Pierre-Emile Højbjerg

Shaping up to be a Hoijberg kind of a season. As Tottenham supporters, we are thought to place most emphasis on style and exciting football. Our collective appreciation of a player like Hoijberg, who doesn’t meet the ‘sexy’ football type description shows that we can recognise more to football than attacking panache.

Hoijberg has been excellent, so good that’s he’s featured in our top 3 players each month of this season. He’s stopped attacks, played clever and telling passes, and helps us to tick over. I hope, however, he can score a goal soon if only because he has been close on numerous occasions, including yesterday when he shot straight at the keeper, and he’s surely due a goal to add to his otherwise overall excellent play.

Happy to have him at the club, and look forward to him continuing to drive us towards success.

I think as a fan base we appreciate quality however that presents itself, even sometimes overdoing it (the over praise of Sissoko for just about doing the bare minimum and the love of Lamela for not actually doing anything).

We've had a thing for quality DMs think back to how Wanyama was appreciated and further back Sandro was definitely loved and missed. Even Parker was quite popular for a good while. We just like good players whatever their role.

I remember how we were all thankful when we signed Palacios. For too long we had been bullied in central midfield. Having an intelligent strong man in midfield - not someone like that Sheffield United guy - I forget his name but not his face - yes Michael Brown.

It's amazing how good a round peg in a round hole can look when you've been without one for so long - what we could have done with getting someone like him in for the couple of seasons we persisted with a broken Wanyama and a constantly ill Dier.

Tielmans, although not a defensive midfielder, would have also been a good addition to the squad the Jan he went to Leicester. I don’t think Levy would have been against signing “a hojberg” at any stage of his tenure, but that player has to be presented to him and the manager also has to agree to it.

Palacios was excellent. So determined and brave too. When he first signed, he stood out so much. I think it’s great to have a midfielder who is energetic, wins tackles, it’s as creative for the team as an actually creative midfielder. I’ll explain; when a defensive midfielder makes a solid tackle, it gets the team and crowd fired up. It gets the tempo going for the team and pushes them forward with added momentum. It almost acts as a wake up call for the team. It’s exciting in its own way to watch. Maybe exciting, and pulsating are better words than creativity but hopefully I have put my point across.

We do need an understudy for Hoijberg. Could do with signing someone to allow Hoijberg to stay at best condition. But who? I would think Kalvin Phillips but think he would be too pricey.

Could not agree more, The position he plays is one of the most important in any side, goal scorers, defenders are of course important too but a DM/CM is invaluable to the better teams. We now have one again.

Maybe Skipp can step up to that next season.

But, right now, the monotonous, metronomic excellence that Hjobjerg puts out on the pitch is setting a very high bar

Well if they sold us a player they didn’t think was good enough to play in the championship post is loaning him back for 10m, I’d expect their valuation of Phillips will be extortionate!

Skipp is the obvious longer term answer with twenty something full games under his belt already for season.

Would be good if we could find someone that could rotate/work with PEH until Skipp is ready (may not be next season)

Skipp will be ready next season
Don’t forget he plays for a side currently massively over commit in attack yet are top
The lad could come in now IMO

There is talk at Norwich about trying to get him for next season as well.

This was my point (@Bedfordspurs), not is he good enough but are we better served by letting him develop and get game time.

He's going to play every game of a long Championship season, he's just turned 20, if they get promoted I could see us giving him another full season of development vs. the odd rotation game with us. He is a long term investment for the club.

Everyone talks about Grealish, but I really don't know if Grealish would be the player he is if we/someone else bought him two summers ago and he got 15 games a season not being the player that the team relied on.

Agreed. If we had him now then it would solve the Winks or Sissoko dilemma, particularly against stronger teams. I'd be concerned that a PEH-Skipp partnership wouldn't give enough support to the forwards and would barely get any goals between them all season, but Skipp replacing Sissoko and then bringing in a new box-to-box CM would be ideal
