As much as I dont like Mourinho's tactics, against Man U's pace (James, Rashford, Martial), it makes sense to defend deep.

Where we failed last night was that the central trio (Winks and Sissoko in CM and Lamela as no 10) failed to impose themselves on the game at all (in a positive way) until some aggressive closing down by Sissoko in the second half. If those 3 had bossed the middle of the park, we'd have strolled the game

Yet united took off their midfield as they were creating so little despite having the ball...
Oh and to add to that Lo Celso won more ball than any spurs player and he was in for 20 mins

Yep, shows the performance level of those 3. I cut Kane, Son and Bergwijn some slack given the performance of the 3 behind them

No chance he’s here for 3 more years. This collection of players have not got a trophy in them.

We need 2 centre backs and a right back. A proper DM and have needed a second striker for a few seasons.

Lloris, Dier, GLC, Son, Dele, Bergwijn, Kane could be 7 starters in a title-winning team, so your 'this collection' comment I agree with if you mean this exact squad, but I dont think we're a million miles off having a genuinely top team...though in my view it needs a RB, CB, LB and DM

If you add a decent player in each of those positions, and I do mean decent rather than squad fillers, we'd be challenging right at the top. For example, add Chilwell at LB, Ruben Neves as a DM, Pereira at RB and a dominating CB and we'd be excellent. Problem is that we need £150m-£200m to bring that quality in

Horrible, horrible selection 2 brain-dead and the other a academy cat. As a grouped selection they are lower midtable, they really really are.

I thought that the performance and application of tactics was quite good. I just don't like the tactics.
I agree to an extent, but in my opinion I’ve been seeing some good signs that we are becoming more solid under Mourinho which we have to be if we are ever going to be successful. When Lo Celso and NDombele are fit (if ever with NDombele) we are instantly much more creative and we can still remain just as solid overall as they both contribute defensively, especially Lo Celso. This season was always going to be a write off since Pochs demise, and I’m comfortable Mourinho is going to get us back firing come next season. I don’t believe yesterday’s performance was that bad considering we’ve play one friendly match in the last three months, we didn’t even have home advantage and against a team who were bang in form albeit before the lockdown - it wasn’t a bad point all in all....

That’s my point , you need a squad to win things. We were awful without Son and Kane this season.

That’s a whole defence that’s not coming cheap.
I worry about Kane , think injury’s have taken their toll and his best days are gone sadly.

Or shows how our midfield two dealt with things coming at them to limit united to speculative shots
8 player massed ranks really doesn't say anything for defensive quality or strength. We've seen that numerous times when we've struggled against hunkered in opponents. Sheer numbers can restrict chances, there's nothing special about doing that.

In principle I have nothing against sitting deep and hitting on the counter but you need to have correct players. We had pace in the wide areas but no one capable of playing them into space.

Winks is too safety first, Sissoko can't pass more than 5 yards and only sideways or backwards and while Lamela does have the vision his passing execution is bloody horrible.

I don't really know how Jose expected to get the ball forwards, there was no one on the pitch able or willing to play a ball into space with a little bit of backspin. Pretty much the only time the ball broke ino space freely for one of our attackers in Beegwijn he scored from it. Otherwise we created very little and seemed to be relying on one of Son or Beegwijn to beat 2 or 3 players on the run. That's just not a realistic expectation to have.

But lamela was what... 3rd choice at best for that role
Lo Celso came on and changed the impetus for us. It’s a shame he wasn’t fit enough to start
The united midfield by comparison, because that’s what we should compare it too we’re all huff and puff and didn’t create anything of note either. The difference came in their first choice no 10 playing vs our 3rd choice who is really wasteful as he doesn’t pass quick

We played a united team fully fit with every player available. We were yet again missing some key players.
we IMO looked solid defensively and very capable in the counter which is a valid tactic
The issue is when you don’t have the players you need on the bench and they do it can change the game, like it did.
And if our key creative role has lamela there who is way down the pecking order for that role, vs their first choice we would what’s struggle by comparison.
I thought the team looked really well organised for once (something we haven’t seen for 18 months), and if we had the right fresh legs on after 60 mins we would have got the win. i
I’ll also add that I would have taken Kane off for NDombele around 65 mins and move son up top, against their slowish centre backs

What were Stevie, son and Kane's average position? It seemed to me there was seldom one of them ahead of lamela.
Stevie certainly had the beating of them on the break, yet it seldom happened because he was backing up his FB.
What's the point of counter attacking if we don’t break forward quick enough.
Son and Stevie are flyers, Sissoko and aurier are fairly quick and yet got behind or turned two lumbering CBs twice?
The couple of chances lamela had to release the ball early it was two against four or five.

There were quite a lot of times they were ahead of him only fit him to not release it
Hence why players then come deeper and deeper
Twice fernandes played a quick one touch pass and both times united had chances
Lamela doesn’t do quick passing I’m afraid and it kills counter attacks

Ahead when we had the ball?
I don't remember too many occasions and certainly not when we were breaking.
As for fernades quick passing, utd were set up to attack, we were set up to defend, there was no one there to play quick passes with.

As much as Lamela was certainly a problem he is not the only problem. You still need to get the ball to quickly to whoever is playing ACM and neither of Winks or Sissoko are willing and capable of doing so.

Lo Celso looks good when he plays because he's strong and more importantly can beat a man to make himself some space to play the pass. But still he's never going to be enough by himself, more ball players are needed in the side and we need to break up the Sissoko/Winks gruesome twosome once again (I thought Jose had already learnt this).

Certainly agree with this. He takes 5-10 touches when 1-2 would be far better.

Unfortunately its too late in his career to change the way he plays, and is partly why I'd sell him this summer if there are any takers. Sign Fraser from Bournemouth on a freebie and, along with Moura, use him as an understudy to Son/Bergwijn, with Dele and Ndombele as options for the no 10 role. Then use the cash from Lamela sale to put towards the defensive reinforcements needed
