The Media and Tottenham

Funny I thought about this today when reading the BBC site, talking about how Villa's strikers need time to gel, natural they would struggle - then was thinking hang on a minute, we have changed 90% of our team, our key creators not quite back yet, but the headlines for us was no shots on target, despite the fact I think we ended with at least the same if not more total shots the forest and that's away from home.

Even commentators; when Marmoush nearly scored the commentator said he nearly ended his long wait for a goal… he’d played one and a third matches for us lol

Not related to us, but so many of the media were criticising Gordon to Barcelona, saying they wasted £80m and Rashford is better. Now Gordon is tearing it up and Barca love him, whilst Rashford is dog brick (or “exciting” as the media call him), they haven’t mentioned this at all. Why do they love Rashford so much? It’s crazy

I stopped listening to commentators and "experts/pundits" a few seasons ago, their lack of balanced comments on games/teams/players was getting so bad, not just our games but in general.
It can be frustrating at times as there are so many players who I can't identify in the game, it's probably my age, as a kid I'd have a quick look at the match programme and know who was playing, that was in the time before the Chinese menu of squads and the goal was scored by number 8 with a pass from 27 and 2 portions of 43.

A lot of truth to this but then you see a very gentle BBC headline saying “Emery knows Villa’s strikers need time” and you wonder if Spurs attackers are being given the same media coverage ….

But overall you are right, the spurs echo chamber promotes paranoia that is baked into every club’s ,s fanbase.

I think that BBC headline came from a quote, so just repeating whats been said. I have seen Emery and Villa slaughtered in other press, especially after their start.

Just switched on to Sky Sports and caught Kavin Nolan pontificating about how it was 'very strange' that De Zerbi had cited medical advice for substituting Savio and Udogie on Saturday. That he shouldn't be calling out his medical team in public and that Robertson and Kudus wouldn't be happy at the inference that they were only brought on because of the medical advice on Savio and Udogie. Went on to remind us all that De Zerbi has had fall outs within his previous clubs and that he doesn't last anywhere for longer than 18 months. I turned off.

I get that Sky has to produce content where none really exists and I'm not saying that they single out Spurs when looking for a 'story' but I'm willing to bet that this examination of De Zerbi and tacitly raising the question about when he will be gone will only increase especially if results don't make a dramatic turnaround. I don't usually watch any football content other than the actual games and this reminded me how I got to the point. It's a shame because I think there is an opportunity to make interesting content about tactics etc. but they don't see interested in doing that, they would rather just turn it all into a great big soap opera.

Because if Nolan had applauded RDZ for being one of the few managers that has a great working relationship with his medical team that isn't news. If Nolan had said that of the 10 players that share the 95 mins between them only 3 or 4 of them were totally injury free and match fit, that's not great news either.

This is double edged for these pundits. As fans on forums, we are at ground zero with our clubs. We get to see every single detail about our clubs and if we were in that studio we would sound way more intelligent than them, but only about our club. Guys like Nolan are trying to glean as much knowledge about 20 PL clubs to sound informed. They clearly don't spend that time equally and spend a disproportionate time focusing on the top 3 or 4 biggest clubs. That's why you see the bias to the big clubs.

You wouldn't hear a pundit say that Udogie has had 4 muscular and 2 knee injuries in the last couple of seasons and is being managed back to full fitness and form carefully. The would just say that he's been a bad boy by picking up a yellow and gave his manager no choice. It's OK though. Spurs have an ex Red LB with a lot of favour from Sky. They wouldn't dare admit Spurs became weaker down the left when that switch was made.

It was noticeable that in the Brentford game, Jamie Carragher thought that Robertson was our best player.

I agree with your general point, but I'd also suggest there are some (at least a handful of) insightful pundits out there who would have offered better analysis - And that Kevin Nolan is very much a simpleton ex Hammer...

He was known for his high football IQ and he was a regular captain. That is different from the type of IQ you need to be a great analysts or pundit.

