20/21 Player Ratings and Thoughts

SpurMeUp

Jimmy Cantrell
Rate each player out of 10, and would you keep or get rid. Plus rate all key Spurs managers: Mourinho, Mason and Levy out of 10 and say why!

Difficult. I'd say:

Lloris 7,5 (keep)
Doherty 4 (rid)
Reguilon 6,5 (keep)
Alderweireld 6 (keep)
Hojbjerg 7 (keep)
Sanchez 4 (rid)
Son 7,5 (keep)
Winks 5,5 (not sure)
Bale 6 (keep)
Kane 9,5 (keep)
Lamela 7 (rid)
Hart 6 (rid)

Rodon 7 (keep)
Dier 5,5 (keep)
Sissoko 5,5 (rid)
Lo Celso 6 (keep)
Alli 6? (keep)
Bergwijn 6,5 (keep)
Aurier 7,5 (rid)
Moura 7 (keep)
NDombele 6 (not sure)
Davies 6,5 (keep)
Tanganga 6,5 (keep)
Vinicius 6 (rid)
Skipp and Sessegnon to return.

I don't think all the 'keeps' deserve to stay, but if we could get rid of the seven in bold I think that would be a good first step of the rebuild.

Mourinho 3 (rid)
Mason 6 (keep, but not as head coach)

Levy 6,5 (keep) - still one of the best chairmen in the game

Kane 9, a long season for Kane and Son. Kept quiet in a few key games, otherwise could not ask more of him. Even lent a hand in midfield under Mourinho - as well as banging in goals! Keep if we can.

Son 7, should have given him a rest after Xmas. Looked tired a jittery in the final months. Keep.

Moura 7, showed his worth driving through the midfield. Needs more end product still, but can't fault his energy and drive.

Lamela 6, one of the better seasons from him. Can't believe anyone would pay more than he's worth as a sub/rotation for us. Keep.

Davies 5. Used to be a solid squad player. But lacking any confidence to attack he's not of a quality we need now. Sell.

Reggie 6. I think we know now, we don't have a finished article RB. He's got great promise. He will fly forward and have wonder games. But needs to feel grounded and at home still especially in defense. Keep.

Hojbjerg 8, played every PL game, and many more. He can pass, he can certainly tackle, just missed a few chances to tuck the ball away - if he added goals, and more consistency in his passing, would there be a better midfielder? Amazing signing for around 15m and makes a mockery of our 100m midfield. Keep.

Ndombele unratable! At times an 11. Some of his passes. Some of his shimmies. The talent is there. Can he put it together consistently so its not cameo performances? Keep.

LeCelco 7. He gives his all, and is creative. He will lose the ball sometimes as he's a player that needs to take risks.

Alli 6. Similar to LeCelco he needs to risk possession to come up with the goods. He failed under Mourinho because that was too much of a risk for Mourinho. Alli's game is more suited to high press. As losses of possession can often be recovered. Sell if we are keeping LeCelco. Only room for one of them.

Bale 7. He needs to be played as a striker. He has always been slow to get going. But when he is he's one of the few who can finish like Kane. Keep for another season, with no transfer fee he's decent value.

Winks 5. Fine as a squad player. Sell.

Sissoko 5. As above.

Toby 7. He has the experience and technique. Good for one more year. Keep.

Bergjwin 6. He needs to maintain some confidence. Internally, his head goes down too easily. Keep as no will pay enough.

Sanchez 6. He is getting better. But that is not good enough. Sell.

Dier 5. The guy needs time and practice at CB - not with us. Sell.

Tanganga 6. Has the right attitude. Needs more games. Loan.

Mourinho was brought in to win things. But his modus operandi was undermined when we conceded goals. Our defensive weaknesses undermined his systems, and our ability to play. To compensate he over complicated things. 5 is maybe too generous. I could see what he was trying to do, and he did have us top in December.

Mason, 7. Credit to him for getting the team playing on the front foot, and taking the shackles off. He's intelligent, can push buttons, but is not ready to manage us. Keep him around.

