Rodrigo Bentancur

I actually think the refs are trying to do everything right include the play ons
It’s hard for them with the pace of the game
It’s also super rare for a ref to pull it back and book the player

But what is becoming a recurring trend is the sharing of “kicking us”.

Chelsea did it
Villa did it
Others will do it
Vs Chelsea Maddison had 6 fouls in him in the first 15 minutes and no yellows as it was 4 different players
I really hope the club is pointing this out to the officials.

It’s not healthy but I’m still annoyed with “Matty” Cash. Two players of ours he’s done now. I’d happily let Romero scythe him down the next time we play and take a lengthy suspension if it injures him for a while. Fully grown fudging man still calling himself Matty

Point out what though
It’s not against the rules
The issue is for us to deal with it on the pitch
Doesn't he just mean getting in the officials ear and pointing out that we're getting some rough treatment?
We've always been poor at that. Under Conte we started doing that kind of thing a lot more and you could see Kane for example looking very uncomfortable with it.
I've got a feeling that Ange is a little too fair minded, which I respect but every team needs some degree of gamesmanship just for protection.

I agree.
I love our, and Ange's, current attitude BUT at this level it's fine margins you grab an inch and small advantages where you can.

Otherwise It's the old proverbial 'nice guys never win'

Clubs and managers get to put in reports and have an audience with PGMOL between games so it might just be more a case of showing class in public and then doing what's needed when they have the chance in private.

I'm not even sure the so called bigger clubs get it all their way TBH, seen so many crap decisions spread about this season

This is my point exactly.

If the beings in power truly were out to protect the players, and to enhance the free-flowing, attacking football, they can do something about this. But they have to give the referees the power to do so.

When NHL had a worsening problem with slashing and tripping in the early 2000's, they tweaked the rules, and increased the penalty for this, and lowered the threshold for when to incur the penalty. Football can do this as well, and has done so before, with the "tackle from behind"-change from a while back, and now recently with the "don't talk back to the ref"-change.

It leads to a brief, turbulent period with a lot of cards and some very hypocritical pundits slating the refs, but eventually the game adapts, and you get the change you wanted.

Unfortunately, there are some out there who thinks that kicking the other team off the park is a very valid way to win...
I suggested it in another thread when Maddison was kicked around, that a solution could perhaps be a straight yellow for whoever makes the fourth/fifth foul on the same player in a single game. Or something along those lines.

Make it about the player who is getting fouled, not about who fouls him. I think it could work.

No news on how long he'll be out? Was supposedly limping around after the match. Such a blow if we're to miss him as well for some time now.

Hopefully just a knock although did he twist his ankle as he landed as I don't think the contact was actually on the ankle.

If he twisted it Kane style then it could be strained ligaments and out for a few weeks.

Do we know what happened with Maddison’s ligaments? Was that another Kane type twist and strained ligaments 🤷🏻‍♂️

Book the captain, same for time wasting and cynical fouling.

I'm not sure a cynical team wouldn't take one yellow for five dirty fouls. Pretty much how it is at the moment.

Yes it might be we are doing that BUT the message doesn't appear to be getting through?

Yeah, probably - my suggestion would probably need a bit more tweeking to work, TBF. A good first step could probably be for this to be broadly recognised as a problem. I'm sure many other teams experience this as well.

There was some talk on tw@ter that it was "just" a bruised ankle and he needs a few days rest, but no real source, probably optimistic guess work.

Interesting, was the contact on the ankle then? I thought it was on the shin and then feared he might have hurt his ankle when landing.

I would rest him anyway against City. In fact I would pick the team for the wham game (which is just a few days later) which would be needed again against Saudi Sportswashing Machine two days after that, and then not play any of them against City.

Write that game off because even if we nick a point it will cripple us for the next two winnable home games that come in quick succession. Also someone like Udogie will get injured in one of those three games knowing our luck atm.

Vicario
Porro, Romero, Dorrington, Udogie
Bentancur, Bissouma, Lo Celso
Kulusevski, Son, Johnson

Save all of them apart from the gk for wham and Saudi Sportswashing Machine.
