Whatever happened to enforcing dissent? Why don't refs book these tossers, who constantly argue with decisions. Just show 'em a yellow card, then if they keep going, give them a red. That will end it.

The refs have themselves to blame.

Players can commit tackles in the first twenty minutes of a game that they couldn't later on in the match as the refs don't want to appear authoritarian, players can indulge in all-in wrestling in the penalty area when a corner is being taken, players can commit blatant obstruction in the guise of shielding he ball out of play, players can verbally abuse the referee to his face if they like and if you're Ashley Cole you can refuse to go to the referee when he summons you and you can instead summon the ref and grant him an audience (as Cole did at WHL a few seasons back). This is all done with the referees tacit approval.

If this type of behaviour went on at a school we'd say the school was failing and the headmaster too weak. The refs are too weak and if they were to toughen up they'd be undermined by the FA who are more interested in levying massive fines than imposing real sanctions.

Significant bans such as those imposed on Cantona and Di Canio are too few and far apart.

Trying not to derail the conversation but Stoke are only allowed to be a bunch of football killing thugs because referees allow them to be.

Agree with all the main points. However, I don't think its because the referees are weak. As you say, they know they will be undermined by the FA or other football bodies if they take a tough stance.

I forget which world cup, but they had decided to clamp down on some sort of tackle/behaviour, the opening round of games saw a rash of cards and FIFA relented. Its up to the football authorities to take the stand and back the referees when they follow instructions.


P.S. I particularly hate the obstruction as the ball goes out of play.

Or it works in their favour. No referee wants to be the next Clattenburg. Another reason why Chelsea deserve severe punishment if their claims cannot be proved. Its the same reason why Fergie's criticisms in the press are effective.

No one works referees quite like SAF. A heady concoction of intimidation, innuendo and subtle flattery. The way to go.

If Clattenburg genuinely said that, then Chelsea should be totally ashamed of themselves. However, you need a moral compass to feel shame and Chelsea get their compasses from the same shop as Captain Jack Sparrow!?
 
Considering it was Ramirez who can not speak English, who told Mikel via Luiz translation, this seem's very plausable.

words almost fail me if Chelsea have really taken steps against Clattenburg over this.

not only considering their own, recent chequered history in this area, but not one of Di Matteo, his staff, or the presumably educated Buck or Tenembaum thought to apply a little common sense and perspective to this. it is absolutely astonishing, the way they conduct themselves.

I really hope that's true, Chelsea would be in serious sh*t if that's the case, should be docked points for bringing the game in to disrepute and if I was Clattenberg I'd be considering suing for defamation of character.

Racist players 'should be sacked' according to new plan


Footballers who racially abuse other players should receive a ban of up to nine months and be sacked for gross misconduct, according to the body pushing for a black players' union.
They are among the measures in a 10-point action plan that the Society of Black Lawyers (SBL) wants football authorities to adopt to tackle racism.

It also wants matches abandoned if there is racial abuse from spectators.
And it suggests fines should fund grassroots anti-racism initiatives.

It also says it will report any anti-Semitic chants at Tottenham games to the Metropolitan Police unless the club and FA show they are acting.

Peter Herbert, who chairs the group, said: "In discussions with members of the Jewish community, we were made aware that this practice is still continuing and it has to come to an end.

"If neither Tottenham FC nor the FA are willing to take a stand then SBL will report the matter to the Metropolitan Police Service for investigation and, if necessary, prosecution. The report will be made if this behaviour does not cease by 20 November. We will have monitors in attendance to observe what occurs."

You can't not laugh at it if it is what I guess we all suspect it is.

They really should refer the matter on to the Society of non-Spurs Supporting Jewish Lawyers.
