Jol had his flaws as well. Never could understand this undying love so many have for him. We were definitely declining towards the end of his tenure and he was clueless when it came to sorting things that were blindingly obvious. He's similar to Harry when it comes to man-management, if you're not one of his favorites you might as well be invisible.

all good managers.

The only difference is that i think AVB is the first one that actually has the fortune to work under the right DoF and is the only one that has the true backing of Levy and the Board.

I have always said this, AVB is levy's boy. Levy will take care of him and make him feel goooood

This is proving to be very true.

Let's see when we next reach the last 8 of the CL.

Is that what you're basing Redknapps whole tenure on? The fact we got to the last 8 of the CL?

Yet he then failed to get us to that very competition two years in a row? I'm not going to get into any arguments, I liked Redknapp when he was here, he got us playing the best football I have seen us play in my lifetime but you can't bring that last 8 of CL thing up as a basis to his "success", he also got us fudged over by relegated portsmouth side in an FA Cup Semi final, not to mention the 5-1 embarassment to Chelsea.

For me the most exciting football we played was under Redknapp in his last two seasons, where we could tip a game on its head in a second, putting the game to bed with two counter attacking goals. I loved watching Spurs then, knowing we didn't need to play well to win, and didn't really need to graft out games since we could score out of nothing (when Ade was on fire and when Sir Alex said we played the best footie in the league). The memories here are also tinged with a bright hue of Champions League underdog glory.

Jol arguably had the toughest task of turning Spurs into genuine CL contenders, a feat that withstood all before who tried. We played attractive attacking minded footie here too. He was my favourite character of all the managers in the last decade, especially in comparison to his predecessor.

The thing that has pleased me most about AVB (apart from he fame in bringing players to the club), is that we developed a late goal mentality - which was very unSpurslike. I don't find our footie as attractive as the above two managers, but we started doing things we never did before - things which always grated at our nerves like never scoring from Free kicks.

I am still left to wonder what would have happened if Redknapp would have stayed on - because I am convinced we would have only got better and better, from the 4th that we finished that year. I had real high hopes for the season to follow - thinking it would bring more fluidity and goal of the months.

Who shares / rebukes this viewpoint?

Too early to say about AVB. In terms of entertaining football my favourite recent era was under Redknapp. He also achieved Champion's League football and still had us finishing 5th despite a CL campaign which I wouldn't have believed possible.

But it was under Arnesen/Jol that our revival started and it's amazing how quickly anticipation has become expectation from our fans. Jol was undermined massively by Comolli and I have often wondered what success we'd have had if that hadn't happened.

I think we're gearing up for the AVB era to be our best era in terms of results, simply because finally Levy appears to be backing a Manager with money in anticipation of future success. I just hope it's not because he is resigned to losing Bale and we are spending that money now. I want it to be as well as Bale staying. I have two massive reservations towards AVB at the moment, that I am hoping will be unfounded. One is that we're becoming a foreign legion. Two is that we are creating a brute force team that will batter down opponents via set pieces and long shots rather than play through/around them with guile and skill. I want us to compete playing the Spurs way not the City/Chelsea borefest way of winning the titles they've won. I'm not sure AVB has it in him to be able to create an entertaining footballing side.

Jol was probably the most likeable of the three, has the job of making us best of the rest (gap was still too wide to say he made us truly CL contenders)

I wouldn't say the gap was too wide when we had a rancid Lasagne that fateful day!

I'd base it on the fact that we qualified for it in the first place, and if it wasn't for a very unfortunate twist of fate we'd have done it twice. I also base it on the fact that we finished top five for three seasons in a row and that he saved us from relegation. Anyone who doesn't think, given recent Spurs history, they aren't achievements is a fudging idiot who needs to stop supporting the club I love (and probably stop following football, because they clearly know fudge all about it) and go and live in whatever la la land their mind is in.

No, I'm just saying that was the a massive achievement and one I don't see us repeating. As for AVB, well he's failed to get CL in 1 out of 1 season and that was whilst playing absolutely turgid football.

Indeed. So close, yet so far.

