João Palhinha

I can only think if we are not signing him, the plan is to -
*buy a midfielder closer to what we all want i.e. one who can also pass progressively
*accelerate and develop Gray even further

I am wholly, wholly appreciative of Palhinha, and would not be unhappy to see him return as I really like him, however if we are signing a diff profile of player and DeZerbi is on point then all good. Also, if he himself wants to be back in Portugal, all good. BTW, if he goes to Sporting, he is going to a CL club.

Who says were weren't in for him? According to the 'Cartilage Free Captain' website (and not being fluent in Portuguese I'll have to rely on them) the article linked above says "Spurs attempted to trigger his purchase option after the conclusion of his loan to Tottenham, but that Palhinha has reportedly chosen to return to Sporting in order to be closer to his family".
we really aren't an attractive club to players anymore.

Not true mate.
Don't the 'no Europe' thing bring you down that path too far. If we're prepared to pay the big wages, DeZerbi will be a big enough draw as there will be a belief that he will us back in Europe next season. Add us being in London and the stadium, and whilst I don't think Vinny Jr will cash in his RM shirt for ours, I do think we will be able to get some fine players.

Well that's demonstrably untrue ... we've just signed Robertson, Senesi and if accounts are to be believed Van Hecke only wants to join us. I'm sure that all of those players would have had other options. As for Palhinha, it seems pretty clear that the driving factor in his decision is to be closer to his ex-wife who presumably has his children living with her. I've seen it suggested that he could have waited another couple of years but kids don't stop growing up just because you want a career and once they have you can never recapture what you've missed. When it comes to career vs family there should be no choice.

How does

Paulinha has been thru a divorce.
His (now) ex wife was pregnant with their second child during the break up.
She is Portuguese, so assuming she lives there and Paulinha wants to play an active part in his two children's upbringing (one just a baby)...then bar her moving to London (no chance, given they are divorced and her life/career is in Portugal) ...then Paulinha will understandably be attracted to a move back to Lisbon and Sporting.
