Summer 2018 transfer thread

I’d had a sneaky suspicion that we were going to do a loan to buy deal on Gomes from Barcelona, but his injury the other day put paid to that.

Another we have been linked too long enough that there "has" to be something to it.

Like Zaha, Martial, Rabiot...

I didnt realise he got injured though, was it serious?

So to turn this thread on it’s head.... instead of considering players that we are linked to in the press or by the self proclaimed ‘ITKs’....

What clubs currently need to sell players (for FFP, to balance the books or to make way for incomings) and what players might be considered expendable by those clubs that could be a reasonable fit for us from those clubs?

Juventus and PSG spring to mind. Liverpool have spent loads. City and Utd have both spent a fair bit - but also have large squads that may need trimming.

As to who that leaves available I dont know!

Totally agree 400%

But I had been ridiculed, I say ridiculed;) when I even intermated the money 'may' be tight this window back in March.
I got "the stadium won't affect the transfers" quote thrown at me, which I always thought was gonads. Thus the 'retractable pitch' when reading about other teams transfers, childish I know:cool:.
Quite a few on here thought we would be rolling in it this window. I think looking back I was a little swayed I suppose by their hope and enthusiasm. Now here we are, you have a pop at me for expecting too much.
Got to love football.
Don't think we will ever be rolling in it, relatively speaking.
The mancs, arsenal and Liverpool will always have more money than us.
It's about how we use ours that matter.

Not when you could easily earn even more elsewhere you wouldn’t, especially if you felt that a poor season might harm your personal brand.

I like Pochettino but he's no saint and £8m pa is up there with the top jobs in Europe (allegedly). So he will say what he is told to IMHO....I would:oops:

Building a £1billion stadium leaves me a little perplexed as we sit here. Please don't get me wrong we need a new stadium and I love 'most' of what I see. I am having trouble squaring it all away atm

PSG and Villa are the two that spring to mind, but both have sorted their affairs a bit more compared to say a month ago

It's not just that though. My favoured trio of signings would be De Ligt (Ajax's whole model is buy low to sell high), Martial (fallen out with manager and short contract, plus they want Alder who is in the same situation re manager and contract) and Kovacic (down the pecking order, limited game time for 2 seasons; Moura-esque in that way). So there are other reasons why our targets are obtainable.

You do realize that it isn’t actually a £1billion stadium don’t you?.... The Evening Standard interview with Donna Cullen over the weekend clarified this.

At the end of last season I thought we needed two..... a wing forward who could also play through the middle and a central midfielder. I still think that is all we need unless we sell any of our existing first team squad.
Agree, no major surgery needed. I thought we’d at least of got a Cm before now though, as I think that was an area that needed strengthening before the injuries we’d suffered. I might be wrong but I’m guessing many are disappointed because Poch spoke about getting his targets in nice and early for pre season and for whatever reason hasn’t been delivered to him. But as it’s only a couple of specific areas that need upgrading it’s not too late....

I think Barcelona also need to do some book balancing don’t they?

Otherwise what about players in The Netherlands, Belgium, Austria or even the smaller boys in France?.... where you can financially bully the clubs into selling.... any gems there worth us picking up? Red Bull Salzburg must’ve had some decent players to get to the semis of the Europa League last season?

Its something like £400m stadium, then in addition the costs of getting land etc.

Much of which, I would imagine, has already been paid - we have been buying up the surrounding land for years, for example.

I would be curious to know just how much debt we are taking on here, I suspect it will be less than most expect.

And factor in all the profits made by selling all the 'enabling development' - the Sainsburys, college and the new towerblock behind Park Lane. There's also the site off WHL itself that we've been using for storing materials to dispose of.

I think the face that we secured a £350 million loan facility in the not too distant past indicates the max amount of debt envisaged to complete the stadium.

There was an ITK on a West Ham forum (* I know, I know but this window is so boring) bemoaning the fact that over the past ten years we bought a load of land surrounding the stadium (different holding companies) for around £350M and with the re-gen it will be worth nearer £700M.

No idea if true but its certainly something I would do if I knew prices were going to go up in the near future. At worst you have a load of property / land in London which is as close to a one way bet you can have.

Hadnt actually considered that angle, only the idea we bought land we needed for the site. Would be pure Levy though wouldnt it!?

We were buying up the Wingate estate piece-by-piece (except Archway) from back in the Sugar days, so perhaps it's confusion with that?

Or, at least, as close as you could get until June 2016. Still, any land which you can grow turnips on will be worth defending from mutants and scavengers.

We’ve been buying land around the old stadium plot for nigh on 15 years now, since the first murmurings of a stadium being built, but I thought it was so that we can demolish it and build on the site? Not that we’d have real estate to hold for profit?

The basis of the story is true but I think the £ numbers involved are nowhere near.