The strangest thing under Jol is that we went from having lots of decent defensive midfielders (and in Carrick one of the two best in the Premiership) to having Zokora and that is why we fell to pieces. What's even stranger is that this glaring problem wasn't resolved until Redknapp brought in Palacios. So that to me stinks of Comolli's work rather than any deficiency from Jol/Ramos.

Players such as?

He wanted Rossi .. Mata ... Cazorla ...

But when those players weren't gettable who was next on the list? I remember him stating that he wanted Tevez too, but when he wasn't gettable who was the next target? Saha?

This summer we've reportedly and seemingly moved from David Villa to Benteke to Soldado in weeks when the first two of those didn't pan out.

I can't remember something like that happening under Redknapp, any manager can draw up a list of players they want that are just at the edge between plausible and impossible and have a good few players on there.

I agree that they are all good managers.

I do wonder how Redknapp was able to spend £40-45m on Defoe, Palacios, Keane and Chimbonda in his first transfer window followed by another £25m+ on Crouch, Bassong, Kranjcar and the Kyles in his second transfer window without the true backing of Levy and the board. I also wonder how much we would have spent if they had backed him...

:ross: :ross:

You really think after EIGHT games we were destined for relegation. He didn't SAVE us from relegation at all. He got us to a respectable league position that year too and got us performing very well the following year with an outstanding squad to get us Champions League football. He did well in the CL and we did well in the league. He flopped hard in his final few months at the club causing us to miss out on the CL by finishing third.

It was an achievement yes, but he has nothing to show for it. No trophies, no silverware, nothing. He gave us some memorable nights, just like Jol did, just like AVB has done, heck even Juande Ramos gave us memorable nights. Who was the better of the three? fudge knows, who the fudge cares, I support Tottenham, they've all been brilliant to us in their own ways but AVB is our manager right now so how about we just get behind him instead of living in the fudging past, yeah?

We keep Bale, then we'll hit it under AVB this year. If we don't, his job is on the line. He has been seriously backed in the transfer market and has the best squad we've ever had.

Depends what way you look at it really. Redknapp had 3 full seasons here and got us CL football once. Lets see how AVB has done after 3 full years, I mean after his first full season he had us finish on more points than Redknapp ever managed. Sure, he didn't get CL football but I suppose that was as unlucky as Redknapp missing out after finishing fourth.

Yes, because the performances were brick. 2pts from 8 games equates to less than 10pts over a season. We were in deep deep trouble.

And so the past doesn't matter? Bill Nick doesn't matter? Keith doesn't matter? The great players that played for us, but didn't win a trophy don't matter? And you claim to support Spurs? Jesus wept.

Well I'm just going by what Harry himself said. I don't think he ever said anything about Carlton Cole or Anton Ferdinand but yeah he wanted the other two, he had his flaws but I think he built a very good, attractive footballing side and one that could've been even better with a bit more backing. The current team are dreadful to watch.

Out of curiosity what words would you use to describe our football during the mid to late '90s and early '00s on the scale that has our current football described as absolutely turgid and dreadful?

How far away do we feel AVB is away from constructing a team which plays how he intends us to play?

AVB has us playing like a team that is hard to beat as proven by his Premier League results. We are a hard team to beat, we don't know when to quit and I am very glad he's installed that into the squad. With Soldado I hope we can get those goals that we have missed over the years. So many times in tight games last year we had Defoe or Adebayor miss a sitter, I hope Soldado can transform those into goals.

Okay then, if Harry didn't come in, we'd have got relegated.

BILL NICK AND KEITH WON brick!!! They will always be remembered. But comparing our current manager to any of those is LIVING IN THE PAST. Why are you doing it? Why is anyone doing it. Why can't we have a positive thread on here for once, why is it always comparing the current to the past, I don't get it. We have a team genuinely capable of fighting for a top four finish, we finally spend big money on players, we finally buy a world class striker, have some real great players at the club across all positions yet people still feel the need to criticize or bring up the past.

I have no doubt if we had beaten Espanyol today this thread probably wouldn't have come up.

He'll score. He's good the quality and history. I think we need to upgrade Dawson and I suspect AVB thinks that too

11 votes in the poll so far and yet not one for Redknapp?, strange seeing as there are those who are kissing his arse :)
