Squad Assessment - Spring 2022

Gutter Boy

Tim Sherwood
This is what we've ended up with then:

-----------------------------------Lloris(Gollini)

-------------Romero(Sanchez)-Dier(Rodon)-Davies(Tanganga)

Royal(Doherty)-Bentancur(Hojbjerg)-Skipp(Winks)-Reguilon(Sessegnon)

------------Moura(Kulusevski)-------------------Son(Bergwijn)

-------------------------------------Kane()

A 21 man squad.

Reflections:
- Lacking a decent RWB
- Short at CF
- Only one left sided CB
- 3/4 WFs prefer the right side

Also
- Gil and Sarr - on loan, likely to return
- Ndombele, Lo Celso and Carter-Vickers - on loan, not likely to return
- White, Devine and Scarlett likely to pad out the bench

Its more progress than I had dared expect. The glaring hole is obviously the lack of another CF

I think GLC will find a buyer in Spain - he'll suit the game there and impress I believe. Ndombele, I fear, might be back with us this summer

We've cleared some of the noise though, so no excuses for not having a decent summer window whilst Gil and Sarr offer long-term potential

In the short-term, importantly none of our top 4 rivals have strengthened in Jan

If anything they are weaker now than they were a month ago for various reasons

I still think the clamour for a RWB is not that much of a problem. Royal is still in his first season at PL level and Doherty showed when you play him in his natural position then can can do a job.

I feel what we are needing in Summer is a LCB, a Quality midfielder and a striker.

No wildcards, jokers or circus acts for what seems like the first time since before gazza arrived.

One in three chance of top four. If we succeed it will be a great recruiting sergeant and speed up the work Conte needs to do to strengthen.

Big key now is he has every player brought into him and his systems
The bad-apples for whatever reason have gone
Yeah we need an additional LCB. That’s a challenge if things go wrong there
I’m less concurred about RWB because when Doherty has played there (9 games) we have done very well as a team (even though he many not have been outstanding - I couldn’t remember a league defeat with him play RWB)
Add in the new additions who do know how to work hard and it’s fresh faces to change a culture and refresh the squad
IMO it’s a solid to good window

For the summer I'd like to see Torres, Lamptey, Brereton and then someone a bit more creative in CM (I'm not sure who, but someone in the Locatelli mould).

Definitely work to be done in the summer to take us to the next level. But think we're looking ok. Said 2 in from the beginning of the window so am happy. Pity diaz, kessie and even traore didn't come off but think we can get 4th with those. Bentancur and kulu are solid buys.

I think its a very good window given the outgoings. Its not the most creative squad but a lot of distractions have been removed and I think we're in a better position to finish top 4 now than we were on Jan 1st

Especially with everyone dlse standing still and greenwood being a c.

Very good window for me. The wages saved over the next 6 months (and hopefully transfers to come) should set us up well for a big summer, with lots of quality free agents and other moves happening.

Hmmm. Not good in the air or in physical battles
Would prefer Botman myself or potentially the lad from Monaco that I’ve only heard people rave about Badisheille

We're looking for someone to play alongside Dier and Romero though. We need a quick, cultured player next to those two to get a balance. Botman is slow.
