* Official Pre-Season Games Thread *

Defoe has gotta go , he's a player on the downward slope , cut loose of this continued recurring toothache . USA holiday is over , no more autographs . AVB honeymoon over , bring these egos down 5 pegs and make em watch themselves on screen , the salaries they are on he should be tearing their arses out ... No more mr nice guy

BOOOO!!

And I say that as someone who only had it on in the background while doing other stuff.

The up side of this is it will hopefully emphasize just how pronounced our weaknesses are. Sure we have key players missing, but we also have weaknesses which have existed for a few seasons and which were not addressed. Regardless of what some think of Harry the risk is too many are underestimating what he did, particulalry considering the transfer restraints seemingly imposed on him by Levy. Equally worrying is that the loss of King and seemingly inevitable loss of Modric are not seen as they should be: as the loss of two players of fundamental importance with Modric a genuine world-class talent. I support AVB, I like the idea of drilling systems into the team, but also fear his stubborness and the disaster that what his Chelsea reign. Sure the circumstances are different, but already we have exposed continuing weaknesses through the middle which his system will magnify if the players cannot get the high-line to work. Last season we saw what happened when key players got injured and sadly this window only makes me worry more about this issue. I expected Levy would have a strategy in place considering he sacked the man who got us 4/5/4th in the PL, and who got us playing great football. I assumed that mean getting players in place to play the system AVB wants, and investing money in trying to fight those around us. It has not happened...yet. But even if we do have a late splurge the areas we will be addressing have been problematic for a long time, and thus it is not surprising some/many fans might wish to ask just what on earth is going on as our nearest competitors add major talent.
Good post

I don't think AVB was ever gonna get a honeymoon with us lot do you???

Have we seen you here before mate, under a different name perhaps?

No, under the same name a couple of years ago. Couldn't log in when site got changed. Presumably i'm showing some similarities to an old member but i couldn't be bothered with making that sort of effort tbh!

Aarrhh the double bluff. Only joking I know nothing...literally...they only let me out on Thursday's :)

So people that have watched 90 mins you know they are over-reacting because you have watched 25 mins ? :ross:

Fair point, won't argue that it's a bit rich Wriggly...but I WILL stand by what I thought of the last 25 mins and say it wasn't quite as wrist-slittingly terrible/doom-laden/relegation certainties as some comments might have suggested. There's a lot of frustration on here IMHO, and I think sometimes, that frustration accounts for some over-doing?

Fair enough, sorry, didn't wish to be rude...no, not necessarily a similar style, just a similar opinion to a few...although to be fair, I'd say there are more similar opinions developing by the minute :)...:-(...

Well considering we play at home 1st September to Norwich whilst the ParaOlympics being on the same policing will still be in action.

The ParaOlympics is just as a sellout as the able bodied games has been.

Even West Ham kick off at 12:45 live game on tv home to Fulham on that day... London derby!!

Orient are playing two away games though on the 1st and 8th.

The Paralympics has less venues, less events and less spectators. Policing the Olympic Games has been a massive undertaking, all Met Police leave has been cancelled to cover it, is it any surprise that they do not have the resources to cover friendlies too?

So, we definitely need two strikers, then. And a replacement for Modric. A Sandro back, obviously. Jenas has to go.

I know why but this has been one of the most uninspiring pre seasons in 20 years that I can remember! Money's on Saudi Sportswashing Machine at this rate.

Look, there will be losses in this coming season. That much is clear, and must be put down to the squad still getting to grips with being made to practise tactics after four years of five-a-sides and shooting drills. But AVB can only be expected to deliver when his squad is fully ready for the challenges. And at this moment in time, it isn't. Not by a long, long way.

Priority 5 - Get some of our injured boys back on the field as quickly as possible.

Priority 4 - Shift whatever dead-wood still remains in the squad (I'm looking at you, Jenas)

Priority 3 - Sort out a new long-term goalkeeper.

Priority 2 - Sort out the Modric situation; if he's going, let him go now, if he's not, re-integrate him into the squad and let him start dictating our games again.

Priority 1 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forward_(association_football)

Can only hope that Hudd not appearing was because he had some slight injury, illness or a sunburned toe or something. If AVB really put on every outfield sub apart from him and he was fit and ready on the bench while our midfield was getting outplayed like that I will have to go breathe into a bag or something.

Well I mean the initial period of joining the club and ingratiating yourself, introductions and a civil way of getting to know your squad . With a nice little jaunt stateside read expenses paid holiday . That honeymoon . It's now over and time to get a bit fergie / bill nick

At least two strikers. The Modric replacement is vital, and no excuses for skimping for a replacement. Sandro will be key this season, but I am actually most concerned about the impact of the defensive system. Sure it starts from the front line (which means more dynamic powerful players than we currently have) but will also depend upon how quickly Vert settles in and if Kaboul can stay fit (and of course if AVB is willing to adapt).