Levy 5. Clearly he knew what was coming with Kane, and hiring Mourinho was a roll of the dice to see he could deliver metal. Arse was about to hire Mourinho so Levy pulled the trigger and went for him. Was it a mistake? Of course. But can't fault his desire to try things. Sacking Mourinho and installing Mason - again can't fault him for acting quickly when the rot sets in. I wouldn't have sacked either Poch or Mourinho personally. But I don't think Mourinho would have delivered any more than Mason. As for our transfers, I don't think you can isolate Levy from Poch, he spent big two years ago and we got very little value from our 100m.

Lloris 6,5 (keep)
Doherty 4,5 (rid)
Reguilon 6,5 (keep)
Alderweireld 6 (keep)
Hojbjerg 8 (keep)
Sanchez 4 (rid)
Son 9 (keep)
Winks 5 (rid)
Bale 8 (keep)
Kane 10 (keep)
Lamela 4 (rid)
Hart 5 (keep)
Rodon 6 (keep)
Dier 4,5 (rid)
Sissoko 5 (rid)

Lo Celso 6 (keep)
Alli 5 (rid)
Bergwijn 4 (rid)
Aurier 4,5 (rid)

Moura 6,5 (keep)
NDombele 6 (not sure)
Davies 4,5 (rid)
Tanganga 5 (keep)
Vinicius 5,5 (rid)
Skipp and Sessegnon (keep)
Foyth, Gazza and Vickers (rid)
Mourinho 4 (rid)
Mason 6 (rid as head coach)

Levy 8 (keep)

Lloris - 7. Kept us in games this season with his typically magnificent saves, but I think it's finally coming time for our captain - the game's moved on beyond his typically excellent saves in terms of what keepers are now expected to do (organize the defence, command the box, play like a sweeper, distribute passes, be cool when pressed).

What to do with him: If he's content to stay another season, buy his replacement now, and keep him for his last season with us, and tenth at Spurs overall (which means he'll get his testimonial).

Hart - 4. Shaky when he did play, but thankfully, he rarely did. Apparently a good voice in the dressing room, though.

What to do with him: Move him down to third place, replace him with a new keeper to back up Lloris and then replace him in 2022/two new keepers, if Lloris goes.

Aurier - 6. Decent, but he'll never cut out his errors, and is an average right-back even at his best.

What to do with him: Sell. For whatever we can get for him.

Matt Doherty - 2.5. Awful right back, awful wing-back...just awful. Goon fan as well. Why on Earth did we get this guy?

What to do with him: Flog him immediately and eat the loss.

Japhet Tanganga - 6. Frustrating season for Japh, with glimpses of his potential, but also with frequent injuries and general underutilisation.

What to do with him: Keep. He's versatile enough to serve as backup RB and backup CB as well.

Toby Alderweireld - 6.5. Rarely put a foot wrong, but unfortunately, his physical limitations have now caught up with him - too slow, weak in the air. Still a master distributor, but time's up for Toby, unfortunately.

What to do with him: Sell. Maybe back to Ajax to be their wise head, if they're interested.

Davinson Sanchez - 2.5. The biggest goddamn disappointment in defence, because he has the potential to be magnificent, but is let down by not having a brain and two left feet - every time.

What to do with him: Sell, if we can scrape 20m-30m out of some fools who don't mind a brainless defender if he's got a bit of pace.

Eric Dier - 2.5. Promising early season, even with error after error in judgement - they weren't punished, and his 'leadership' and ability to block shots stood out more than all the other flaws in his game. Toward the end, though, he became truly, breathtakingly atrocious - bad at everything, good at absolutely nothing. Slow, poorly positioned, can't pass, can't tackle, can barely head. What a shame his career's turned out this way, at only 27.

What to do with him: Sell, to whomever will have him. He isn't even HG.

Joe Rodon - N/A. Barely used this season, but while he did make errors like everyone else, in his brief minutes, he showed promise. Rarely beaten in the air, reasonably fast, decent at distribution.

What to do with him: Keep. He has a future here, I hope.

Sergio Reguilon - 4. Honestly, a brilliant opening few games, but then that Christmas party, his injury, and....just things in general, seem to have combined to turn his performances atrocious. Poor distribution, poor decision-making, feeling sorry for himself, being outmuscled, outthought...poor opening season on the whole.

What to do with him: Keep. There's talent there - it just disappeared for some reason. Hopefully it comes back.

Ben Davies - 5. Anonymous, except when he was caught out by any winger with a bit of pace and a turn in him.

What to do with him: Sell. Would be good for Palace or someone who doesn't mind a 5/10 performance at a minimum, and a 6/10 performance at the maximum.

Danny Rose - N/A. Why is he still here?

What to do with him: nothing, his contract runs out in a couple of weeks.

Lads on loan:

Paulo Gazzaniga
- 6. Apparently helped keep Elche up.

What to do with him: Sell, if Elche want him. If not, some other La Liga team might.

Juan Foyth - 7. Apparently had a quietly impressive second half of the season at Villarreal. Up and down beginning, but settled once he got a permanent berth at RB.

What to do with him: Sell, if Villarreal want to activate his 15m clause.

Cameron Carter-Vickers - 6. Apparently did a decent job for Bournemouth.

What to do with him: Sell. Clubs at Champo level will be interested, and he's HG as well.

Ryan Sessegnon - 7. Struggled initially, but grew into his role at Hoffenheim as the season wore on. Bulked up a bit, and got more comfortable at LB.

What to do with him: Keep. Bring him back and let him fight it out with Reguilon for first-choice LB next season.

Overall thoughts: Defence and GK are the worst-performing grouping by far this season. I'm already up to 9 in my sell list, highlighting the scale of the revamp and rebuild needed - total, and complete.

Dont disagree wit most of that!!

I think one of Dier, Sanchez and Toby will stay next year, but if you add 2 CBs to one of them and Rodon, then you have your CBs for next year. LB is fine. Add a RB to Tanganga.

we can raise a reasonable amount by selling Aurier, Doherty, Foyth, Sanchez, Davies so it feels do-able

Sell Winks, Dier, Sanchez, Aurier, Winks, CCV, Davies, Doherty, Sissoko and Winks.

One of Son, Dele (my preferred choice) or Kane will have to go to raise more money - unfortunately it’ll probably be Harry.

Did I mention selling Winks?

Lloris 7 keep
Hart 0 fire in to the sun

Aurier 6 looks like he's off
Doherty 5 sell
Tanganga 6 promising, keep/loan

Regulion 6 mixed bag, showing promise, keep
Davies 5 time to say goodbye
Rose n/a release

Alderweireld 8 keep
Sanchez 5 sell
Dier 4 sell
Rodon 6 keep

Hojberg 7 keep
Sissoko 5 sell
Winks 3 sell
Ndombele 6 mixed bag, keep on condition
GLC 6, keep on condition

Son 7 keep on condition of new contract
Bale 6 keep on condition of new manager
Lamela 5 sell
Moura 6 keep on condition
Bergwijn 5 sell
Dele 6 keep

Kane 9 keep
Vinicius 6 keep on condition

Not sure if I've missed anyone

Part 2 - midfield.

Lucas Moura - 6. Extremely hard worker, and I only wish his feet kept up with his legs, and with his brain. He seems to know what to do, when to urge the team on with his runs and when to sit and cover, when to press. And he really has a heart - kept going even when others around him gave up many times this season. But his feet just can't execute at the same rate - can barely pass, can barely link up play, and he makes the wrong decision in possession too much.

What to do: Keep. Useful utility man, will be useful off the bench, always a great hype man to have.

Gareth Bale - 7. Yes, he disappears against top opposition and in big games. But as far as flat-track bullies go, he got 16 goals for us this season, making him our third highest scorer. Not bad for a guy who was out for half a season just getting back up to full fitness. I can't hold anything against him - he's our Gaz, and it was good to see him back again.

What to do: Ask Madrid for another loan - he's useful to have, and if he's okay with it, why not try for another year if the new coach fancies having him around?

Erik Lamela - 6. Frustrating as hell on the ball, but he's an absolute tiger on the field - fights hard, fouls well, and is a great 'spoiler' to have - especially as he can play a bit. It's been overlooked, but this season, he's been fit more often than not - that's progress for him. Bit too late in terms of his career? Maybe. But I can't hate Erik.

What to do: Sell. Need the squad space, unfortunately.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg
- 7.5. Magnificent opening few months, low middle where he struggled badly, but picked up a bit in the final few games, with the occasional horror show. But still played every minute of the PL campaign so far - true iron-man in that respect.

What to do: Keep. He wins the ball amazingly well, he's a leader, and he's apparently indestructible. He has severe limitations on the ball, but we need a destroyer, and we should be building around him as a 'Khedira' type - high-presser who ranges up the field, wins the ball and then lays it off to someone who can do something with it.

Harry Winks - 4. Mostly just terrible - never passes forward, gets outmuscled, is out of position, hides from the ball. But, to be fair to him, he wasn't *that* terrible at the end of the season under Mason, although that isn't saying much.

What to do: Please just sell him and eat the loss. He's a Spurs lad, so no need for rancour, but I hope he moves on because he just isn't good enough.

Tanguy Ndombele - 5. Slow start, great middle, flat end. The thing with him is that he's just mentally extremely weak, and pretty timid to boot - if the game isn't going his way in the first five minutes, he shrinks, makes a ton of errors and disappears. Apparently not the best trainer either. An utter waste of money, imo.

What to do: Sell, if someone will have him. If not, just keep him and hope - there's enormous talent there, but allied to a truly terrible mentality.

Giovani Lo Celso - 5. Enormously frustrating for Gio. Injured for large parts of the season, and might be our new Lamela in more ways than one. But when he plays...he makes errors, yes. But he tries - runs hard, gets into the wars, tackles and fouls, and doesn't hide from the ball. He's the polar opposite of Tanguy in many ways.

What to do: Keep. His mentality makes him worth persevering with, and hopefully it works out and he gets over his injuries and shows us what he can do.

Moussa Sissoko - 1. Wish I could give him a zero, honestly. But he trains, I suppose, so he gets the bare minimum of 1 expected for a football player. Absolutely worthless at this point - can't pass, can't tackle, can barely run, loses his marker all the time, can't concentrate, has the footballing intelligence of a peanut.

What to do: Sell. Please. Just sell, for 10p or whatever we get for him.

Steven Bergwijn - 5. He's tactically intelligent and he works hard - he's just really unfortunate that he had to spend the majority of the season being Mourinho's water carrier, sitting in our own final third. There's a player there - he presses hard, is fast, can pass, can shoot. I hope the new coach gives him a shot.

What to do: Keep. Better times ahead for him, I hope.

Son Heung Min - 7.5. Magnificent in the first half of the season, and a worthy part of the greatest goalscoring duo in Premier League history. But, second half of the season...GHod, what a decline. *Never* took anyone on, just got the ball, cut back, passed to someone and walked off. Again, and again, and again. I have no idea why, but he just absolutely collapsed in the second half of the season.

What to do: Up to him, really. I'd keep him, but if he wants to leave, not the end of the world.

Lad on loan -

Oliver Skipp - 9. This kid was often the only bright spot in a desperately disappointing season. Week after week, he dominated the midfield for Norwich, and I ardently hope he comes back from his injury, smashes next season for us, and captains us one day.

What to do: Keep, at all costs. He'll be Hojbjerg's backup/competition next season - and GHod knows, we need someone for that. \

Overall thoughts - only four sales here, but two of those four (Sissoko and Winks) are absolute *must sells* - I do *not* want to see either here next season, and we can't get shot quickly enough. The rest were let down by the terrible tactics and approach of Mourinho.

Addendum: I forgot about Dele - shows just how his own season's gone. :p

Dele - 2. Frustratingly overlooked by that c*nt Mourinho, but it has been coming. Lad's been on the decline for a long time now. His highlight of the season is probably snogging Pep's daughter, which shows his own fall from the kid every team on Earth wanted back in 2015-2017.

What to do: Sell. His story here seems over, unfortunately.

Part 3 - Forwards.

Harry Kane - 9. Honestly, the best forward in the league, best striker, best playmaker, best player I've seen at Spurs since Bale. It will be a bitter pill to see him go because of how we've fallen off, but he doesn't deserve to end his career wondering why we never had the courage to back him and push on when it was possible to win things.

What to do: Not our choice. Keep, if we can.

Carlos Vinicius - 6.5. Honestly, not bad backup. He was just never utilised in a way that a) fit his strengths, and b) allowed us to consistently rest Kane. He works hard, is a good finisher, knows where the goal is. Not a bad player to have.

What to do: nothing. His loan will end, and I don't think he's worth the buyout - I also want as little to do with Jorge Mendes as possible after Mourinho and Doherty. But the lad himself didn't do badly.

Dane Scarlett - N/A, but kid will be the next JD, I'm sure of it. Excited to see how he grows, and hopefully the next coach will give him plenty of time.

What to do: Keep him and Devine (and Lavinier too), promote them to the first team, play them early, play them often.

Lads on loan -

Troy Parrott - 4. Disappointing, frustrating season for the lad, and he's in genuine danger of seeing his enormous potential simply drift away.

What to do: Another loan, I suppose.

Overall thoughts - this is the area in most flux this summer. Almost everything we do here depends on what happens with Kane.

Time to move on;

Hart
Lloris
Toby
Ndombele
Son

Time to let them leave if we get value for them;

Aurier
Sanchez
Sissoko
Kane

Absolutely don't let go under any circumstance;

Lamela

Get Skipp, Sessegnon and Fyoth back in and involved.

Managers -

Jose Mourinho - 0.5. Atrocious whining c*nt who made me loathe watching my own team and the cowardice with which it sat back against literally everyone. Gave us one of the worst nights in the club's history against Dinamo Zagreb, who had a coach in prison at the time of the game. What a failure, on every conceivable level.

Ryan Mason - 6.5. Did about as well as could be expected, with a significant bonus for beating Leicester and finishing above the lot down the road. Well done, Ryan lad. One of our own, as ever.

Daniel Levy - 0.25. fudge it, I'm in a good mood, he gets a quarter of a point from me for finally f*cking things up enough that the fanbase is starting to wake up to how useless, incompetent and cowardly he and his puppetmaster Joe Lewis are. Thanks for that, Dan - much appreciated.

Overall thoughts: we are in a time of enormous flux, and have about 13-15 players we need to move on this summer. Whoever the new coach is, they have to do that while Levy hangs around for 50000000 weeks to extract an extra 25p out of the deal.

Whoever it is, I wish them luck. They'll need it.

Wow @DubaiSpur .25 for a chairman who you were praising at the beginning of the season & after the summer window - nothing like consistency eh...

;)

Btw after all those words of review you appear to have missed Dele - would be interesting to get you thoughts on him...

Teaches me to think a leopard could actually change its spots, I suppose. ;)

Dele - added above mate, thanks for reminding me!

Harsh review of Dele, thought he had been a solid 6 on average over the games he was involved in any meaningful minutes - can't odds being frozen out

And re: Dele, the thing I'll add is that a year out of the squad would have taught most people to do things a bit differently. The things that c*nt Mourinho was criticizing Dele for are, tbh, things he needed to learn - pass the ball quickly, don't hang on to it, make sharp passes, take control of the midfield, be the player your potential says you can be.

He spends a year out because he can't do any of that. He comes back under Mason, and...his game is the exact same. Literally nothing changed about him between last year and this year except he got a year older. And, presumably, better at Fortnite.

Dele has it in him to be the player Ndombele also pretends to be - a midfield dynamo. But a year without learning a single thing is indicative of where his problem lies, and why his story here's done.

@billyiddo - he's been alright since Mason's come in, but it's hard to tell how much is down to him, and how much is down to the team playing with the handbrake off. But the things he's doing now aren't any different, imo - I have yet to see quick give-and-go passing from him, quick passes in tight areas setting players into space, long passes from midfield, marshalling the players around him.

He can do that. It's in his locker. No player who nutmegs blokes ten times a week forgets how to do those other things. But he doesn't, and it speaks to me of a wider concern with him - his ability to actually evolve beyond the player he was at 19.

Gotta remember he's playing himself back in to match fitness after being shelved for so long - all things considered he's looked OK - last couple of matches have been frustrating though tbf

True, but I'm doubtful that fitness has that much to do with not, for example, setting players free into space and turning into traffic to lose the ball instead - or picking it up deep and launching a pass into space for the runners. That sort of thing is instinctual - fitness isn't necessarily all that related to it, and yet he hasn't done it since he's been back.

Even his shooting hasn't evolved much - to me, it still looks like he's unable to shoot with power, for whatever reason. Things like that don't see like fitness issues to me.

I actually don't mind Doherty. He can look ponderous, but I've seen enough of him to know he's a decent RB. Was important to us against Leicester and played okay. How many players look questionable in their first season? Would give him a 6. Not many others would I know.
