And if you actually took an average of the English rankings over something like a 5 year period we look good

No. West Ham won the original bid. The main reason being that their bid retained the running track in Stratford, whereas ours did not. We stated that we had been told that this wasn't a requirement in the bidding process but were waved away.

A complaint was then made (not by THFC) about the fact that West Ham's bid was part funded by a loan from Newham Council on favourable interest terms that was not offered to all bidders. This constitutes illegal state aid and meant that the decision to award the stadium to West Ham would not stand up to legal challenge.

A second bidding process was therefore run with stricter stipulations on requirements (i.e. that the running track had to be retained in the stadium for the entire period of the lease). THFC did not enter the second bid as:

a) This made Levy's plan unviable
b) There had been a lot of (unexpected) backlash from the fans about possibly moving to Stratford (I spot a pattern with this unexpected backlash stuff!)

From reading some of the stuff online last night it did seem that some people didn't fully grasp that the ESL was a CL alternative, not a PL alternative. Of course there would still have been significant knock-on effects to the PL, that shouldn't be ignored but some posts did indicate a lack of understanding of the intent of the ESL.
I suppose it was due in part to the unplanned nature of the announcement, but the messaging around it from the participating clubs was awful.

Yup, but again I think fans as a group are partly to blame, because we never do anything about the things we don’t like. Look how quickly the backlash put the ESL to bed,

Yeah I increasingly think that the new CL rules aren't actually that much better than the ESL. Is there any way of trying to get a similar kind of backlash going about that?
 
I wonder if there are forces within the Tottenham board to remove Levy from his position now. If ever there was a chance to have him removed and move up the pyramid, now is the chance. Would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at the next board meeting.
 
One good thing that has come from this on a personal level is it's managed to reinvigorate my love for the game as I was beginning to feel a bit flat with it all as it was. Empty stadiums, dour football under Mourinho. I wasn't bothered about tonights game at all and not especially excited for the Cup Final on Sunday. But the threat of this Super League, which no doubt about it would have ruined football for the average fan has made me realise how much I love the sport, the competition. The fact that (altough rare) a Leicester or Blackburn can win the league, the fans, the passion , WHL shaking when you take the lead in a NLD.

All this would have been replaced by a shallow, awful 'competion' that has no real meaning to it. The thought that we'd see 2nd string players in the PL games to save them for a trip to play Real Madrid in LA at 1am on a Wednesday night would have shown that the club doesn't care about its loyal fans at all. The fans that have paids hundreds and thousands on season tickets pushed to the side.

I'm with you. Not watching the sports channels or sky at the moment as a result, and never watch the build up to games given they're dominated by ex Liverpool players rthar than balanced

But the ESL participation would have needed board approval so I don't see why that would be the case. Unless the board feel that such damage has been done to the brand that a fresh face would be better and Levy agrees to become the sacrificial lamb and step down from his role as Chairman- and I can't see that happening at all. And ENIC, including Levy, would still be the owners and pulling the strings anyway.

I remembered it differently but I can’t find anything to prove it and I’ve already procrastinated with work enough this morning!

My slightly tongue in cheek comment was to indicate I would remain confident in our club, let alone the Emirates Marketing Project lawyers defending any case West Ham could put together.

Blackburn spent an absolute fortune. Leicester used PED's.

Neither were fairytales.

And to get us out the way, we were offered planning permission in Tottenham, which hadn't looked forthcoming up until then.

Yeah, you're probably right. Unless they somehow need a spacegoat. I can't believe they hadn't seen this reaction coming.

The rules aren't much better at all. It just means less money to the clubs, more to UEFA and less chance of a working FFP model.

Oh, and we can't improve on the methods of officiating either.

He often takes a view that isn't in line with the prevailing public attitude but it's always well thought through and very well articulated. Maybe the fact he has his own mind explains why he doesn't seem to get a pundit gig and people like Evra, Robbie Savage and Joe Hart have.
