Yea he won't be starting away at Cardiff if heading is one of his weakest points. May be dangerous to play him against benteke at villa as well? Unless this heading weakness is being overplayed?

Would have been perfect to debut against tromso actually.

Of all games this season (bar potentially the last EL group stage games if we've already qualified at that stage) the game that matters the least this season is surely the game against Aston Villa?

Yes, if we get to the quarter finals I would like to see us give the league cup a go, but if we are to go out I would rather see us go out in the first game rather than later on as we'll have plenty of fixtures to worry about.

Will be a fine test for Chiriches if he starts, a challenge for sure, but one without the consequences that a league game might have.

the 'reviews' I've read have been about 50/50 on him and we've gotten rid of one of the better players our academy has produced in the last five years to bring him in.

Massive risk in my mind. Going to have to see how he adapts to the league... Especially as he's already 23, he should be much closer to being the finished product being 2 years older than caulker.

For me at least Baldini, AVB, Levy and our scouts deserve the benefit of the doubt, at the very least up until we've actually seen Chiriches play.

Yeah they do, I'll wait until I see him before making my mind up about his ability as a player. Would be a bit silly to make my mind up before watching him myself.

They've made a number of good signings, I guess it's just that I don't expect them to get every one right and currently the other six of their purchases are looking decent. Just pessimistic I guess.

I just know people will be writing other stuff on here once you get to see him play. I'm not a huge fan of Romanian players, I know their weak spots and their attitude is not always what you'd want to see (most of them anyway..), but he is different. Yeah, he still needs to improve in some areas, but no player is perfect. Football these days heavily relies on IQ as well and you can get away with your weaknesses using your anticipation and positioning to stay in front of the ball - and Vlad does that very well.

So yeah, lets wait until you see him play and we`ll discuss after that

I think we need a trophy this season full stop. I think we need some of the players to feel like we are progressing and by getting some of them a medal we can buy ourselves time to get things right longer term. We should have won a trophy in the intervening period anyway but I definitely want us to take the League Cup seriously. At the end of the day, a final is a final and a trophy in the cabinet and record books can never be taken away.

It also will hopefully give AVB a boost and help him kick us on to bigger trophies and challenges on a more permanent basis.

Right now we have enough quality to cope, but if an injury crisis struck I'd make the league the priority unless it was at least a semi final in the League Cup, quarters for the other two. This is all very hypothetical, as we will never know how the other option would turn out in the end, but no amount of league cup trophies would come close to us challenging for the league title. I'd easily put out a B-team against Villa if I as manager thought that would make the difference against Chelscum.

I would love to see us at another Wembley final this season, don't misunderstand me.

But with the amount of fixtures ahead of us I think some prioritization should be made and for me the league and EL are both more important.

Didn't notice him tonight except for a little forage he had late on.

Not noticing CBs (as I used to compliment Caulker about) is a good thing. But Caulker didn't (can't?) do the forage thing.

Promising but not exceptional debut. Had a few dodgy moments and his dribbles out of defence were similar to Kaboul in his first stint at Spurs i.e. causing mild heart palpitations.

Found it interesting that AVB moved him to right back after the Walker sub. Think he might be seen long-term as a defensive right back for when we are looking for a bit more rigidity.

It's the way he plays really, but what I have learned in 1,5 years he played at Steaua, instead of being afraid of him coming out with the ball you should embrace it and look forward to that moment of the game. Of course he gave us mild heart palpitations at first too, but as we grew confidence in his ability( we did not get scored upon EVER because of his dribbling) I started, like I said, to look forward to his lunatic " I have the ball try and get it" attitude. We laugh, we make bets on how far he will go . Today when he started that one in the second half, he was a bit shy probably because of his debut, he usually goes near the opposition box with the ball, coming from our own box

It does make me a little worried for Kaboul's long-term fitness though, that we've gotten a CB who is so much like him. Not that I would ever say no to another Kaboul, I'd just like to give Chiriches a bit more time and space to settle in properly and that's a bit hard when we only have two fit senior CBs. On the plus side, it looks like Vlad can cover Walker too, and give us that attacking RB option with Naughton as the more defensive type.

I think that he needs to be more aggressive towards crosses and high balls. The Villa CF got several free headers/flick-ons today. Kaboul and Dawson would have gotten to those first and clean the guy out.

He'll be great when he gets settled. Was a bit nervous tonight I thought early on, but settled later. His run up the pitch was great. Looks a very Spurs player.

I don't think he's that similar to Kaboul. Other than them both being prone to go forward with the ball at their feet (or at least Kaboul did this earlier in his career), and both being at least good on the ball. Kaboul is a lot taller and stronger than Chiriches I think. Caulker seemed to me more similar to Kaboul than Chiriches does.

I didn't notice him being passive against crosses. And I actually noticed him doing quite well with at least one cross up against the much taller Helenius where he did the right thing and just took the duel head on without fear and just made sure Helenius didn't win it cleanly.

For the long balls he need to be more careful and pick his moments imo. It's great when a central defender steps up and wins those, but it can be really bad when they lose that initial duel as they're then out of position and on the ground doing nothing for a second or two. For someone who isn't the strongest in the air to be very aggressive going for many of those duels isn't a good idea I think.

Not a foregone conclusion that Dawson or Kaboul would have cleaned the guy out when the guy in question was Helenius who is 1.95 m (6 ft 5 in).

yes but there is a big difference in quality between the leagues.....losing the ball because of his dribbling against Botosani cannot be compared with if he did the same against lets say Fulham. Mistakes are more harshly punished in the PL

good debut overall though. There is talent there and he will improve in time

Agreed. I think a few players coming into the PL have noticed that difference. Kaboul and David Luiz for example.

Chriches needs to be smart about it. Nothing wrong with a centre back driving into space when a bit of it opens up ahead of him and there are players to cover for him. We've seen Vertonghen do this to great effect. Also nothing wrong with a defender using his abilities on the ball to make sure we keep possession, like Vlad did yesterday when controlling the ball under a bit of pressure close to the sideline. But he needs to make those smart decisions and pick his moments. The last thing he needs is to be left standing as the spacegoat after making a high profile error with one of his dribbles.
