The Cricket Thread

I just don't see what is meant to be so good about Bethell. I've watched him about twenty times both Test and IPL and everytime I see him he flops yet all I ever hear on commentary is how talented he is.

Even first innings his 70 odd was a real struggle trying to watch him get going. What is meant to be so good about him? I'm genuinely asking, I'm assuming all the games I've seen of him I've just been unlucky in not seeing the best of him.....

I’d be a bit disappointed if his reasoning is linked to being suspended for the last test.
He said the reasons can come later so let’s see. Huge loss though.

Hmmmmmmmm I absolutely love Stokes, but this all smacks of ego driven performative stuff.

I don’t really follow cricket anymore, but happened to see Stokes for the first time in maybe a year on Sky Sports News a couple of days. The bloke looks ill. I was shocked when I saw him.

Weekend has been a clusterfcuk all in all, terribly handled and what is now, regardless of Stokes and that circus, defeat.

I think after defending them for a long time, they should all go from the management. Dreadful handling of everything from Key downwards

Yet they moved Gay down to no.5 with other players ahead of him who were also more inclined to go hard at the ball aswell.....

Yeh, not sure that matters much, Gay strike rate in limited over cricket is huge, so he can smash the new ball to all places. With all respect, given the set up of the mid match announcement and all that surrounded it, him opening the bat for only the 4th time in 100+ tests tells me something something different than "we wanted to get on top of the new ball"

Fair enough mate, I'm inclined to take it at face value as he doesn't particularly strike me as ego driven to that extent - would have thought he'd want to do whatever gave England the best chance of winning his final test match tbh....

I think the timing of the announcement says the opposite for me. Yesterday descended into a mess

Guaranteed to walk out infront of a full crowd of love on Sunday rather than Monday when people would likely stay away regardless.....

Agree with this, it was plain weird. But from what Stokes said yesterday, it was 'the team' that dictated the announcement when and how it was done rather than him (in terms of the release of the video etc)....

I think thats even worse, team looks out of control. GHod knows who has a handle on this stuff

I think that the batting performance last night summed up the McCullum/Stokes era absolutely perfectly. By which I mean it was hugely entertaining but ultimately unbelievably foolish, naive and guaranteed to fail.

It has been clear for a long time that slogging doesn’t win you many test matches. I worry for the state of English batting going into the next few years, particularly since Root can’t go on forever, largely because so many of them just come in and swing at everything. Brook is surely the most embarrassing example of this.

Stokes has been a magnificent player for England and I’ve loved watching him play. I can’t help wondering if his ego and refusal to compromise has held him back from what he COULD have achieved as an England Test Match captain: namely battering the Aussies both home and away.
