Like I said previously if you achieved the criteria to qualify for both, the CWC trumped Uefa - that shows what the order was objectively. You also had to win something in order to qualify for the CWC making it harder to achieve - this is a time when the FA Cup was seen as almost as big a prize as the league.

But wasn't it also the case that only league champions qualified for European cup then 2nd/3rd place qualified for Uefa Cup?

The year we won the fa cup for example I think we finished 10th but Uefa would have been teams finishing 2nd/3rd.

Maybe my opinion is based more on memories of some really big Uefa Cup finals

It probably seems difficult to believe now but back in 50/60s travelling abroad was a massive adventure for clubs with many problems with travel arrangements, accommodation and food along with dodgy referees and food poisoning. I think Liverpool where the first team to take their own food and water with them.

The year prior to winning the cup winners cup we were 3rd in the league and would have won it if Bill Nicholson had changed his tactics against Ipswich (champions) as team wanted. We beat Ipswich at their ground 5-1 in the charity shield that year.

yeah, say what you want about qualification criteria, but it's not that long ago since we hoped to enter the UEFA cup by getting the least amount of bookings and sendoffs. CWC edges it for me.

Bet you have some great memories of those glory years. The guy who used to live over the road from me had some great stories to tell.

Nationally win the cup was massive virtually everyone knew the result when only football fans knew about the leagues. It was the only game apart from a few internationals that were broadcast live.

It's funny because it was only the other day I was wondering why the FA cup was so prestigious compared to any other nations cup competition.

No problem with our performance last night. Like many have said you do what you have to, to get over the line. But I don't think it's fair to compare yesterday's result with other finals. In all other finals we were up against teams that were better than us where we would not have been favourites. Teams that would go on to win bigger trophies. Yesterday was the first final in recent memory where the two teams were evenly matched. That is an important context to our win rather than the way we won.

There are few, if any sports that caters to the tribal nature of our brains more that football does. It's easy to understand while at the same time as (overly) complex as you want to make it. It's not that easy to have and present "expert" opinions about lacrosse or pole vaulting. And kicking something will always be more impressive than throwing something.

Yesterday was the first final I knew we would before a ball was kicked
Partly because United are cluelless
But mainly because it’s been tunnel vision
It’s been the focus of the team for a long time (in footballing terms)
We have never managed that
