to be a winger, you don't need pace anyway if you have skill and technical ability ie Kranjcar which funnily enough he has....

Lampard is probably the most interesting comparison to make. His first season scoring 10 or more league goals in a season was his third season at Chelsea (wiki). There are some similarities between him and Sig, obviously very ambitious to expect a similar development, but if he can keep improving his ability to score goals, get better at finding space and timing his run Sig could be a very good player.

Seems a bit odd to compare him most to Lampard, but then say his best position in a 4-2-3-1 is as the left attacking midfielder - somewhere that Frank has never really played.

I don't understand why no-one seems to see him as a No.10...

Firstly, i have just noticed he is coming up to 24yrs (thought he was younger), so the next 2 seasons are vital if he is to develop and nail down a position with us. To do that he will need a bit of faith from AVB and hopefully communicate where he thinks his best position is.

With our squad it is very easy for some players to just fill in gaps, chop and change positions and maybe only get 20mins as an impact sub. All these scenarios i believe are detrimental to a player with Siggy's qualities. I agree with another poster, i think his best position would be as a number 10 and Siggy needs to be bold enough (if he agrees!) to say thats where he wants to play.

I don't think he lacks pace but don't think he is quick either, but i do think you are under estimating his ability on the ball. I think centrally he can find space, and find a pass.(may suit are striker with good movement) Not discounting his proven ability to create a bit of space and find the net himself. He can chip in with a good quota goals so you would not want to nullify this quality. (which can happen when he plays too wide, a position not doing him any favours). imo he is the type of player that could be effective against the teams that are hard to break down.

1> Kagawa, Ozil, Reus

2> 4-2-3-1 middle of the 3....tricky with 4-3-3, have to be 1 of the wide forwards and depends on AVB instructions

3>Sadly AVB might use him in a similar way to last season.....unless there are injuries.

This is something that stands out to me - he seems the most likely and most able to pick out a well-placed through ball.

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

Twitter / Squawka: Gylfi Sigurdsson bossing things vs Norwich. 100% pass accuracy and got the goal too. Brilliant.

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

He needs to do a lot more to convince me he can play for us but I was a fan before he signed and ill give him a chance.

He has confidence in himself (from what I've read) so I guess he needs a manager to have that confidence in him too and to play him

It helps that him and eriksen were on the same wave length

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

I think that graph actually shows he's much more a finisher of moves than a real playmaker like Eriksen - he's not getting on the ball much there, but he is careful with the passes he makes and he is clearly pretty clever with his runs and finishes. He doesn't quite have the extrasensory perception, vision, and hunger for the ball a natural playmaker has - but as a floating striker of sorts, he's pretty damn useful. His defensive work ethic really seems to have gone up under AVB too, which is necessary when you have a FB as eager as Rose behind you.

Good post. He always reminds me of a slightly more cultured Clint Dempsey (in a wholly good way). Similarly both worked best coming in from the left.

I think Eriksen showed us exactly what we've been missing (and also what Gylfi can't provide to the team) in the game on Saturday. The boy is class.

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

My player of the season so far. To stay in this team despite all the purchases and perform to the level he has is incredible. Really stepped it up this season and looks such a threat whenever he shoots - he's never far away from scoring. He's getting more confident and driving into the box more. With him, Paulinho, Townsend and Eriksen we have loads of goals in our midfield!

Re: Gylfi Sigurdsson

He is now our top scorer in the league with 3 goals. Not bad for a midfielder. He would have had more if all those shots which hit the posts had gone in. Hope Soldado will find it embarassing and start scoring again soon.

Amazing there are not more posts about him. He has plenty more development in him. If he can toughen up or get smarter in tackles he could become our Lampard.

Early days, though.

Why the constant comparisons with Lampard? They play different positions. Lampard never plays out wide and Siggy never plays in central midfield.
