Harry Kane MBE

Son could have passed earlier that half as well, our forward play is too selfish sometimes.
Yup, although Son did make amends when he squared it to Kane on the edge of the 6 yard box but Harry decided against hitting the ball first time and the opportunity was lost.

Hopefully it’s just early season rustiness and we’ll see their A-game after the international break.

Yes it is a contact sport, and I have not even commented on the body clash/legs because that is up for debate. Putting two hands on a player and shoving them is -to me- nothing to do with playing the ball or incidental contact. It is what it says on the tin. There is no reason for Sokratis to be so clumsy and oafish!

Vardy? I cannot say I watch Leicester enough to be appalled or otherwise by his penalty box movement. Ham Salad looks for contact and if you’re stupid you make it. The goal he scored against us last season at Anfield was all about that; try and tackle me if you can, but if you miss and tap my ankle instead, down I will go.

This “Kane diver” thing is on the verge of lunacy IMO. Like when he said he touched the ball for a goal; next thing it was a national fudging crisis.

For me it could easily have been a pen. It wasn’t given. Whatever. Onwards. Except not really sadly...

I think you are over exaggerating steff. People are naturally sceptical as Kane has previous for going to ground too easily and manufacturing contact. He’s certainly not the only one but he’s the England captain and one of the most high profile players in the league so maybe that’s why it’s highlighted more. Certainly don’t think there’s any witch-hunt or anything like that.

It’s natural for fans to defend their own but I don’t like to see players go down like that especially when they could stay on their bloody feet and score or set up an easy chance for a teammate. No one ever seems to mention that. What happened to trying to score or create an opportunity for someone else rather than taking the easy option and falling to the ground and trying to “win a penalty”?

What do you think of the numerous times a game players goes down in the middle of the pitch to win a foul to relieve pressure on his team? These 'dives' seem to be considered part of the game and even to be encouraged yet ones in the box seem to draw a different response

KANE TACKLES ATTEMPTED PER 90 MINUTES, BY SEASON
  • 2013-14 - 1.6
  • 2014-15 - 1.6
  • 2015-16 - 1.8
  • 2016-17 - 1.1
  • 2017-18 - 0.8
  • 2018-19 - 0.9
  • 2019-20 - 0.3

So okay, Harry is tackling less often these days. Not that much of a surprise considering the ankle injuries he's sustained over recent seasons.

But read on:

It was an opening that could have been tailor-made for Harry Kane. The 198th North London derby was in its dying minutes, and in a broken, scrappy climax Giovani Lo Celso had won the ball on the Tottenham right and was advancing diagonally towards the edge of the penalty area. With Arsenal stretched, it was the perfect opportunity for a little reverse ball into the path of Kane for a famous Tottenham winner.

Except Kane wasn’t making the run. In fact, he wasn’t making any sort of run at all. When Lo Celso won the ball, Kane was close to him in the right channel, but instead of bursting into the area in anticipation of the pass, he lurched forward at barely higher than walking pace: chest heaving, legs heavy, the efforts of the previous 80 minutes having left him utterly exhausted.

And to watch Kane in the last half-hour of Sunday’s game was to glimpse a curiously bathetic performance, the sight of one of the Premier League’s most dynamic players reduced to a weary, trundling husk: unable to summon the energy to show for the ball, win the ball, or even do very much with the ball once he got it. At one point he went 15 minutes without a single touch. Late on, he knocked the ball promisingly past Granit Xhaka, realised he had neither the pace nor the inclination to chase it, and simply crumpled to the turf and accepted the foul.

A couple of minutes later, deep into injury time, came the moment that would ensure his face would be splattered all over the following morning’s back pages. With Tottenham on the attack, he took the ball into the area, considered trying to beat Sokratis, but instead simply got his body in between the defender and the ball, stopped abruptly, and allowed Sokratis to clatter into the back of him.

It wasn’t a dive, per se. There was very definitely contact between Sokratis and Kane. But it was a contact that Kane himself had induced, a sort of footballing brake test, a dastardly little trick with which he had doubtless won countless fouls in the past. And it was in large part, a course of action forced upon him by his own fatigue, his inability to do anything other than seek the contact and crumple gratefully to the turf.

The suggestion he was way too knackered after 80 minutes on Sunday to summons up anything more than a stroll, on the face of it that is very worrying.

My only thought is that Poch is renowned for pushing his players to the limits in training at the start of the season, the idea being to build their strength so they can outlast the opposition in the latter stages. We are generally known for being slow starters because of the rigours of our early season regime.

On top of that we also know that Kane is one of the last to leave the training field. Let's hope that's what this is really about, and nothing more.

Guess we need a second striker and Pochettino must deliberately bench Kane in some matches. There is only so much one can do especially with the demands of his tactics.

