The Cricket Thread

Think todays 27/9 speaks volumes about the poor state of English test cricket and the the longer form of the game at county level.
Its dying

Picks stokes when he can't bowl is mental, bloke is decent but if he fails with the bat he won't now make it up with the ball.

There is so much wrong with it at the minute and Bayliss is the main issue now

Australia could find themselves in hot water after footage during day three of the third Test against South Africa appeared to show Cameron Bancroft using a foreign object on the ball.

Bancroft was seen trying to rough up one side of the ball with a small piece of yellow material taken from his right hip pocket.

Slow-motion replays, both on TV and broadcast on the big screen at Newlands in Cape Town, appeared to show Bancroft then putting the small object into his underwear in an apparent attempt to hide it

English umpires Richard Illingworth and Nigel Llong did walk over and talk to Bancroft at the time, and he produced what appeared to be a black sunglasses bag from his right pocket, not the object seen previously

Although the umpires appeared satisfied with Bancroft's explanation on the field at the time and allowed play to continue, with no change to the ball, match officials could decide to review the footage further.

Reverse swing has played a major part of this series, and players can increase that by roughing up the ball with foreign objects, which is strictly prohibited in cricket

I agree and it all down to the desire for all the one day cricket we have today, it does not allow the batsman to become anything more then sloggers. And it shows that in the test arena.

BREAKING: Smith and Warner stand down

Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner have stood down for the remainder of the third Test against South Africa.

Tim Paine will lead the side for the rest of the Test.

Both Smith and Warner will both still take to the field in today's play

Smith and Warner stand down

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland: "This Test match needs to proceed, and in the interim we will continue to investigate this matter with the urgency that it demands.

As I said earlier today, Cricket Australia and Australian cricket fans expect certain standards of conduct from cricketers representing our country, and on this occasion these standards have not been met."

Well and truly caught with their pants down. Embarrassing for them. If this was Pakistan the Aussies would be ripping them to shreds for cheating. Wonder if they were doing it in the Ashes?

Why? They must have subs who can come on.

They can't bring on a sub for an on-going test match. It will be interesting to see who plays the next one.

The quotes and apologies seem to suggest that they think this is just a standard way of gaining an advantage.

Smith said after play that it was a "big mistake" but that he would not stand down. He said the team's "leadership group" had spoken about the plan and "thought it was a way to get an advantage".

They discussed it and decided it was good strategy. They are apologising because they were caught, not because they think it wrong.

Did they just become cheats for the South Africa series? Probably not.

This should become a big scandal. It's not unusual for players to cheat, but it is usually a player doing it one their own, perhaps because they are worried about form and getting dropped. You can sort of understand why a player would be driven by personal fears to cheat. But here we have the national team deciding on cheating as a strategy. Some of the responses from Australia suggest they understand how serious it is, even if Smith doesn't.
