The Media and Tottenham

Funny I thought about this today when reading the BBC site, talking about how Villa's strikers need time to gel, natural they would struggle - then was thinking hang on a minute, we have changed 90% of our team, our key creators not quite back yet, but the headlines for us was no shots on target, despite the fact I think we ended with at least the same if not more total shots the forest and that's away from home.
 
Even commentators; when Marmoush nearly scored the commentator said he nearly ended his long wait for a goal… he’d played one and a third matches for us lol

Not related to us, but so many of the media were criticising Gordon to Barcelona, saying they wasted £80m and Rashford is better. Now Gordon is tearing it up and Barca love him, whilst Rashford is dog brick (or “exciting” as the media call him), they haven’t mentioned this at all. Why do they love Rashford so much? It’s crazy

I stopped listening to commentators and "experts/pundits" a few seasons ago, their lack of balanced comments on games/teams/players was getting so bad, not just our games but in general.
It can be frustrating at times as there are so many players who I can't identify in the game, it's probably my age, as a kid I'd have a quick look at the match programme and know who was playing, that was in the time before the Chinese menu of squads and the goal was scored by number 8 with a pass from 27 and 2 portions of 43.

I think that BBC headline came from a quote, so just repeating whats been said. I have seen Emery and Villa slaughtered in other press, especially after their start.
 
Just switched on to Sky Sports and caught Kavin Nolan pontificating about how it was 'very strange' that De Zerbi had cited medical advice for substituting Savio and Udogie on Saturday. That he shouldn't be calling out his medical team in public and that Robertson and Kudus wouldn't be happy at the inference that they were only brought on because of the medical advice on Savio and Udogie. Went on to remind us all that De Zerbi has had fall outs within his previous clubs and that he doesn't last anywhere for longer than 18 months. I turned off.

I get that Sky has to produce content where none really exists and I'm not saying that they single out Spurs when looking for a 'story' but I'm willing to bet that this examination of De Zerbi and tacitly raising the question about when he will be gone will only increase especially if results don't make a dramatic turnaround. I don't usually watch any football content other than the actual games and this reminded me how I got to the point. It's a shame because I think there is an opportunity to make interesting content about tactics etc. but they don't see interested in doing that, they would rather just turn it all into a great big soap opera.

Because if Nolan had applauded RDZ for being one of the few managers that has a great working relationship with his medical team that isn't news. If Nolan had said that of the 10 players that share the 95 mins between them only 3 or 4 of them were totally injury free and match fit, that's not great news either.

This is double edged for these pundits. As fans on forums, we are at ground zero with our clubs. We get to see every single detail about our clubs and if we were in that studio we would sound way more intelligent than them, but only about our club. Guys like Nolan are trying to glean as much knowledge about 20 PL clubs to sound informed. They clearly don't spend that time equally and spend a disproportionate time focusing on the top 3 or 4 biggest clubs. That's why you see the bias to the big clubs.

You wouldn't hear a pundit say that Udogie has had 4 muscular and 2 knee injuries in the last couple of seasons and is being managed back to full fitness and form carefully. The would just say that he's been a bad boy by picking up a yellow and gave his manager no choice. It's OK though. Spurs have an ex Red LB with a lot of favour from Sky. They wouldn't dare admit Spurs became weaker down the left when that switch was made.

It was noticeable that in the Brentford game, Jamie Carragher thought that Robertson was our best player.

I agree with your general point, but I'd also suggest there are some (at least a handful of) insightful pundits out there who would have offered better analysis - And that Kevin Nolan is very much a simpleton ex Hammer...

He was known for his high football IQ and he was a regular captain. That is different from the type of IQ you need to be a great analysts or pundit.

I bet guys like Gazza and Kane wished they had as high an IQ as their football IQ. They'd be winning Mastermind :tearsofjoy:
