Xavi Simons

I thought Xavi was superb vs Brentford; he got the better of their midfield and with 1 yard of space he could pop off a pass and receive it and cause chaos and create the goals.

I thought Xavi got hammered by Forest, every time he tried something he was either stopped or scuffed it and just lost the ball way too much. Probably down to the brilliance of Forest's press.

Probably true of most games we've played; when CHE / ARS / NFO pressed us we couldn't deal with it. When we managed to get a foothold and start playing vs BRE etc we looked a lot better.

Anyway, here is a fairly boring and very long interview with the immensely articulate Wayne Rooney and his 2 co-presenters who try to twist his mumblings into actual content

They always had an extra man in the press (forest) whereas Brentford didn’t press at all

Frankly one of the most macaronic moments I've seen from one of ours in a very long time. Losing the ball constantly, okay, I get it, he's being overmatched in the Premier League, it happens, give him a year to adapt. I get it.

But reacting by getting sent off at 30 minutes for a macaronic lunge at your opponent straight in front of the ref, is not acceptable or excusable. He will get fined for letting his team down, he deserves to, and after his 3-game ban, he should not find his way back into the side for a while. Sit him, on the bench or in the stands. We'll make do - setting an example is more important here, imo. Might suit him having time to think a bit, and not be such an idiot in future.

Bit dramatic. He lunged out -- perhaps there was some intent, perhaps not. Hard to say. Definitely a red card, move on.

Come on that's a bit of an overreaction he made a mistake. he will cop a 3 game suspension which is enough. We've all seen worse tackles go unpunished.

The ref -despite his penchant for giving Liverpool most things- saw it on field as a yellow; straight in front of him. Attwell, miles away in an office building, slowed it down enough to make sure the ref could be summoned to the monitor. It was a VAR-red. Not a human ref one.

Not going to make excuses for it, it was a red and a silly one. But I think that sort of thing stems from an over eagerness to do well when you know the team and fans haven't yet seen the best of you - not just the tackle but some things he tries in general.

He will be real quality for us (and has shown in snippets), this is just part of the norm for being a Spurs player - let's be honest, I don't think his tackle even makes the top 100 stupid tackles seen from players wearing this badge :D....

You think that was the one of the most macaronic moments?? It was nothing compared to what Romero, our captain and supposed leader, did to get sent off. He made a mistake, got a harsh red with numerous similar incidents that only got yellows. He's owned the mistake and apologiesed, move on.

I don't think he's ready to be starting PL games, I think Frank had it right having him in the bench.

He's having to start as we have zero creative options to play instead.

However I am shocked he's looked as weak as he has so far, the German league is pretty physical as well.

So Xavi has apologised and owned up to it. Guess we can close the book on whether it was a red card or not as there was still some debate. Hopefully he learns from it and he’s determined to kick start his career when he comes back.

He played in a team that relative to the league were better than we are. It's a little bit easier to perform when your colleagues are also that little bit better than the opposition. Not even taking into account any of physical and tactical differences between the leagues.

This is true, literally what happened - but the whole point of anything VAR is to pull up something that the referee has seen and got wrong.

He had to slow it down to demonstrate the clear studs up going down his leg. It was a red card all day long and on this occasion VAR actually worked - I can only imagine the frothing at the mouth had the same challenge been on one of our players were it to be left as a yellow....

Is it
Or is it to highlight what the referee hasn’t seen
Correcting him is reffing the game
They said that’s not what it’s here for
It’s a red card in slow motion. And imo a red card. The issue for me is what the hell did the ref book him for then?

He also played in a team with a defined structure of play that also was clear in his role too
