I rewatched the game again this morning and I he was genuinely outstanding. It wasn’t the fact they gave him time and he used it. It was what he did with it, which was take passes n aren’t simple and keep the ball moving which made it harder for United
He ran the show. And don’t forget it was him that Martial ran past first for their penalty so he could have reacted differently.

I have a feeling he will be our new carrick in opinion ... some games he will look effective and others he will not ... but no matter the game he would always have done his job.
 
The only problem I have is that this position is the only one we don't have cover for. Others can do a job there but not with the same level.

Agreed, but I don't think we need him as much for teams that sit back, for me

- His impact is enhanced by Ndombele in side (Ndombele doesn't turn over possesion and can hold on to ball)
- Against teams that sit back (and many will when facing Son, Kane, Bale, with two FBs that can push up), Winks can rotate in for him

Keep him of the big games, rotate in Winks/Sissoko for lesser teams

Can't fix it all in one window - Sissoko out and competition for Hojberg next summer seems like an obvious move if we are to assume Winks will be needed (HG) and Ndombele continues to find his feet

Good to hear and you do not always need to have a team full of great players, attitude of the players and how they work for each other is just as important.
 
I finally got to watch the game today and my word Hojberg was fantastic. He does so many little things that aren't particularily noticeble but all play their part. I recall in the 2nd half there was one UTD counter where he closed the passing lane and without even making any sort of challenge the attacking player had to go for another option and their attack fizzled out. Its those sort of moments that a DM really earns their money but they are actions that aren't easily recorded in the statistics.

On the ball as well he was very good, hes good good passing range and yes his execiution isn't perfect but hes more than willing to play line breaking passes. It just helps us stay on the front foot so much. Very happy with his contribution especially as he is looking more and more settled. I don't think its a coincidence that he is the first player Jose went for, we had a gaping hole in the middleof the park previously.

I don't think that is the case. Winks, Hojbjerg and Sissoko have all played at the base of midfield and Lo Celso can play there too. They aren't like for like replacements but they give us options. Hojbjerg has also been played in a more advanced position in some games, so it is not as if we have signed him as a specialist in one position.

Right now it’s him, Lo Celso or Tubby and one other
I’d argue that the other is sissoko or winks and over time oh could be PEH, Lo Celso, Ndombele as first choice - winks, sissoko and Gedson as back up or alternatives

Next season we add Skipp and let Sissoko go, plus Gedson and maybe acquire another player

I suggested letting Sissoko go to bring in Hojberg competition next summer and you shot it down - Skipps game being a defensive midfielder of sorts is what i would consider that sort of player
