*** The official 2025/26 Premier League thread ***

Bowen is their only decent player, and even he looks bang average now. That chance he missed.... I think the ball is still rising and heading for the ISS.

Standard of football across the board is going down, but the Premier League seems to be descending at a rapid pace.

At least other leagues are technical.
I think it's fascinating how the game is evolving in England. I don't particularly like it but it's very interesting. For many, many years Charles Hughes and POMO were pretty much derided as a relic of the past and football-kryptonite. Now, some of the principles he advocated for are being embraced again.

Admittedly, I haven't looked at Hughes' theories in too much detail and I do detest the sort of long ball football that was very prevalent in the 80s and early 90s. That said, it would seem to me that passing around aimlessly is one way not to score goals - it's got to be quick, incisive and primarily forward. Knocking it back around or sideways, as we saw on Sunday and under Conte for the last months of his reign, just results in the opposition getting back into shape and us being unable to break them down.

I've got time for all styles and ideologies. What stands out to me is the lack of quality of player, there was a period last night where the ball was just shanked backwards and forwards, nobody attempted to control it and pass.

Kudus for example stands out for us partly cause he's able to control a football, now that's like a USP. Maybe it all adds to the perception of a lack of support in the stadium, watching a match and there's only 1 or 2 players who can receive a ball and do something with it is not getting bums off seats. I know we're not a good a team as previously but even in lean years we'd have decent technical ability, and mental ability to a degree.
