Africa Cup of Nations switching to summer

Guess it's not too big an upheaval for African football, seeing as half the continent is in each hemisphere.

Good to have something to watch in odd years (cf WCs and Euros in even years)

That is an excellent selling point. I hardly ever watched the AFCON as usually there is other club football on which holds my interest. In the middle of the summer, when I am getting a little antsy with the lack of football on TV this would sate my footballing thirst .

Seriously though it is a great idea which might generate more worldwide interest in the tournament. At the moment I don't think it is generating the interest it potentially could outside of Africa as it is competing with league fixtures.

What do our African posters think of this change?

It will be very nice to see Victor being his beast like self, on the television.

I suspect the winter World Cup brought issues to a head. Weather apart, probably a good thing.

It doesn't make a difference. It just means it will be hotter when they are hosted in northern Africa (where June-Jul is summer), but cooler when they are in southern Africa (where June-Jul is winter)

It may be the sort of competition that terrestrial TV in the UK could afford to televise too... good move in my opinion

hmmm, i might watch 5 minutes of this when I'm flicking between Golf and Cycling in a dull summer.

Cameroon was stripped of hosting the 2019 edition today due to lack of preparation. South Africa and Morocco the favorites to take over.

They were preparing for a 16 team tournament in Jan/Feb. Last year they were informed they were hosting a 24 team tournament in the summer.

Or a bit wetter or dryer if on the equator.

So the powers that be complained for years that the Africans were being stubborn in keeping their tournament in the northern winter. They finally get the move they wanted and then create a new tournament that clashes with it.

There is something about sports administrators. The ICC (cricket) wanted to promote the global game and just when some associate nations started causing upsets and becoming competitive they cut the number of teams in the world cup
