Toby Alderweireld

If Vertonghen signs a new contract we would have two experienced old-timers and two young centre backs. Not a bad situation if it means the older players can rotate and the young ones learn from playing with them. Ideally we'd have a player at his peak, but this would mean we could focus on other areas.

The Alderweireld saga just shows that even the best managers have their weaknesses. Poch really mishandled the situation with him. Shutting players out is not a good approach unless they are being really unprofessional. Hopefully his form improves now the uncertainty is over and he will get more playing time.

Watch us when we are defending, both fullbacks are inside the box and close to the centre backs. It's one of the reasons why we are conceding less from crosses now, which was a real problem earlier this season.

If we have one player in the squad who I fancy to get his positioning wrong or challenge for a header he shouldn't have being left on the floor with a hole left in our back line it's Sanchez.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen aren't the biggest or strongest, but a lot more often than not they get the job done. Not only in the air, but in other aspects of the game too. Both can play full back, in the modern game in an attacking task centre backs find themselves in situations that were more common for full backs in the past.

I've heard claims about Sanchez being at the same level as the Belgians since shortly after he started playing for us. He's still not at their level and that's ignoring quality on the ball.

If Vertonghen signs as well we'll be pretty much sorted at centre back for another 18 months I think, Alderweireld longer than that. Gives Sanchez and Foyth time to step up if they're capable, saving us an investment that we need elsewhere.

Alderweireld is a big new contract, if we could add Vertonghen it would be absolutely massive.

I know their ages. I just think Jan is more important for us and would rather we brought the youngsters through alongside Verts rather than play two ageing centre backs. Wouldn't have been unhappy to have seen Toby sold last summer. That no one snapped out hands off for a relatively low transfer fee, speaks volumes.

I think it’s mostly jilted lover syndrome tbh. Was the same nonsense when Trippier replaced Walker. Now that Toby has signed a new deal I’m guessing no one will say Sanchez is better. Other than @galeforce but that’s just his delusional nature :)

I there's any truth to Alderweireld moving the goal posts after Poch asked Levy to give him what he originally asked for, then Poch was very much in the right.

True. But the resulting impasse was presumably a factor behind Levy pulling the lever and ejecting Poch into the piranha tank. I do hope that Toby has taken a bit of a bath on the eventual financial package, though.

I agree but also think Levy has looked at our “patchy” (at best) record in the transfer market and concluded it is better to go with a known entity than gamble big money on a replacement. Let’s hope Toby goes from strength to strength now he is signed and settled again.

This guy represents one of the great pi55-takes in football media. He's a staunch Arsenal fan and was up to no end of Spurs-baiting mischief whilst working for The Daily Goonergraph. Now, he's a Spurs beat writer for The Athletic, sharing space with avowed ManCity supporter Jack Pitt-Brooke. How does something that unlikely come about?

The Athletic's senior football editor, Brooks Peck, is an Arsenal supporters and has packed his squad of club beat writers with fellow gooners. The thinking with Spurs, no doubt, was that as things continued to go sour under Pochettino, they'd have a grand time digging up dirt and poking fun at them. With Pitt-Brooke, there's an anti-Spurs agenda due to the hurt Spurs have caused City in recent times (even back to 2010, qualifying for CL with a 1-0 win at City).

Thanks to Daniel Levy's decisiveness, it hasn't totally gone to plan for The Arseletic.
