The case for the defence

He bought Arthur from Barcelona for £64m while selling them Pjanic for a similar amount…. Ignore the transfer fee, it simply allowed two clubs to swap high wage players they didn’t want for large fees so that both clubs could meet FFP regulations, as incoming profits are booked in one go while transfer fees paid for players are amortized over the length of the contract.

That was actually a very clever piece of work from both club’s DoFs

Apart from the fact that juve are listed on the italian stock exchange. So it is illegal. As it's manipulating capital gains and profit levels. Inflating the share price. Now juve and paratici are under criminal investigation.

Royal is the only one remotely in position. Quite what Reggie and Davies are doing is beyond me. Dier has over-committed and Romero is badly out of position, especially given the position Dier moved into. What a mess!!!!!

If Romero had been in position I think we would have been pretty much fine.

Reggie and Davies have been out defending wide, no? And gotten bypassed. That happens. Dier gets dragged across, that's normal. But somehow Romero is further to the left than Dier.

Bit of a mess, but in extra time when the protection ahead of the defenders isn't in place these things happen.

I guess it's part of the downside with Romero. Aggressively pushing towards the ball to win it, when he doesn't he's then out of position. Most of the time that's fine, but in a situation like this where the rest of the team isn't in the right shape it's a problem.

It is an issue with Romero and will be for some time. I tabbed him as responsible for the reasons you've outlined, but he is in a learning curve. Reggie and Davies? I will have to watch the sequence again, but if two men are marking our wide and said-player has made his way inside past them, then they have both blown it.

I’m not as sold as Romero as some seem to be, he seems to lose his man a fair bit and seems rash - why did he run the length of the pitch to get involved in Tuesday? Ended up getting booked.

It might be because we are 1 Good CB sort, if we manage to get a ball winning CB some of the issues we are facing May vanish.

Romero wasn't at fault for being out wide. The initial ball caught Reggie further upfield and Davies would've been isolated 3 on 1 so Dier and Romero moved across to provide cover.
As the play built up Romero and Davies switched off and let their two players run in behind. If they go with the two runners then they are unlikely to score.

I bet all four of our defenders in that circle thought the two Boro players are offside when that ball is played, as they were 2-4 yds the wrong side of us.
Royal plays them on, when simply there is no need to. The Boro players were running laterally as well, not even thru the lines. He MUST see this

Whilst I agree.. royal is facing his man ish
The others are clustered together like there in a dance off
That’s poor play

There are 3, then 4 (the player who makes the pass) Boro players on the right. That probably requires 4 Spurs players to be in that area as well?

We all know when you play football to be in a crowded defending situation, you're either directly challenging or trying to intercept or close down the next man. What often happens (and our defence does this a lot) is we ball watch. The point is, you're in the trenches and pre-occupied.

Royal is not pre-occuppied he is outside the situation literally looking in. He is not even being forced backwards by the man he is marking. The Boro players are in an offside position for ages (in football terms) if he keeps a line with Rom or Dier.

Pretty much impossible for anyone to prove that Arthur and Pjanic weren't worth those amounts. Unless the DoFs at Juve and Barca were silly enough to have electronic/written records of this cosy little arrangement (and I doubt they are silly enough to have done so) then they'll be fine.

I believe there may have been wire taps involved. The police have used them against clubs before in italy.

Good Netflix doc on it
Even with the wire taps the police couldn’t confirm anything. How… I don’t know but the clubs had to basically punish themselves

The links with Gvardiol, Botman and De Vrij bode pretty well for next season then.

What about jones from boro as rwb? The boro fans think he's better than spence. His stats seem to back it up this season. Anyone seen more of him than the game against us?

He was excellent vs us and has been linked with us
He is a running machine too which is so key to contes system

I hope not, because especially today, you have to keep playing. No VAR in the tie too.

The ball-watching thing is a giant issue.

Good point, but I think it is always better for one of the two moving across to cover the space and let the other go to the man. Both going to the man results in…well…a chance. At least one covering the space slows the progress and forces the man on the ball to make a decision as opposed to making it for him? That’s always my read in those moments; I think it was a case of mental fatigue too, switching off…

Playing offside (or trying to) in a situation like this is fine imo. There's pressure on the ball, on that side they play the opponents clearly offside. Dropping deeper to be in control of runners would cause other issues.

They do keep playing, Romero at least is trying to get back, while playing the Boro players clearly offside.

The ball-watching thing is a giant issue.

Not sure it's a giant issue. Extra time, tired legs, somewhat chaotic situation with Boro moving the ball well. It happens to most players. We're usually pretty good in these situations.

I think the goals given up against Soton (last two) and Wolves involved a higher degree of ball-watching than I’m comfortable with. I agree on the tired legs at Boro but we simply lost focus.
