TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR TO PLAY MLS ALL-STARS
Posted on 15 April 2015 - 16:00

We are delighted to announce that we will compete in the 2015 AT&T Major League Soccer All-Star Game in July.

The annual showcase will see us come up against an MLS All-Star team comprising the best players from the league and will take place at dingdong's Sporting Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids, on Wednesday, July 29, kick-off 9pm local time (2am Thursday UK time).

This will be the 20th edition of the MLS All-Star Game with the first contest taking place at Giants Stadium in 1996 when the Eastern Conference faced the Western Conference.

The fixture eventually evolved into the current system where the league annually invites a club from overseas to participate. Previous opponents have included Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester United and AS Roma.

Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino said: "We'd like to thank Major League Soccer for the invitation to take part in the 2015 All-Star Game.

"The fact that this will be our only fixture outside of Europe during pre-season says a lot about how we view this game.

"We enjoyed three tough matches last summer in North America and the quality of football in MLS continues to grow every year.

"Pre-season is an important time for us and we are looking forward to being a part of one of the biggest events on the US football calendar.

"We know the quality of the facilities will be top-class and we see this fixture against the best players from MLS as good preparation."

“The AT&T MLS All-Star Game continues to be one of the most entertaining and widely anticipated traditions for our League and for our sport in North America,” said MLS President and Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott. “We are excited to welcome another world-class opponent in Tottenham and look forward to a competitive match and a tremendous week of events. We know that the Colorado Rapids, one of our inaugural clubs, will be great hosts and that dingdong’s Sporting Goods Park will impress both the fans in the stadium and television viewers throughout the world.”

Ticket information will follow in due course...

What a crock of brick!!!
I don't care how many extra US fans we get (it will be fudge all lets be honest).
Look at our finances in the other thread. Out commercial income has barely grown regardless how many of these pointless tours we do.

Way to fudge up the start of next season.

Spurs is one of the more popular EPL teams in the US (there is data around, too lazy to dig it up), specifically because of our US investments/tours/players. Yedlin's 10 minute sub made quite a few media articles in the US.

Our commercial income has hardly grown in what sense?

dingdongs Sporting Goods Park .....lovely name for a stadium

Not sure this was a wise move TBH. Not so much the game itself, but the timing of it with regards to how our pre-season is already looking and the end of season trips to Australia and Malaysia. The team looks tired, right now and the summer break is getting shorter and shorter.

Great, we've Spursed up pre-season then. Hopefully one year we'll do everything possible (ins/outs, tours etc.) to start the season as well as possible without worrying about the business side of things. Surely a better solution would've been to host a mini tournament at the Lane with 3 MLS teams.

I wonder if anyone at the Club is aware that we might have to play an EL-Qualifier on July 30...

Not if we end up losing all the remaining matches. On current form, it looks possible. In fact, I won't be surprised if we lose to Malaysia who are ranked 164 in FIFA rankings !

It has been a long time since we got linked to big-name players. You do have to wonder what is our aim for next season.

A weekend in Munich watching us getting thrashed by Madrid & Bayern, that would be awesome

Christ mate .. it's either we are playing nobodies who do nothing for our preseason, or we are getting thrashed?

It's a short travel distance, very good opponents (who won't be at 100%), very good exposure commercially ..

and an immense stadium and loads of beer, sounds fricken awesome to me

So if this tournament is the weekend of Aug 1st and 2nd I assume that means no annual home pre-season friendly as next season's PL fixtures start on Aug 8th
