Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Its what happens when opportunity is disconnected from ability, especially with the private school system and how that then permeates across the levers of power. Thickos completely out of their depth thanks to daddy's money.

Britain doesn't like, encourage or support intellectualism. It never has. In fact it probably actively works against it in politics and the public sphere.

It wants conformists, lacking inspiration or spark. It wants people who will maintain the status quo without challenge. That is what Private Schools became about in the 18th to 20th century (some were founded for a decent reason of supporting charitable education but most have morphed into producing groupspeak identitacos).

It seems like the nation has gone backwards since 2016 doesn’t it? A series of incompetent governments. Highest taxes in a generation and extreme waiting lists. We’re paying more for less. UK has huge debts and we’re not really facing up to being poorer past Brexit. Covid and Johnson spaffing the cash didn’t help but there seems to be more at play here. I suppose one amusement is people voted for Brexit to control immigration - and we’ve got some of the highest rates of immigration we’ve ever had. While the Euro rebate cash for the NHS is nowhere to be seen.

Who should we blame?

I would say from the early 70s, when Keynesianism got abandoned for greed and excessive consumption.

Conservatives that don't know how to conservative.

In a global economy it's far better to take taxes of 5 or 10% of something than 20% of nothing. Most decently sized businesses can shift their profits almost anywhere. We need to have a tax regime that encourages it to be here.

They are the worst of both worlds at the moment. High spending high taxation 'Conservatives' without any of the social measures to reinvest in society.

Appx 5m pensioners are millionaires. Yet the Challancor today increased the pension pay accross the board. Costing 30b a year. Which is a staggering amount. The state pension is going up, fine for pensioners on the poverty line. But for millionaire pensioners, really? This is where most of goverments spending is going. For context, the NI cuts for business only cost 9b a year. A measure which is designed to create more work and growth. In the past Conservatives were about stimulating business and lowering spending. And they were competent at this kinda stuff. No more it seems. Brexit has delivered us the most incompetent bunch of no hoper politicians. All of the talent was hounded out, and to be frank our governments have been scraping the talent barrel ever since.

This government is extending the nations debt, despite what the challancor said. Debt will soon be at 100% of GDP, and not start to reduce for another 5 years by which time it will be someone elses problem. If you are going to borrow and spend, at least have something to show for it!

They are deliberately sabotaging the economy now, knowing that they will be out within the next year.

They are conserving their own wealth just fine, which is the end goal of all Tory policies. There is nothing broken here from their perspective. The plan to funnel the nation's wealth upwards into a tiny cohort is working spectacularly well and if you are feeling the squeeze, like most of the UK electorate, it is just that you are just not in a lofty enough position in the hierarchy to be on this special gravy train. You mistakenly drank the low-tax cool-aid.

Exactly. They won’t have to deliver the promised pension rises - so promise away. It does two things: gives their core vote a reason to back them and two lays a trap for Labour. Who can’t really allow the triple lock to continue but also can’t come out and ostracise pensioners.

The NI stuff is flimflam. Claims it as a giveaway but is actually only giving back a quarter of the increased personal taxation in his time.

I agree morally with the pension argument, but I don't know how much means testing every pensioner would cost - could be as much as it saves.

Also celebrates a reduction in inflation then spaffs everyone's money up the wall with a wage increase 🤬

450 a year saving for your biz for each of your employees no? That is a decent chunk.

Im not sure there's ever been a society where pensioners are so disproportionately wealthy. I think thats quite widely appreciated too (the boomers last harrah), so it wont be that contentious.

Labour wont have the triple lock in their manifesto, and im pretty sure they'll dismantle it in their first few weeks.

If that were the case then they'd have done something about inheritance tax. Whilst it's avoidable, trusts and other such schemes are still expensive - and those are little good with unexpected death.

Any of the Brexit voters feel as though we have ‘taken back control’? With 1m immigrating a year into the UK. Net 750,000 extra people coming in. At least 3 times more than pre-brexit. Anyone feel as though they were mis-sold?

For 13 years the Tories have been selling the masses reductions in immigration 😂 Idk what is worse the conservatives performance or the gullibility of the electorate.

Who is to blame?

Control is different using that control well.

The big issue here is that universities are crippled by the no inflation fee freeze, so are basically importing Young Nigeria to try and make ends meet. That's just a bad policy decision meaning educating UK students is a loss making enterprise.

I predict one day you'll admit that Brexit was a tragic mistake, and not just that they didn't do it right. Your hero Keynes was famous for changing his mind when presented with the evidence and famously once said, "When the facts change, I change my mind.".

I’ve said it before on here - there is a reason that state education is always massively underfunded under Tory governments, and that school staff are constantly denigrated under their administrations.

“Keep the mushrooms in the dark and throw s h i t at them,” as James Cleverly would no doubt say.

I don't think anyone bar the colonial administrator class ever ultimately mourns the outcomes of decolonialisation. Freedom doesn't really have trade-offs
