World Cup 2018 Group D (Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria)

Messi quit international football, Ronnie didnt, there's some really bad stuff in the Argie set up which we don't know about now but will come out in a few years when Messi pens a book deal.

In the last 7 years, Barca has won 1 CL. Yes, he won 2 others under 23 in a very good (most people rate as one of the great club sides).

The fact is, as Barca's supporting cast dipped (only a fraction) and with a pretty good generation of Argentina players, he hasn't delivered final prize,

I have no issue that some people think he's better than Ronaldo (personally the stats say otherwise, but that's interpretation as well), my problem is people believe (see this thread) that he's a walk for the greatest player ever. Far worse players than Messi have carried their teams further than he has …

It is going to be a tense match for Argentina against Nigeria. They need to beat Nigeria and hope Iceland don't win against Croatia to enable them progress to Second Round. Argentina's attack has looked toothless in this World Cup with Messi going missing so far. It will be interesting how Messi and company will react in this match. Nigeria played well against Iceland and won't make it easy for Argentina. History books won't forgive this Argentina team if they fail to win and exit the World Cup in the group stages.

Croatia are going to have a big say who will finish behind them in this group. They have already said they will rest many players for this match against Iceland. I think FIFA should force Croatia to play their best team against Iceland as it will be like match-fixing if they rest players and help Iceland win easy. Iceland did finish above Croatia in the World Cup qualifiers. So Iceland don't need any help from Croatia anyway. Also, Croatia have won both their matches without conceding any goals so far. It will affect their winning momentum in the next round if they let Iceland beat them.

I think Croatia have earned the right to rest who they want. Losing with 10 changes won't effect/affect (i never know) their momentum.
Argentina put themselves in this position. They know it's up to them to just get a win and hope for the best.

The world cup is a squad game and the manager can play anyone he likes. If he wants Luka Modric in goal, that is his choice. Croatia have earned the right to experiment and rest players.

I so agree with this. Which is why I heavily disagreed with the fine given to Wolves (I think) some years back for fielding a weakened side against Manure or one of the other Sky Four.

Yes, it might be unfair, but football is a team game and it should be up to no other person than the manager to decide which players to play when, in the best interest of his own team. Why have a squad if you face penalties for using it?

The cups used to have a provision that teams should field the strongest available side. Putting out a weaken side was against the rules. Not sure if the rule was formally removed.

In the PL and CL (with 25 man squads) and the international tournaments (with 23 man squads) there can be no doubt it is a squad game.

I'd normally agree with you put I need a win or a draw from Croatia to win one of my GG sweepstake bets.

That's just fudging ridiculous ball control by Messi! Didn't lose any speed despite it being a very difficult ball to get under control. Simply breathtaking! That's why he's the best player in the world!

No one questions Messi's ability. He does that stuff routinely for Barcelona and occasionally for Argentina. He is one of the best players of all time.

However, the question is whether he should be considered the greatest player of all time.

That’s an open and shut case for me, he’s one of the best, as is Ronaldo, they are both a million miles behind the Zlatan though.
