RSS earns its spurs

January 11 - Rope and Sling Specialists (RSS) has completed load tests on three lifting frames that will be used as part of a retractable football pitch in London.

SCX Group was selected to provide the retractable football pitch for Premier League football team Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium at White Hart Lane.

The 62,000-seater stadium, a part of the Northumberland development project, is scheduled for completion later this year. Integral to the multipurpose design is a retractable grass field with an artificial surface underneath that will be used for NFL International Series (American football) matches.

The real turf pitch will be rolled in and out of the stadium in three sections; each section weighs over 3,000 tonnes and is driven by 68 electric motors that will roll it along rails on 168 wheels. These wheels were tested in-house by RSS in 10-tonne increments, up to 85 tonnes, using an Enerpac hydraulic press.

The whole pitch, which is split lengthways, can be rolled out in just 25 minutes.

RSS tested the three frames, one of which was used for the installation of pitch trays at the stadium and needed to be uprated from 27-tonnes to 35-tonnes working load limit (WLL)

Each frame was tested using a 150-tonne-capacity mobile crane from PP Engineering; four 35-tonne-capacity 2,000mm wire-rope slings; soft eyes for each end; and four 25-tonne alloy bow shackles.

Steve Hutin, managing director at RSS, said: "When I'm watching matches on the television at White Hart Lane next season I'll be thinking of the integral role RSS played in keeping the project on track."

Too shiny to be flooring, what is that metal beam for? Seats won't be mounted on it? It made me think, has anyone pioneered (tried) bench seating in stadiums? Could get more punters in and create a bit more of an old stadium atmosphere. Is it precluded by PL or national stadium laws?

It's a platform that covers the gap between the pitch and the stands and can be raised/lowered depending on which surface is in use.
 
I just love how we can see live feeds of our new home and have regular updates from that Chris guy and from the club. I am not certain as didnt keep an eye on the Emirates but I doubt they would have had the technologies available (drone cams) and the accessiblity to watch the build of the stadium.

It's like watching your builders on your home construct your new build, the only downside is I guess you are going to have a big fcuk off bill at the end just to move in to your house.
 
Was anyone else expecting one tier stand behind the goal to be slightly bigger? Sure it will look amazing when finished but doesn't look as imposing as I was expecting it to. How does it compare to say the kop stands are Dortmund and Anfield?

Encouraging news from Levy last week pretty much confirming the stadium build will be on time.
 
In some images it does look a little shallow to me too but iirc there was a side by side graphic with the single tier from Dortmunds ground and it was comparable
 
I think the sunken angle of that stand compared to the others and also the roof piece in the middle looking like it’s broken up doesn’t do it the right justice. These two little fellas at the top of the stand should give you some perspective of size!

One word...scale. As one entity it doesn't look big. But seeing one person, or imagining sitting at the top looking down over 17,000 other people...it will be epic. That's a whole towns population. Photos won't capture it entirely, need to add in your imagination...but once finished I don't think it will let you down.

I think Levy is confident we will be able to play games from next season, but the stadium may not be finished in its entirety. The lounges etc will be done last you'd think. Still the stand framework to complete before the roof can go up, and the aim was to get that up by end of Jan - two weeks. The other core element is getting the innovative pitch in. With the roof on and pitch working, everyone will feel confident. The contractors have to push tho still massive amounts to do.
 
This is it, do you want to be at the top of that monster, in the middle, or at the bottom? I am so looking forward to sitting there (should we get a seat there which I'm sure we will). Also, the away fans will be in the North tier, which was the family stand. Bad move from Spurs there? I thought it would make sense to have the 17,000 hardcore fans next to the away fans. Probably a safety thing haha!

The police want to be able to send the away fans down Northumberland Park to avoid trouble. The other option would have been the SE corner, but I think we'd rather have that for ourselves.
