Coronavirus

Trump's travel ban didn't apply to US residents, was limited to people who had been to China but was after the disease had spread to multiple countries, including the US.

Spain was the main country where we imported it from. We had months between the initial outbreak and then to develop plans for managing it. I doubt that we could've kept it out indefinitely but we could've delayed it. We could've maintained a test and isolation policy for longer, if we had kept numbers down.

The argument playing off public health and economic impact is false. The countries that have suffered the least economic impact are the ones that were proactive and lockdown early.

The most important thing would've been maintaining track and trace though. A travel ban in isolation would've done nothing.

Already booked on le shuttle for 28th Dec. As I’m in tier 4, does the business exemption still apply?
For me to travel from Tier 4 for a meeting in the 13th jan I’ve got a letter signed by the Secretary of State for defence ... and even the I’m now kind thinking is it worth the agro

@Danishfurniturelover I think that you are right though that it would've been a politically bold decision at the time that would've met a lot of resistance.

I think that we are in the position we are in now because we have always been more concerned about the short term political impact but that has been the driving force of UK politics for decades.

Johnson is like Bliar he governs by focus groups.

  1. She's right. We should just replace all the people here with sheep then the problem will go away
  2. Wouldn't mind a go on Jacinda's tits, assuming she has a paper bag handy.

You obviously just post brick like this for the reaction. However fudging sad are you.

I mean every single word of it.

Sheep don't get COVID (AFAIK) and I'd quite like a go on her tits (although I wouldn't want to have to see her face).

Is the alarming thing, that all your cogent points on this were pretty clear from spring? I gave up on this government making any meaningful impact on covid in the UK soon after. It seemed like their strategy was to limit the impact on the NHS, and that was really it. The embarrassment is that while they try to control the impact on NHS, the government are spending many many billions that we'll have to pay back on flawed measures that they themselves don't believe in. Test and trace never worked. Working test centers arrived 7 months after the UK needed them and are now just for show. Tonnes of PPE that will pass its use by date and be thrown away.

The greatest failing of government is that they have been not one step behind, but several. From taking the virus seriously as it was clear it was causing mass deaths in China and Iran, to preparing the UK for what was to come, to ignoring calls for a September lockdown so that Christmas could take place, this government has been playing catch up the whole time.

I guess it's related to being locked down and realising the sad extent of his life.
:D

See. Australians can be funny - you just remember that when the world laughs at (not with) you next time.

I haven't been locked down at any point. I've continued to go to work, other than the initial lockdown I've continued to do what I'd normally do.

I'll certainly be heading out of the locked down areas for some meals and possibly the odd night away over the Christmas period too.

That just says a lot about the kind of person you are. Perfect storm combination of stupid and irresponsible. No wonder the south east of the UK is in the mess it’s in.

Off topic but where do you draw the line if the Jacinda comment is too much for you?

I don't like most of what Scara says, he's a prick, but I am not sure his comments this time warrant any outrage.

They don't warrant any outrage - this is just snowflaking for attention.

Did the govt not foresee the travel chaos that announcement would make?

They have had the data for days, why wait until the end of the last Saturday to drop it?
