The Official 2016/17 Premier League Thread

Thank you for all your letters. Here's the details from the PL website on CL qualification via EL victory:

How qualification for English teams may change were United to win the UEL:

  • If Man Utd win the UEL and finish in the top four of the Premier League, the top four PL teams will all qualify for the UCL group stage unless the 2016/17 UCL winners fail to qualify for the group stage via their domestic championship finishing position. Then Man Utd, as UEL winners, would go into the UCL play-off round stage.
  • If Man Utd win the UEL and finish outside the top four of the Premier League, the top three PL teams will qualify for the UCL group stage, the fourth-placed team will qualify for the UCL play-off round and Man Utd will qualify for the UCL group stage unless the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League winners fail to qualify for the group stage via their domestic championship finishing position. Then Man Utd would go into the UCL play-off round.
  • If Man Utd win the UEL their place in the UEL third qualifying round for winning the EFL Cup would go to the next-highest ranked team not qualified for UEFA competitions in the Premier League.
So, yeah, we want a United win and enough points to push Liverpool and Arsenal out of the top four, where they will be guaranteed happy days in the EL next season.

Agreed. Though even if they dont push Liverpool out of 4th, Liverpool still have a tricky play-off, hopefully against Sevilla or Roma

it should be a comfortable win, but they are way better than west ham so who knows, on our day we can lose to anyone

That's from the PL website? You'd hope they would get it right but there's a couple of problems there.

On the first point (Man Utd finish in the top four) that's correct if Man Utd finish 4th but if Man Utd finish 3rd (which admittedly looks unlikely) the top 4 wouldn't all qualify for the group stage - the 4th placed team would enter the CL play-off.

And the final point is not at all clear. Reading it you might think that if Man Utd win the EL their EL place passes to another team and England would still have 3 entrants in the EL. But that wouldn't be right - there would only be 2 English teams in the EL (and 5 in the CL) and Man Utd's EL place, at whatever stage they had qualified, would be lost.

It's this kind of comment that bugs me. Any team can lose to another "on their day" West Ham played to stop us in their own ground. Small team mentality.

Mourinhio has Man Yoo playing like this too. They sit back.

It will be another tight game. But I'm confident.they are unbeaten for a long time because they are more about defending. 14 draws says it all.

I said you were the man for this kind of info.

Thought the same about that last point, it made out that 8th place had a shot at EL football, which I am sure isnt correct
