Guglielmo Vicario

We have been blessed with substituting a goalkeeper with fantastic reflexes for a goalkeeper with exceptional reflexes.

I’m usually a ‘give them time’ type of guy but my first instinct upon singing him without having seen him play - based entirely on his career history - was that he would likely not be up to standard.

Now I’m of the opinion that he is not fit for even the bottom end of Premier League.

He’s not a kid. He’s not 19. He’s 26.

I so hope he’s an understudy and not our first choice. But considering we spent £17.2m on him I can’t see him being a second. Which is quite frightening.

Maybe he’ll surprise us all. But imagine if his performances carry on what kind of an atmosphere it’s gonna be for him come October.

To be honest he seems like a calamity. The abuse will be relentless and he’ll have to go and face a crowd who have him in their sights. Every miss kick, every mishap - they’ll be waiting for it. If he can’t hack a couple preseason games how’s he gonna deal with handling an entire south stand breathing down his neck?
This aged well...

I said in a few months time once he's being hounded by 60,000 for every mistake I'd remind you of what I said...

Well I have to admit I jumped the gun. Still early days but he's looked class for us more than once.

Would rather admit I was wrong than shirk off acting like I didn't doubt someone who (fingers crossed) might be a good goalie for us.

My apologies etc...
And a key is never judge a player on YouTube
There are many that look great on there but are really brick

I didn’t fancy the lad based on pre season and Brentford but, fudge me, he’s proving me all sorts of wrong. Great shot stopper and a very safe looking pair of hands. And he fudging loves it as the clip above shows.

Will forever love Hugo for everything he’s done here but Vicario was absolutely the right move by the club. And 17m…

He done a quick long throw in the second half to set Deki down the wing, even the commentator mentioned how good his distribution was, i think that would have been in the stands if it was Hugo.

So far there has just been a solidity to his work. He hasn't had to make any mind blowing saves but he's been saving everything you expect a keeper to save and the ones you're hopeful they do.

With Lloris even at his best you never knew if he was going to let in a softish goal. Vicario never seems to let in anything that you could expect a keeper to save. His positioning is very sound, making what could be difficult saves look very easy. He's also great with both feet. It's just such a refreshing place to be.

A biggy for me… he takes every cross he could and should
He takes them at height too which means they can’t be won by others
That’s a player with confidence
His aves have been very well made
And every time he receives the ball form a pass he is already on the half time to find a another player

I'm pleasantly surprised by how two footed he is as well. I can't quite work out which foot he is better with. It's so calming to have a keeper be able to hit his teammates with either foot. He also doesn't try to be overly ambitious with his passes, he goes for accuracy and seems very aware of any pressure on the receiving player. Fantastic addition.
