Tbh mate I don't think it matters what formation or system you play, fundamentally our players are lacking. Meaning that at the key moment they will do the wrong thing.

Funny how we see the game differently Deano. I thought they were both poor. Dragusin was poor with the ball. His poor header gave away one of their goals, while I can forgive that mistake, then strolling back was, for me, totally unacceptable. His positioning was poor for the Gyokores first goal and for his second again didn't bust a gut to help Gray out. Biss, felt anonymous tbh. I agree with the rest of your post though (sadly).

Yet some are deluded to think we have a top 6 squad....
We would do if we didn’t have most of our best starting lineup out injured or suspended. As they were, we are left short in key areas. It does highlight the squad has weaknesses but so do other teams fighting for top 6.

Would have to watch the goals back, they were a bit of a blur. Thought Dragusin defended pretty aggressively for the most part and won a lot of 50:50s. He did irritate me leaving Gyokores (I think) come inside early on and he just shot beyond the post. He did the same second half which was poor. Maybe Biss was anonymous but he worked hard I thought.
Dunno if it's been said but thought the crowd were good. Very loud and didn't hear much abuse or dissent even when it got ugly. There was one clown in front of me though photographing the Woolwich set pieces and celebrations. He was either a Gooner or a clam...which are kinda the same things.
Spence has shut down top class wingers before including Saka. There's no proof that VdV is going to do better defensively there than Spence. Just being fast doesn't make him a good wing back.

We had one fit first choice defender.
We were relying on a 3rd choice CB.
We were relying on a CM who has spent most of the season frozen out.
Without Romero or Porro on the pitch we have no-one who can pass well.
Let's just get that out of the way.
In the first-half, Gabriel runs across to knock Muani over with not one eye on the ball and gets away with it. In the second-half, for what would've been a 2-2 goal, Banks calls in the fix and buys Gabriel's pathetic flop (not dissimilar to Oliver and Casemiro at Old Trafford - look at the refcam).
We do not help ourselves, and today was a day we really needed things to break our way (deflections in the box for example) or refs to do their jobs.
This mess was exacerbated at Xmas/Jan by a few awful, awful decisions. Not getting Frank short-term bodies in to ensure survival and a run in the CL. Not sacking Frank before the window and thus maybe keeping Paratici onside for the Jan window and his incoming buddy Igor. Now we have a 'specialist' with one hand tied behind his back in the ring due to the fitness issues which plague us. It's pathetic, and if Lange is here beyond July, I for one will be f-u-cking furious.
Tudor will have learnt tons today. With a better ref, we might've squeezed something out of this against a side who are, and were, clearly better than us.

The worry for me today stuff was that I couldn't really see what we were trying to be. It looked chaotic.
I watched Xavi and Muani first half and they were within spitting distance of each other and neither knew who should have been pressing. There was a similar situation in our left back area I think. We didn't even seem to fully understand who should have been doing what. It wasn't good even allowing for what are very exceptional circumstances.
That said, I'm not reading much into today. The next few fixtures will tell us a lot more. Sadly, Woolwich were just far too good for us today.
I find that a stretch. We lack a decent CM that can pass the ball. As for our attacking options they are just not good enough. Deki would not be able to do it on his own.
The money spent on Richi , Solanke and Tel is criminal for the quality of players they are.
Mid to top half of table yes maybe but top 6 not for me.
I have banged this drum for a while. We have been poor in player purchases.

We were truly awful from start to finish. From high in the North I had no idea what we were trying to do. There isn’t a top class PL player available for us at the minute, but for me so many of our problems start from the keeper; zero presence, awful distribution, ponderous, panicky…so so poor.

the first, 3 guys close enough to stick a head in and win a FK off of Eze's high boot, the second, again, three people should have been on his touch, the third, clear the fudging ball the first time you have the opportunity, the last one, don't be so fudging weak and let yourself be pushed off the ball

Our first XI - Vic/Porro/Romero/VDV/Udogie/Bentacur/Palihinha/Maddison/Kulu/Kudus/Solanke (missing 8 of 11)
Our second XI - Kinsky/Spence/Danso/Dragusin/Davies/Bergvall/Gray/Simons/Odobert/Tel/Richarlison (Missing 5 of the 11)
Third: Muani/Bissouma/Souza/Sarr/Random kids
Ok could argue maybe Muani or Sarr could get in second XI but you get the point, there is no way in hell we go to top of the league with a new manager fielding 2nd and 3rd XI players and expect to win. This game was never our fight, the next few games maybe with one eye on getting some of these players back starting with Solanke/Richy (who were subs) hopefully Porro as well. More of our first XI we get back the better off we will be but I would take some of these players 2nd XI right now so at least we can rest when tired and/or have some options off the bench

You may be right, I'd need to watch the goals back. But you can always pinpoint a mistake for why you conceded.
Fact is, we were a very distant second best today and were deservedly hockeyed. Had they not scored the four goals they did, they'd have found other ways through.

If and when the Arse win the PL and we see Gabriel embracing Arteta with a medal around each neck and big sh1t eating grins on their faces, we cannot say that we tried to stop them; we didn't put up a fight, we didn't challenge them, we didn't injure them, we just folded like wet cardboard as usual.
They won't remember the cheating, the fouls, the dives. Sickening today, absolutely clueless. We just sat off them, no bite, no press, just let them do whatever they wanted and score easy goal after easy goal.

I'm not sure about that. I agree that at times in the first half, it seemed a repeat of the Saudi Sportswashing Machine game, in the way that we were overrun and had so little possession, but you could argue that we didn't get the rub of the green with the disallowed goal and the one that nearly crossed the line. At half time, I did NOT see that final score coming. Good atmosphere though....

Did someone mention the ridiculous producing, by the way? The second half had more footage of Arse celebrating goals than the actual game itself. Seems for every goal they showed so much more than normal of the celebrations before cutting to the replays.
Then they replayed the celebrations whenever Arse players timewasted or faked injuries, which I guess explains the ludicrous time spent showing goal celebrations

We were battered from minute 1. We sat in and waited for our battering. They had 82% possession and we were at home.
They had 24 touches in our box, whereas we had 1 (our goal).
At half time I said it would be 3-1 or 4-1 and I was right because I am great.
