Without any doubt whatsoever !

He's slow, we all know that, not much he can do about that though, he makes the best of what he's got. He, simply put, was a mainstay in a team that got top 4 and also took to CL football perfectly fine.
I don't think he's particulary slow, at least not physically. But he's quite a slow thinker, hence the sometimes rash interferences and hoofs. Dawson is also pretty poor at leading the defensive line, but put him alongside a player who's good at it (King), and Dawson is a defender as good as anyone IMHO. I wouldn't sell.

I've gone for Dembele. My reasons are as much to do with finances as footballing reasons. Unless we can get Moutinho for under £20m hen Dembele is a much more viable option IMO. I know that Porto have a cracking record when it comes to producing players who they then sell to superior leagues and whom are then successful but there re exceptions to every rule - Anderson being a notable one. Dembele is proven in this league and t the reported £15m asking price would see us have £17m of the Modric money still available for the other areas which we are looking at.

This should only be bumped if there's transfer news not a Michael Dawson debate.

Bassong was also good the year we qualified for CL what the hell has that got to do with now? We have better options than Dawson atm simple as that and he hasn't been in good form since that season

mute it... or put on some mozart in the background

It wasn't the music itself, that was fine. It was the intermittent train crashes that occasionally put me off of the video!

Bit late in the day to start imposing that rule, this thread has been off topic for most of the summer !

Postiga being another.

At least we've moved on from the goalkeeper debate - by Friday we should be talking strikers again! ;)

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

For me it's more that we didn't have anyone better than him at the time, but we do now. I could see his flaws back when it wasn't alowed to say anything negative about him.

Dawson is very good beside a ball playing, intelligent partner. With anything else his Carragher-esque body on the line 100% challenging can become a liability. He has been a great servant to the club but he is only starting material in the right partnership and not the first of the CB pair you'd put on the sheet IMO.

I think he's a player that reacts on instinct. Coming from the lower leagues that is more likely to be physical, sometimes rash, challenges and clearing the ball as far up the field as possible. Can perhaps be a bit too nice or maybe naive at times, doesn't do the dirty stuff that the likes of Terry (just of the top of my head, there are many others) get away with. The little nudges and shirt pulls that make it more difficult for the attacker. Think it's too late to start making massive changes to his game now.

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

Dawson would be a good option against certain types of teams (direct, hoof specialists), he's a monster in the air. Even in this pre-season against NY (MLS teams tend to play quite direct), they put long/diagonal ball after ball in and Dawson won everything in the air.

I get what AVB is trying to do, but if we got the transfers that people are dreaming about, it is a significant amount of change in a short space of time, and will probably hurt out chances this season.

Re Cabaye, I can see Ashley selling, I'm actually surprised he has taken this long to consider cashing out on some of the cheap buys they got in recently.

Transfer strategy does go hand in hand with current personnel and tactics though IMO

Re. Dembele.

This is Pablo Mills. Man-of-the-match when Crawley played United at Old trafford 18 months ago, now without a club. Worth a punt? 8-[

I can't watch it without being distracted by the atrocious mixing! Bring back the days when it wasn't so accessible so that every Tom, dingdong and Paul van Harry couldn't just get a computer to auto sync for them...

thump-thump-thump-THU-thump-THU-thump-THU-thump-ump-thump-ump
can't even get the sync working properly

thats it. im now a dembele lover after that 6 minute youtube clip

Re: 1060 pages and a striker, but 113 pages later no more Modric summer transfer thre

one thing that concerns me about Dembele is that he is simply the flavor of the day, looked like a world beater last season and so far this season, but before that I knew nothing of him. Main thing is that Huddlestone was the exact same player 3 years ago, people were talking about United coming in for him etc. Since then he has not progressed and only gotten worse and been very injury prone. I want Dembele, but maybe 15m is a bit insane

Thing that Dembele lacks though is vision (not something that youtube could ever show). He's got the technique, but not the guile. It's why he'll only ever be half a Modric or a Moutinho.
