OOMT - Tottenham vs Emirates Marketing Project

We were still a 4th place team that season so not miles off the pace.

Trouble is we ruined the continuity by changing the person at the top - in all liklihood we'd have targetted CB improvements rather than persevering with Toby & Dier had we stuck it out.

New guy came in, thought the team was better than it was and so the rebuild got messed up

Id be interested to read any books released by players who were present during Poch’s time and are still here now (or perhaps someone that moved on like Jan or Eriksen). We absolutely battered Everton 6–2 in the Xmas period in 2018 and we ticking along nicely. We then lost to wolves at home weeks later and Then to Burnley away, both times coincidentally we had a chance to put pressure on pool and city if we had won. I’m still convinced that Burnley defeat was damaging to Poch and the team. He looked like he lost his head after the game (I think we knew we blew our chance in the title race but each to their own). Our form nosedived after those two games and has never really consistently recovered. Of course there are other factors, poor recruitment, injuries, change of manager etc.

We don't know the Trippier story yet either. He made some cryptic comments when he left, made it sound like he couldn't get away quickly enough.

I said after that wolves game it felt like the end of an era, the players looked like they had had enough.

To be fair to Poch, Trippier was brick and rightly sold. At the same time though I’d be interested if he brought a book out.
Actually he played a whole season injured and made that clear in his first month at athletico
It’s easy to forget that for a period we had players that came back from the WC semis and were shot to pieces

We’ll probably never know but that game and the Burnley game standout as the possible catalysts for our slump. Poch lost his head, full on William Gallas heads gone against Birmingham when he was a gooner. Something just didn’t look right to me around that time. You also had the Eriksen/Vertonghen fight rumours swirling around (could just be paper talk) and Poch not being happy with his job title and it didn’t seem like a happy camp.

I kinda agree with that too, although, possible narrative parallel, Trippier started really well for us, part of a good defence, in a winning team and contributing a lot of assists, then suddenly started making loads of mistakes.

Burnley was definitely the start of the fall, going into that game, the league was in our hands, there were plenty of games to be played, but had we won out from there it would have been mathematically impossible for anyone else to catch us.

We really did hit a wall.

He was never a good defender, he was slow and dreadful in one on one situations but he compensated for that massively be creating so many chances with his crossing ability, but that dried up in 2018/19 at which point there was literally no point playing him if he couldn’t deliver going forward given what a liability he is at the other end.

That was my impression as well, some players just didn't have it in them to go the yard.
They weren't/aren't winners.
