American politics

I think the tear gas came later with the armed guard. Worth remembering that these are not riot police. They're trained, but spend most of their days telling tourists not to lean on the ropes.

The real problem is the lack of information. I don't know how underground the planning was - I certainly didn't know it was happening until it hit the news. That wasn't the case the last time there was a riot there.

That is entirely possible. Although he's done a very good job of looking after himself and his own, so I would lean towards the narcissist who knows what he's doing over the one who keeps stumbling into a new way of making a very comfortable life for himself.

Obviously racists are the main issue with racism, but I don't think we're going to change them. They're already excluded from polite society, their actions are illegal, short of locking them up for thought crimes when they don't act, I don't know what else we can do.

They will die off though and will not be replaced at the rate they die.

Of course, to show that privilege is a problem, one has to show that the actions of normal, non-racist people differs depending on race - I don't think that's the case except for comparatively rare exceptions.

What the word privilege has become though, is a useful tool for some to devalue the opinions of others based on their gender, race, upbringing, etc.
How underground was this?

Now, Robert Evans is all kinds of great, but he's not the FBI. If he could figure it out, why couldn't law enforcement?

Had this been left wing groups I think the preparation and response would have been very different. See my above post too with comments from someone in the police force.

Would be interested in hearing your examples on what those instances of privelege are. I have a feeling we disagree on how big of a problem it is.

You seem to be arguing based on a fairly narrow definition of racist.

A sizeable crowd of mostly young racists walking with tiki torches chanting "Jews will not replace us" doesn't fill me with hope that racists are dying off and not being replaced.

The president of the US then saying that there were good people on that side doesn't at all fill me with confidence that racists are excluded from "polite society".

Do you consider Trump to be a racist?

If not, do you think he has or has expressed problematic views on this topic? What words do you use to describe that?

Repeating myself somewhat here, but I find it so hard to believe that this would have been the case if it wasn't a right wing, mostly white group of terrorists.

They completely underestimated (or turned a blind eye to) the numbers and intent of the protesters. I agree, black protesters would've been shot before they got to the Capitol.

President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. formally appeared Friday to introduce a new set of top economic officials, building out the team that will help drive his administration’s efforts to restore financial stability to businesses, protect workers and promote American industry.

Mr. Biden has selected Gov. Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island as his commerce secretary, Mayor Martin J. Walsh of Boston as his labor secretary and Isabel Guzman, a former Obama administration official, as head of the Small Business Administration. He has also selected a former aide, Don Graves, as deputy commerce secretary.

Mr. Biden’s selections were announced on Thursday, and he is introducing the four officials at an event in Wilmington, Del.

With his latest picks, Mr. Biden said he had finished naming what he described as a “historic cabinet,” and he said he had fulfilled his promise to assemble a group that “looks like America.”

“This will be the first cabinet ever that is evenly composed with as many women as men in the cabinet,” he said. “This will be the first cabinet ever with a majority of people of color occupying this cabinet.”

Mr. Biden said he had given “serious consideration” to nominating one of his former primary rivals, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, for labor secretary. But Mr. Biden said he and Mr. Sanders agreed that they could not imperil the razor-thin Democratic majority in the Senate by opening Mr. Sanders’s seat to a special election in Vermont.

The event comes as the country’s economic recovery from the pandemic faltered with new data released on Friday showing that employers cut 140,000 jobs in December as virus cases across the country increased. It was the first net decline in payrolls since last spring’s mass layoffs, and though the December loss was nowhere near that scale, it represented a discouraging reversal for the once-promising recovery. The nation’s economy still has roughly 10 million fewer jobs than before the pandemic.

Mr. Biden said the December job losses showed that “we need to provide more immediate relief for working families and businesses now,” and he said he would be “laying out the groundwork” next week for another relief package.

The president-elect also called the distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine a “travesty,” and said billions of dollars would be needed for that effort.

The announcement came on the same day that Mr. Biden’s transition team said he planned to release nearly all available coronavirus vaccine doses “to ensure the Americans who need it most get it as soon as possible.” The move represents a sharp break from the Trump administration’s practice of holding back some of the vaccine for people to receive their second dose.

I absolutely believe Trump is racist.

With regard to my earlier statements on him today, I don't think he would let those beliefs interrupt him amassing money and power for his family, given a choice between the two.

Edit:
I don't think the examples negate my point about polite society being free of racism.

Neither the rednecks you mentioned nor Trump would ever find themselves at a dinner table with those I know - not even from the position of POTUS.

I don't know what happened there. I do know that the neckbeard riot wasn't nearly as publicised as the BLM one because I have no interest in either group but knew (along with the rest of the world) that the BLM one was happening.

For example, when describing racism as being in decline, a regular response is that that is an opinion of privilege and that I couldn't possibly know the extent of racism.

Various media outlets.
This Q Shaman guy was at the BLM protest in Pheonix as a counter-protester fighting against BLM marchers. He is a well-known supporter of the bonkers QAnon conspiracy theory and not some paid actor or antifa operative, as some right-wing media outlets would have you believe. It's just an attempt to deflect some blame.

This is Bellingcat's reconstruction of the events leading to the fatal shooting of that woman. It describes her journey from Obama supporter to being shot by police in the capitol building.

Great read thanks for sharing.

Ultimately i have little to no time for her. If people weren't fussed when Police were killing Breonna Taylor in her own home, then i don't want to hear brick about this lady getting shot as she was breaking and entering the US Capitol building.
