Next seasons squad

It is hard to know what DeZerbi wants, e.g. against Villa when we had the ball, we had Palhinha sinking into RCB because he isn't so comfortable in tight areas on the turn, with the full backs pushing up into midfield areas.
We had 3 pressers in midfield with no flair/ playmaker/ AM/ passer i.e. we had Gallagher, Bentancur, Palhinha in there to press, fight, harry the oppo.
Maybe this is RDZ's dream, maybe he hates it and would rather play a #10 like Maddison/Xavi/Odobert.
Who knows at this point.
I quite like the idea though, play a hard bastard midfield 3, then allow the 3 fancy Dans to do what they want up front.

De Zerbi likes highly technical players who can play through a press. Palhinha and Gallagher really don't suit him at all - they are way too limited. I think he's just using them because of their big game experience. If he stays to shape his own team next season, I think things will look very different

Right now the starting midfielders would be a rotation between Palinhia, Bentancur, Gallagher & Maddison if all were fit. Depending on opponent, home/away etc you decide who to play. These are players you would class as 10th-6th place level. Nobody 5th or above is going out of their way to sign them to be a starter.

In Gray & Bergvall you have young players with the potential to be that top 5th-1st place level. In Kulusevski & Xavi you have injured players that could also come back to that. Devine is really there to fill there spot until back to fitness. If he proves to be better that’s great, but worst case we can sell for decent money now and some first team football at Spurs will raise his value.

What we need to add is a player that’s in the mold of Bentancur but of a similar level and higher upside. Because if Bentancur goes down it’s clear the team will struggle under DeZerbi.

Wharton or Anderson will cost you £80M+.
Garner or Scott will be £50M+.
I am sure there are players in Europe we can go for as well.

But what I don’t want is a situation where DeZerbi does not have the flexibility to implement the game plan he wants in any game because I the profile of midfielder he needs is injured. Which is the position we’re in right now.
Fair points. Do you not think Gray could replace Bentancur? If not, what role do you see for him?

RDZ said he was a no.10 himself and is really sensitive to Madders/Simons/Kulu injuries and is keen to work with them...

i think we are not going to have an active summer because it will feel like we have 8 coming back from injuries who will feel like brand new transfers.

i suspect half of them to turn good and we'll have trouble offloading the other half

maybe next season is the year for young ones and the loanees to shine

it will be, yet, another transition year

The media have asked Gray a few times this season what is his best position, he always replies that he sees his long term position as a 8 rather than a 6.

I don't think he has the mobility for an 8. Not compared to say Bergvall or Sarr. But he's got the defensive nous and passing range to be a great deep lying playmaker.

at minimum -> Davies & Bissouma (out of contract), RKM (loan return), Vic (seems Italy bound) - 4 changes
also likely -> one of Richi/Solanke, one of Romero/VDV, one of the midfielders (I'd guess Sarr)
I'd also suspect a Xavi/Maddison replacement (with one unknown and other out for most of next season) is required

so 8 players without going crazy

How can 8 and a 6 plays will completley depend on the manager, their tactics, formation and the strengths and weaknesses of the players around them.

Few of the players out on loan will go as well. Some of the young ones along with Solomon and Veliz.

Question is how many of those injured players coming back can we count on.

Maddison won’t be back to his best until half way through the season. Kulusevski the same. Kudus seems to have one of these injuries that will drag on. Odobert won’t be back until 2027 and then won’t be fully back to his best until the following season. Xavi won’t be back until March time and again not fully fit until the following season.

Think you have to look at it from a position perspective

- Maddison, Xavi, Deki, Kudus are all either #10 or RW
- Odobert is LW

RW is most desperate with RKM off, we will have zero options
LW, Tel/Richi can play there and Moore as 3rd rotation of early season cover needed
#10, Gallagher can play there, with Maddison's age/time out and Xavi so far, I'd expect someone coming in.
