Leon Goretzka

He has more goals and assists than any of our CM’s over a 10 season period. As i said before, he will instantly walk into our team and be far our best midfielder.

He's a good player, experienced, will absolutely bring something, but

- Not the profile we need/are crying out for
- Even moving on Biss and Bentancur would leave you with him, Gallagher and likely Palhinha (can't see us not taking up the option)
- He won't be able to play every game, so rotation option (like Danso, not a bad thing)

It doesn't matter if we sign anyone or not, some people will be unhappy.

If we signed someone of Goretzka's profile (age/experience/ability level) that was just a bit more aligned to the gaps in squad, people absolutely would be happy.

If we sign no one despite the team being in a rut, tons of injuries and us just cashed 43M for making top 4 in CL, people have all the right to be angry

Do you think we should buy someone even if no one we want is available?

No - we should only be buying players of good quality who will improve us. Most of our players are back around March time, which would mean if we were to purchase players purely just to get numbers in they wouldn't be needed in a month or two time and we can't afford to just waste money like this.

Also why I don't understand why people keep bleating on about how this window will show the owners true ambition. Right now we are 14th, we aren't an attractive option to players of real quality. We tried with Semenyo, and are willing to break our wage structure but as with most players at that level they will have their pick of better teams. And there aren't many big players available in January.

It is in the summer when we are more likely going to be able to show our muscle if that really is the boards intent, getting players in that would really improve us in a January was always unlikely with the predicament we are currently in....

That's what I can't get my head round in modern football, there are so many suits doing jobs a club manager use to do.
If the "Technical Director" is responsible for identifying signings and developing players he must also play a part in selecting a style or tactic of play along with recruiting a manager who fits that template.
That was the huge red flag when they asked Paratici what his preferred style/system was, in a Spurs interview, and he said "Thomas Frank is the manager now so my style/system is whatever he wants, I just match players to what the manager wants and needs"

Er, that is the wrong way round Fabio!

Of course they will, winning on games like football manager[ and the like] makes them all experts.

I agree that some of the complaining goes over the top — mostly on social media, rather than here. But do you think there’s nothing to be upset about as a Spurs fan at the moment?

Is it though? The one thing a DF cannot do is get the coach to change his style or system. That is absolutely a non-starter.

The style issue comes when the manager is chosen - once that happens, any player purchased must align with the manager's wants and needs....

The problem then is how long are you going to keep your manager, sacking them frequently leaves club with a mishmash of players.

But there is an alternative view that says the DoF develops a strategy to match a club's DNA from the first team to all the teams below.
Then you pick coaches to suit the system. That way you do not pick a coach that plays attacking football and then replace him with a coach that plays defensive football and then says I do not want these players.
If a DoF does his job properly a new coach/manager should not be appointed and then want to change half of the team.

The problem is you have to appoint the right DoF in the first place.

But good players are good players regardless, the idea we want some lesser LW player (as a random example) because its Frank and not someone else is abit over played as an idea. Yes he didnt want BJ., but let's be frank here, he needs upgrading on longer term.

Xavi is a player for all styles, a CB would be for all styles as would a CF.

Maybe the volume of players change and the one role that does is the CM profile, but beyond that, its the same
