Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

Isn't he basically saying he wants more money to spend (If we want him to stick around for 20 years)? He's not happy just getting top 4, he wants to win the league. If we give him the tools, he'll stay; he's got no excuse.
He's either using the man u situation for leverage, or if he knows for a fact that there is no more money, he's starting his exit strategy.

Reads to me that he is saying in order to do more than what we are, to be fighting with the best sides regularly for titles we need to have more money to spend, that it is very tough to maintain our position continuing how we are, but at the same time he's clearly saying that that isn't our position as a club at the moment financially and it isn't the project that he signed up for.

I don't see where the ultimatum you propose is placed in those quotes tbh

Funny how Sky highlight Pochettino’s comments about the club needing to operate in a different way. While at least two others including the Bbc lead with the 20 year remarks.
And most back pages say Poch hints at exit
Amazing how they intepret something all so differently

But if after we want to win titles we need to operate in a different way.
Of course we’re doing a fantastic job but if we want to be real contenders we need to operate in a different way in the future.
But when you are in charge like a coach or a manager, like what happened with Arsene Wenger, that they were building the new stadium but at the same moment you have a lot of limitations and the people demand you to win but you don’t have the same tools to fight with other clubs.
We will see if we can stay for a long long way like this. I think not but in football anything can happen.
Do you think he would have made all those points to Levy in private first?
If he got the answer he wanted, would he make those points public?
I think he's either applying slight pressure, or getting his reasons in early. Time will tell.

To be fair the BBC are just as bad and originally had this headline - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/46787470 - but it changed overnight.

Why they have so many Spurs "Have your say"s I'll never know. We post some sh!te on here but jeez!

Im not sure what you mean regarding making those points to Levy, he's reiterating that we are in a different position to clubs like City and Liverpool until we move in to the stadium, i would have thought these quotes echo the thoughts of the club - i doubt very much Levy needs it pointed out to him that we don't have the money to spend on players that our rivals do and that with regards to winning titles when competing with clubs that can we are likely to come up short/find it tough - thats why the target, or pressure as he puts it, isn't to win the league it's to arrive in the new stadium in the top 4 - when we have the money to compete the pressure/target will shift but as he says aatm he has us ahead of where the club expected to be and so the only pressure is coming from his own desire/ambition to win.

I think that's a pretty fair reflection of the dialogue as a whole

I agree.

With Poch, I think that it is normally best to take his comments at face value and not look for any subtext.

He says we can't expect to keep challenging for the title unless we invest, but nowhere is he making any demands or threatening to leave.

Yes, but he's also talked about our 'project' being in different parts, the first one being the investment in the stadium, training ground etc. I expect he'll given it a couple years to see whether things change after the stadium is finished - there were also rumours about him seeking assurances from Levy before he signed his new contract, which is in keeping with this as well

On the transfer funds point - can anyone point to good articles that explain the financial impact of our new stadium? How much of it we’ve paid for so far, how much we have left to pay, over how much time, what our expected increase in revenue will be etc?

I don’t see how Levy’s claim that it hasn’t affected our transfer spending can possibly be true. Indeed, it’s surely no coincidence that our net spend over the last 10 years has been negative. At the same time, the fact that that’s true surely means that we’ve paid a good amount of the costs up front?

...the most important thing that I accept that challenge when Daniel Levy called me to offer a contract here. He was clear - him and Joe Lewis. And they say to me on this - and this guy was in front (points at Jesus Perez) - they said: ‘Mauricio, you need to prepare and to help the club to arrive to the new stadium.
When we finish the new stadium, in the first season on the new stadium, [we need] to have a team that can finish in the top four in the season after.’ We are in advance, no? That is why sometimes I laugh when the people say we need to win a trophy. Yes, but look at the project - how we are in advance. And that is true and you can ask Joe Lewis or Daniel Levy or ask Jesus. That is what they say to me. But we are so ambitious and we have the ambition to win. Of course, we want to win and be competitive and that it is in the way we are now. But I accept that challenge. But now we cannot say the club is in a position that is all bad.
I think we are in an amazing position. The club is finishing the new stadium, one of the best stadiums in the world. The team is so competitive that we are involved for the third season in a row in the Champions League, playing the last year and a half in Wembley away from home. What more? Of course win and I want to win tomorrow. I want to win Sunday. I want to win, yes of course. But we will see if we can do something important.

He is saying that he has met the challenge that was asked of him, earlier then expected. If Levy/Lewis now want him to push for the title, then that is a new challenge ('project') that will need to be approached in a different way (through funding) in the future.
I think he is simply saying that expectations on us winning the title or CL now are unfair because that is not what he was tasked to do and we are not - currently - operating in a way to make that our main aim (for good reason, the stadium). His expectation (imo) is that once we are seeing the rewards of the new stadium things should be, and will need to be, different.
I believe he could conceivably give us another couple of years to see if the new stadium does indeed provide the required funds to compete at the elite level (It is never going to be a level playing field of course). As long as he doesn't burn bridges with potential suitors, then given the modern managerial-merry-go-round, he will have opportunities in the future I am sure.

I’ve yet to see one clear article on it. All I’ve seen is “it costs a billion so that’s bad.”

What we really need to know is:
1. How much have we borrowed
2. Have we spent the 200m we had in the bank at the end of 2017
3. Over how many years is it repayable and how much do we repay per year
4. How much extra revenue is the stadium projected to generate per year

As I see it, 4 - 3 = our extra revenue (or deficit) while we pay the thing off and 4 = extra revenue after that time.

Think its Poch's way of not letting things go stale sometimes, as much as we hate it as fans by him at least externally keeping people guessing. In a really strange way if we have all this uncertainty about Poch until May/June and then he says im staying 100% or signs a renewed contract, it would give everyone a lift for the next season.

Not sure how many times he can play that trick before it becomes boy who cried wolf, but whilst it works its not a bad plan if thats what hes doing

I agree, but then he says he's now no longer happy just making top 4, he wants to win things, and he doesn't want to end up like Wenger did in his final years. To do this we need to invest money in the team, which is a change from the current zero net spend.

Poch is keeping all options on the table. He’d love to develop the club in the new stadium and win things - he sees the opportunity - but he has options.

If there is one player we can pull out a hat this month it would be a lift - for the squad, the fans and show intent.

Thats how it reads to me.

Seemed pretty obvious, I thought.

There is also 5 and 6

5. How much money will naming rights bring in when we finally agree a deal
6. Dependent upon 5., are we likely to refinance our debt to make it even more manageable?

For me, the stadium is a money making machine. And it will make money to ourstrip its costs. I think itll be able to service its debts, but if not - it should be close.

All while the club is taking record sums from the league, as well as its on field performance.

I dont expect us to compete with City and Utd on wages etc, but I am confindent we will be able to raise ours significantly.

And, in a sustainable fashion.
