Social media in general is an absolute cancer on society. It’s literally rewired people’s brains. The worst aspect now is it’s almost impossible to completely avoid it. The ban on under-16s is something I 100% support as a father with two teenagers. I don’t really count old-school message boards such as this in the same way as your Twitter/X, Instagram, TikTok, and YT, etc.
Sadly it is boith unavoidable and a very, very real part of how things get 'done' in the world. Apalling as that might be to acknowledge!
I have said for the past 15 years it needs to be a specific area of media studies which is taught in schools with regards to uses, ramifications, how it can be positive and also how to disengage from it. Social media is a tool, as is everything about it. The biggest thing for me would be the teach the differential between news and 'content'. These companies are very clever in how they've re-wired us. Instead of shouting at it, we need to understand it and mitigate its negative powers...