That was Kane’s argument

They won numerous fouls in that game with minimal contact that got them free kicks. Torreira went win like a Dutch kitten every time he was breathed on for example

It’s a dive wherever it is on the pitch. Clearly they get more attention in the box as they lead to penalties which usually lead to goals which change games.

I think diving is so ingrained in the game now that I would struggle to name players that don’t do it. Arsenal complained about Son when he won a penalty last season against them and then they had 3 players booked for diving a matter of weeks later.

I don’t think Kane does it more than Vardy, Salah or anyone else but I think he has definitely does it in my opinion and to say he doesn’t which some are suggesting is a bit disingenuous and makes us look hypocritical when we criticise other teams.

Don't think the article should be dismissed though.

The reoccurring injuries and the change in formation and Kane's own playing style lend to the idea something has changed.

A big change.... son
When Kane was banging them in we didn’t have son as a player alongside him.
Now we have to fit Kane and son in and their both brilliant

No. I think all of us argued exactly the same point after last season's game at Wembley where Aubameyang was awarded a penalty for a pretty much identical situation (with far less contact from Sanchez than Kane had from Sokratis). So far this season I think we are level par on penalty decisions (we should've been awarded one against Saudi Sportswashing Machine and should've had one awarded against us against Emirates Marketing Project). I have no problem with the decision yesterday, just as long as that decision is consistently applied for both us and our opponents this season.

You just binning off Dele’s one Sunday?

I read that and thought that doesn’t seem very balanced or impartial, more of a fan piece, so I googled the author. The first few lines on Wikipedia:

It’s difficult to argue with some of the points tho. I commented to pals that he looked a little lack lustre against Saudi Sportswashing Machine, far less movement and sharpness than I’m used to seeing.

Then more than one incident Sunday that left me thinking he wasn’t 100%. The push past Xhaka (I think) and not winning the foot race. The pen incident where 9 times out of 10 I’d expect him to spot GLC (Fatigue?).

I’m really surprised Son came off instead of H. H looked out on his feet and Son was still buzzing around. If Moura had come on for Kane and paired with Son, we’d have had a similar setup to the one that caused City problems twice last season and you would like to think with Arsenal chucking bodies forward, we’d have been able to cause massive problems on the break.

Considering the amount they were committing forward, I was really disappointed with how few chances we fashioned in the 2nd half. We should have been able to pick them off at will in those situations.

I said a few times and everyone mocked me. But Kane has played as a lone striker in a Poch pressing team for 5 years.

He is close to being finished. He has 2 seasons at the top left in him due to the amount of running he has to do.

I think this is also the real reason Eriksen wants to leave and the reason we ruin central midfielders. The high pressing game takes the edge off players.

Based on this part of an interview

https://thesetpieces.com/interviews/vox-in-the-box-jonathan-liew/

I can’t ever remember you saying who your team is…

Off the record – entirely off the record – Spurs. Actually, you know what, you can write that but you have to also write the full story. And that’s that my first team is Spurs and my second team is Arsenal. It’s a very clear one-two. They’re not joint favourites by any means, but I do like them both.

How does that happen?

I come at things very logically and rationally. And while Spurs is a very emotional thing, that came from school days, as I grew older I started to question ‘why do I instinctively have to hate Arsenal? I admire their manager, I admire their football.’ And Spurs and Arsenal are demographically the same, there’s no sectarian split there. They’re the same. They should merge. They really should merge. I’m a North London fan.

North London Rovers.

Yeah, North London Rovers. Spursnal. Arsenham. Do it. They should share a stadium. They should play in each other’s kits when they go away from home. That should be the next step. Arsenal should play in a white away kit and Tottenham should play in a red away kit. Eventually they’ll turn ever so slightly pink and then suddenly one day, nobody even notices, they’re both wearing the same colour shirt, with the same sponsor and they’re called Arsenham. That’s the dream.

Yes parts of that are nonsense. But when he writes about Spurs it always to me appears with an embittered long suffering frustrated air that knows it's all gonna end in tears. And he is obsessed with Lamela like only Spurs fans are.

I ask you again; did Sokratis lay two hands on Kane and shove him? Forget anything else, I would simply appreciate your response to that question. As for “staying on their bloody feet and score or set up an easy chance” etc, I find it hard to believe Kane would not rather do either, however, regardless of whether he has checked his run slightly or not, why has Sokratis laid two hands on him and shoved? That action has nothing to do with playing the
ball. One other question; is it against the rules to not run full pelters when one on one?

There was a decision to be made. I think Atkinson bottled it. You don’t. And now we have a “cheat” narrative.

Madness.

Yes he did lay his hands on him but not enough to force Kane to go to ground the way he did. Sanchez regularly shoves people but not every shove is a foul.

I appreciate some dives will split opinion but you seem to be suggesting that Kane doesn’t ever dive? Sorry but there have definitely been times when he has dragged his leg against an opponent and manufacture