I bet guys like Gazza and Kane wished they had as high an IQ as their football IQ. They'd be winning Mastermind :tearsofjoy:

I did wonder why they put “but won’t end VAR row” on the end. Not needed… as in this instance the video shows the VAR was 100% fudging correct lol
VAR is needed by tv companies. They have time to fill and need controversy to talk about. It was our turn this week, will be someone else’s next week. I switch off as soon as a game is finished nowadays, can’t imagine a world where I care for any of the pundit’s opinions.

I don't think we are the victims of any kind of media view more so than anyone else.

I'm not sure if I can simultaneously agree with this and the Ange quote but that's where I'm at.

You'll find every possible opinion out there, whether you want to feel hard done by or want to hear from like minded folk.

I'm definitely pro bbc but one phil mcmulty article stood out as a tad harsh, it may as well have been headlined as "Spurs are proper brick aren't they?".

I guess the key is we can't control how people perceive our club. It's in such an odd spot where some people perceive us as great pretenders, maybe a touch arrogant, others enjoy the approach we've taken and way we usually try to play football. Not worth crying over clickbait but Ange is right that things get a bit out of proportion, and we've got a lot of rivals...

We are a big, London club with a very large fanbase. We have one of the best stadiums in the World, some of the best facilities, we have for years been among the top few in teams in terms of spend. We made the CL final and were runners-up in the league. We've hired very well respected managers. We've managed our money well. We had a new manager come in and remain unbeaten for 10 games or so. We then had a horrendous injury crisis and a slow fall from grace. We won in Europe. We even managed to have a fairly constant campaign of hatred against our owners and Chairman. We are box-office. These days the stories can be positive or negative, they may not sell as many newspapers but it is all about ad revenue in a world of clickbait, ragebait etc. The stories are already written. If we get 3 points, we'll be back amongst it. 'Spurs continue to improve under RDZ'. If we draw 'Spurs fail to capitalise at home'. If we lose it is a deepening crisis. 'RDZ under pressure'. All as dull as duck.

Yes, I do subscribe to the fact that we naturally notice our media attention more than we do other clubs and our rivals get their fair share of negativity in the media aswell. But do think Anges' comments were spot on too.

And I think mainly due to the fact we definitely are a niche club. Because of the consistency we have demonstrated for the most part over past twenty odd years, we are one of the illustrious 'big 6' however whilst other members of this club even during periods of poor performance have collected trophies, we for the most part no matter how good or bad we are have not - and that is where we have been open to most criticism and negativity in the media sells so we are an easy target.

The problem is that the clubs that we are more parallel with size wise are Aston Villa/Everton/Saudi Sportswashing Machine and they are not held to the same standard as us because they have only on occasion threatened the top 4 and as such the mention around their lack of trophies in modern history was never anywhere intense. We basically were victims of our own 'success' in terms of being the one club who has consistently competed with the traditional elite clubs and therefore measured against their their standard rather than our more genuine peers.

So a club our size being able and to compete with the real big boys as Ange says 'does funny things to people' upsetting fans of both the big boys and the likes of Villa/Saudi Sportswashing Machine etc who have looked at us with envy (yes I know we have had a poor couple of years, but see again the reaction to us being able to spend big money this summer). Combine this with the fact we have many London teams who hate us more than any other, arguably one or two outside of London aswell and it's very easy to create a media storm around our clubs name and that's what generates the clicks these days.....

I also switch off. It’s a shame, as even up to the mid 00’s I would enjoy both before/after and half time punditry. Now, I don’t even watch half time. Either just drivvle or bs agenda stuff.

This thread should really be "Spurs does crazy things to people"

I almost agree with "top clubs make good stories" so that's just part of it .. almost, but it's really more. The clear handball "debate" going on two days later when nothing is being said of Arsenal potentially getting away with at least one, if not two red cards is a perfect example.

Villa being mugged off in the transfer market and still being in every pundit's top 5 (with only 1 having Spurs) shows the bias, list could go on and on.

Agree with @thfcsteff and some others, our fans lapping this brick up is why it keeps going.

Not saying I want them back but after Keys and Gray left sky the quality dipped. They went all in on Neville and Carragher and their bias leaves a lot of people uninterested
