Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan is close to re-signing for the midlands club.

The American international parted company with Villa at the end of last season after failing to put pen to paper to a new contract.

But new Villa boss Paul Lambert is understood to be an admirer of Guzan, who is on the verge of agreeing a new deal.

Villa are hoping Guzan will sign up before the start of a three-game tour of America in 12 days time.

Guzan has been number two for the majority of his time at Villa since moving from Chivas four years ago.

He was first understudy to Brad Friedel and then Shay Given after his arrival from Emirates Marketing Project last summer.

Excellent!

...Money grabbing taco though. How could he possibly have turned down Liverpool?

if they offered 20k a week as rumoured, then why wouldnt he turn them down when they are paying Henderson 65k a week

I'm so happy Sigurdsson has signed, what a player he will be.

Gylfi is now official

Wriggly..... all these comments were totally worth it, right?

You did say the weekend, tou then moved to Monday, and your Icelandic pal moved it to midnight Monday. He signed Wed lunchtime. But I'm glad you both told us, because the reports that he was signing around a week before you both mentioned anything were totally inaccurate. So you were spot on.

What the fudge is this fudging fascination with Sigurdson - you guys just desperate to sign someone?

Its like not getting your groove on for so long that you would just go shag anyone no matter what.

Tom Huddlestone is a loan target for Southampton, if they loan him out
Report; Tottenham interested in CSKA striker Seydou Doumbia, and could make a bid in the coming weeks. Priced at £15mil
Owen Hargreaves has been training with QPR, and they will offer a pay-as-you-play contract to the midfielder
Saudi Sportswashing Machine are interested in signing PSG centre back Mamadou Sahko. Who wants to leave #PSG as he is not guaranteed first team action

I really think this lad might be very good indeed.

This was my issue when the rumour first came out about double the wages.

Liverpool pay big wages, so for me there was no way we'd be offering double what they do, he'd be our highest paid player - no chance. Then it comes out that they've offered the same wages he was on at Hoffenheim (about 20-30k) and then the double wages thing starts to ring true, we'd be offering 50-60k for him which is the going rate I'd say.

Now the point of all this is - WTF are Liverpool playing at? How could they offer such low wages for a player that looks to be their new managers No. 1 target? At 20-30k I reckon that puts him in the Jay Spearing / Jonjo Shelvy type bracket, maybe even lower ! No wonder he told them where to go. I wonder what Rodgers makes of all this, if these are the wages they're going to be paying now then they'll do well to get any targets they want.

Serves them right for paying well over the odds for players in the past, their bloated wage bill is catching up with them!

I've said this before, and it seems likely to be a big problem for Liverpool. Most of their first team are on what you might call "Champions League wages". Yes, the club still have a huge revenue thanks to their worldwide fanbase, but I suspect the bean-counters behind the scenes have made it very clear that the wage bill is unsustainable without regular CL football. And that doesn't look likely for them at the moment.

Therefore the new manager is in a tough position with regards to signing new players.

Just a theory - GHod knows what's going on behind the scenes of Liverpool (or any club!) - but it seems to fit the facts.

Here's the #meltdown - a weeks worth. Expect some deadwood to be passed off next before next announcement

Interesting, Guzan is like a Friedel clone. Was really surprised he never got anything going in England because he seemed like the next solid American keeper.

Yesterday's quotes from Rodgers about getting Suarez on a new deal makes even less sense.

Another berk to add to the list:

Told that Adebayor is not happening. Not part of AVB's plans. But stepping up efforts to sign Damiao and/or Higuain #thfc #coys #avb #spurs

Who: POTL

JJ will be leaving. If someone takes him!

Lennon: Not.going.anywhere.

There's been recent speculation that POTL might be someone connected to Lennon, like his agent.

The JJ news pleases me... How many seasons we tried to offload him now? Get rid of Bentley, JJ, Bassong and Gomez with atleast 20% of the realistic targets we've been rumoured to be after and i see that as a great window
