New Striker or New Stadium?

Dempsey and Sigurdsson (plus the noises of Hopper!) - Sigclearly with the possibility of a great re-sale - vintage DL move. Take the first 2 away, add 3-4m and bring in Willian for argument's sake - a player who would add exponentially more than either of them and possible be the difference int he run in when the real quality makes the difference in most top teams.

As fo the finances - if are supposedly unable to afford much - tell me, how come Moutinho was virtually as good as done just months ago?

Well sig was around £8m and Dempsey was around £6m for starters.

Added to the fact that we needed an AM or two to make up for the position that we sold VDV from.

Willian would have cost around £25-£30m and be on wages likely above those of Adebayors. Chelsea weren't even able to get the transfer done.

You know exactly what would have happened if we hadn't bought sig and dempsey and A.N other, and had splash the money out on one big name signing.

We would be sat here discussing the lack of depth in the squad and the fact that Levy doesn't seem to want to spend the money to give us better squad players. It's actually highly amusing.

Because there were other player who were on their way out who were also 'as good as done' that never materialised.

But we made a loss - meaning we had nothing or very little at the time (according to Spursalot) - i.e. must have secured a loan deal (presumably) and were prepared to service it

So what is / can be different now? In fact - we are in a stronger position now, being 4th - I'm sure most thought we'd be around 6th this time around

Porto changed their minds? Player wants to finish the season there? We'd probably be willing to spend the same amount on another player IF it was someone AVB really wanted and it fit within our model.

Willian is an AM himself - in fact he can cover wide array of positions.

In any case - he was a name used in the argument.

I also believe people would be far more 'forgiving' towards (finally!) brining in a top player than arguing over inflating the squad with players who barely get a game. Plus we have a few youngsters coming in up in similar positions.

We sold Modric.

Irrespective - my point was - we can secure the right finance for the right player (seemingly) - and I believe we could miss the boat this January (again) if we go without doing so

As is is the case with Internacional and Damiao, Shaktar aren't really interested in selling unless they get a massive fee. We have a chance with Willian next season as his contract starts to run out, but we won't be the only ones interested.

Didnt AVB say after the summer transfer window shut that it was highly unlikely we would go back for Moutinho in Jan?? how could he be so definite....very strange occurrings all round

Cannot believe people would put a short term splurge ahead of the club's long term future - am glad DL is chairman!! Signing a £20m CF does not guarantee you CL football - if it did everyone would be doing so

If Ade cheers up for the remaining 15 games it'll be like having a new top class CF as he contributed little in the first 23 games. Just think we need to loan a CF for the remainder of the season rather than risk a panic buy who might not settle and could be a huge financial mistake

You have to question Levy's future plan for us if we don't sign anyone in this transfer window. Why did he even sack Redknapp if he has no intention of strengthening the squad ? I don't think he has helped AVB much in terms of signings. Vertonghen, Dembele and Dempsey was merely replacements for King, Modric and VDV. We badly need more quality signings especially a striker.

ive had a look around and actually apart from Damaio i cannot see a striker in the 20 mill plus bracket who we could attract and/or was actually worth the expense/risk

Lewandowski?.....seems he is on his way to Utd
Llorente.....gone to Juve
Cavani.....yeah right
Falcao...in yer dreams

seriously, there is a dearth of top strikers out there. The pool is getting smaller and smaller

edit....maybe Higuain, but wow we would be lucky to a) pay for him, b) get him before other top teams throw their hat in the ring

You can call me a pessimistic **** if you like but i bet if we signed a 20m striker he would get injured straight away not unlike when we signed defoe he got injured and we had to go and sign keane again. I agree long term future is most important.

This whole champions league thing has become to important for some people and they are taking their eyes of the long term. As long as we are generally improving which i think we are then i am happy, if the first team squad gets better each year then it is okay by me. If bale goes this summer and we use the money wisely to buy 2 or maybe 3 good players then the squad will be better and i will be happy.

Also think the whole must get champions league thing is often put out there by top clubs to make clubs like us and everton splurge and get ourselves into problems. Leeds were threatning man u and arsenal a few years ago and they brought into the whole champs league thing and now man u and arsenal do not need to worry about arsenal.

You can call me a conspiracy theorist as well as a pessimistic **** but i think the is something in that. I would rather we build the stadium so we can afford higher wages and slowly over time build a better squad.

I think if the last few years have taught us anything it is that we can only spend what we make and that we do not have the money to go and buy a striker.

just a guess but after the club looked at the overall figures maybe going into debt to make that big signing could affect us FFP wise?

I do think we got the money but Levy just don't want to spend it. Also our salary cap will always prevent us signing top players. It is really surprising how we even managed to sign Vertonghen, Dembele and even Dempsey.

Levy is the man who got Modric to sign an extended 6 year contract on 40k a week......anything is possible;)

Maybe Redknapp was sacked because Levy wanted a coach that could get more from the players and work on improving their game, become more of a team and less a collection of talented individuals?

There's no major flaw in Levy's plans for the club, even if it doesn't match the (unrealistic) expectations of some of the fans. There's a limit to what is realistically achievable.

The alternatives are to either get a sugar daddy owner (which most of us seem to be opposed to) or gamble with our long term financial safety. Be glad our owner actually reinvest the money we bring in, unlike some other clubs.
