*** OMT Spurs vs West London Defence League

Our set piece specialist coach seems to have had an adverse effect on our defending set pieces. Whoever thought leaving their dominating centre half unmarked and the whole of the back part of the penalty area vacant needs their head examining.

Watch the tifo vid. Chelsea usually play an inswinging cross, they changed it to outswinging. Caught us out.

We also scored from a corner.

Agreed, but to be fair, there was an interesting analysis video of the game I watched (Tifo, I think) where the guy pointed out that of the past hundred corners Chelsea have taken, only a couple were outswingers - the vast, vast majority were inswingers, and we had set up to mainly defend the near post expecting an inswinger.

Chelsea then pulled a fast one and played an outswinger to Koulibaly, who by loitering on the edge of the nox, confused both Royal and Son, who were both zonally marking. It was a smart play by them that caught us out, not necessarily bad preparation on our part.

Still, think we should make common sense adjustments when that sort of situation arises - agree with you on that.

Edit: @Lilbaz refers to the same video above.

I'm not quite sure if and how we've changed our defending from corners. If we have made changes it's fairly natural that there's a period of some mistakes as players get used to how we're now doing things.

Thought Royal should have reacted quicker.

I suggested we started Richarlison over Son. Son's display was one of the reasons we were sompoor in the first half. Neither him nor Kane were first to the ball and neither could hold the ball up - thereby inviting unrelenting pressure. Son would have been much better utilised when the spaces opened up later in the game.

Sess was also poor today and completely in Loftus Cheeks pocket. Conte wascright to take him off but should have started Peresic in such a game.

Mistakes by Conte today almost cost us. We got a lucky in the end.

Sometimes the gamble with Son is that he gets away that one time. As he did in the second half. Against top level defenders that are well organised he can often go missing for periods of the game.

Him and Sessegnon did very little going forward. It didn't look great at all. It's a big ask from Sessegnon when Son isn't on his game and he's constantly getting the ball under pressure with few good options.

Thought Sessegnon defended well, good to see. What you suggest with Son is kind of what happened with Sessegnon. Let Sessegnon battle it out, defend well, let Perisic do his thing when a bit of space opens up. Unfortunately we went behind and from that point it's always a very difficult game.

Chelsea did a really good job shutting down our patterns. Playing through pressure, building from the back and counter attacking. Tuchel is genuinely world class at that imo and they have a very good team. When that happens we struggle we don't have the individual quality to find other solutions.

Hopefully as the season progresses some of the new lads, and perhaps some improvement from some players will change that. Conte will have to think long and hard about his approach next time we play them.

Name a RWB and LCB that was available, was an obvious upgrade, Conte wanted, and yet we didn't go for?

Agreed.

Perisic and Spence were obviously identified as the best possible options that we could sign.

Perisic arrived injured and probably wasn't quite ready to start yet, or at least not seen as the best choice. Spence is young and will probably need a bit of time. Them not being immediate, second game of the season, solutions doesn't mean they were the wrong choices.

That was the first time Tuchel hasn’t beaten spurs
It was also another game where Tuchel had contes cards by tactically setting up his team for a one off
They okayed a kinda 2-6-2
James and Cucarella played wide and also central
Kante owned the midfield
Then they had mount and Loftus Chrek doubling up on our left… no one did on our right though
It meant mayfield was stifled so no out all there
And Kane dropped deeper to help but just didn’t get the ball to stick

Formations aside (as that has been discussed already by many), the way they moved off the ball to receive a pass was really impressive. Several occasions they passed round us in tight positions around their own box to play out.

I think this game highlights why many have been calling for a more technical player in central areas - which would give us an option to play 3 in there if needed too

all in all, delighted with a point but on another day we don’t get so lucky with those decisions and walk away with another loss at Stamford bridge

Very good point, loved the needle.

Greatest injustice ever! Why is it always Spurs that seem to inflict these grand injustices against every club in England? We've never had anything go against us of course, deffo not a phantom goal that didn't cross the line followed by an 90th minute offside winner that could have cost us CL football many moons ago in that very same stadium? never.

Despite myself, I really appreciated James' quality in the game yesterday. He was brutally efficient and prevented Son from playing - Jenas highlighted it in his MotD2 analysis.
He seemed quite riled in his post-match press, that'd be surely the result of Romero celebrating at him.

Don't think our press was as good as theirs. If they could have played against themselves I think they would have struggled as much as we did more or less. They had several dangerous losses of possession that we didn't take advantage of.

Kane and Son are wonderful players, but they're not great at pressing.

That entire Chelsea team was set up to press and shut us down. Also to attack of course.

Cause we don't give up. Lot of people criticised how we didn't defend the corner for their first goal, but we had basically 4 players attacking the ball for our equalizer. Hair pulling aside, chelsea should have done better.

James is quality. That cross for Havertz just after we scored was insanely good.

On the offside...odd one. If Richarlison isn't there, the Chelsea defender is still in the way of Mendy, and he gets a touch on the ball. So I don't think you can say Richarlison was making that much of a difference. But it's easy to say with Spurs-tinted glasses on.

On MOTD2 Jenas showed clearly that Mendy had a clear view of PEH when the ball was struck - Richarlison was not impacting his view at that moment. The ball swerved after the hit.

I know fudge all about tactics, so can't comment on that aspect. What I did see, however, is a team that couldn't exchange two passes in midfield to save their lives vs a team that was pinging it around with ease and always first to the ball. Before the game my hope was that we would dominate them. Even if we had lost, that would have me feeling we're a team that has improved from the level of the final third of last season and has a lot of potential to actually push City and Pool this year. Instead they dominated us and made us look like a relegation team. I don't know if it's player quality, mentality, or just one of those days. I'm hoping it's the latter. Regardless, I can't wait for the return fixture and do hope we draw them in a cup for an additional opportunity to get back at them.
