The squad is easily strong enough as it is to win the first Five games. With Defoe, Bale, VDV and Sigardsson there is loads of goal potential.
I'll settle for a point away against Saudi Sportswashing Machine, opening games are always a potential banana skin, but I certainly don't expect Saudi Sportswashing Machine to beat us.
All really depends on AVB lining up the team in the right way. As long as we are able to create enough space to play we'll be fine.

Wow what an optimist! I certainly hope your right mister but my money's on Saudi Sportswashing Machine as we are right now.

I think e will beat Saudi Sportswashing Machine but I am also hoping that it wont mask the serious deficiencies in our squad.

The whole spine of our team is up in the air.

Friedel? first choice or a new GK?

Defence? Who is the lynchpin Vert or Kaboom? is kaboom even fit - i havent heard about him yet this pre season

Midfield? Modric or no Modric fudgein sort it out

Striker? NO fudging STRIKERS
 
If we get a point against Saudi Sportswashing Machine I will be delighted.

If Sandro is fit and available and AVB realises he doesn't have the personnel to play 4-3-3 yet then we still can start the season strongly. I don't believe Defoe can play as a lone striker in a 4-3-3 but we can make do with him in the same 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 formation we played most of last year with VDV joining him up top.

We also have to accept the fact that our patient short passing possession game was mainly down to the Modric/Parker partnership and neither of them are likely to be available. So even with the same formation as last year we'll need to play a different style. Possibly more direct along the flanks. I actually wouldn't start Sigurdsson yet either, because from what I have seen so far he doesn't look like a player who can play in a 4 man midfield. I can't believe I am saying this, but I'd probably start with the midfield of Bale, Jenas, Sandro, Lennon and tell Jenas just to work box to box to support. Especially when VDV drops deep from his higher starting position.
 
A draw would be a great result at Saudi Sportswashing Machine. In fact any result this season that "betters" last years results would be a bonus. Last year our results against the big boys were:

Emirates Marketing Project - lost home and away
man ure - lost home and away
arse - won home lost away
chelsea - drew home and away

5 points out of a potential 24.

If we can improve against the lesser clubs, then hopefully we will pick up more points from these key games. Cant be much worse - or can it?

Its seems likely we would still have signed Vertonghen and Sigurdsson, we'd still be struggling to sign a striker, we'd still have a problem with Modric wanting out, we'd still have a problem Sandro being on international duty and Parker being injured, and we'd still be facing a tougher battle for top four next season with Chelsea (and maybe Arsenal) strengthening.

For me the isse then would be who would you prefer as manager. For me if we weren't going to actually make steps in the transfer window I'd have kept Harry. AVB (a joke manager for almost every PL fan last year) was a massive risk, but one which most believed we would at least try to mitigate by backing him in the window. GHod help us if we get off to a bad start under AVB.

Fair enough. We'll see where we are at the end of the transfer window. I have to assume that we are working on deals, that Ade and/or another established quaility striker will be signed and Modric will be retained or replaced with a quality player. Less than that and we would be going backwards.

My point was simply that we would have had the same problems with 'Arry as manager. But I see your point, if we are not going to make a significant move, why go through the upheaval of a managerial change. I'd agree if the reason for the manager change was simply that Levy didn't want to spend the money with 'Arry. However, I think the main reason for the sacking was contractual, with 'Arry demanding a longer contract than Levy was willing to give him.
 
We have agreed a fee for Vurnon Anita, wonder if he will be thrown in at the deep end with Tiote being a doubt.

We hoped for a good start to the season, we hoped that some of the tinkle poor performances in the last third of last season would be a thing of the past.
Then this OMT shatters the hopes and dreams of millions of Spurs fans world wide.
