Edit: Imo there are very few Strikers that can possibly come in and 'replace' Rvp. He was just that good for them.

Yes and it is phased in. Money spent on transfers now will not count against FFP. It may well be that the younger players that they are signing are on lower wages than the established players that they are letting go which would put them in a better position under FFP.

Pretty sure that isn't the case. I was fairly sure that spending from last summer onwards counted towards FFP

The first FFP monitoring period started at the beginning of the 2011 season so we are in the middle of it really. It looks like the City and Chelsea accountants have found away around or they don't give a fudge about it.

Its the latter because FIFA and UEFA are spineless tossers who will do fudge all to teams who break the FFP rules for fear of them setting up a rival European League.

I think they have made it clear they will not comply with the spirit and possibly the actual rules.

The biggest problem is that the rules have that "going in the right direction" clause. So if they overspend £200 million last year, £150m this year and £120m next year they are going in the right direction. I suspect this will mean UEFA are reluctant to ban them and face legal action. City are also putting in all the sponsorship deals from other family owned businesses. Again, this breaks the fair market value rules, but UEFA will have to argue that City can't have sponsorship deals at the same level as United, Real and Barca. I can't see UEFA taking on rich clubs and their army of lawyers, so expect fines.

Madrid plays Van der Vaart card in Modric face-off

Real Madrid did Tottenham a favour two summers ago by selling Spurs Rafael Van der Vaart for a cut-price fee. Bayern Munich had earlier attempted to sign the Dutchman for close to €20m, but the Madrid giants ultimately came to an agreement with the London club and its manager at the time, Harry Redknapp.

The deal taking Van der Vaart to Tottenham was worth €11m. This €9m discount can be seen as a favour from Florentino Pérez to Daniel Levy, the Spurs chairman, who, despite his reputation as a fierce negotiator, will surely not forget this act of kindness from his Madrid counterpart.

The move was completed on 31st August 2010, the last day of the transfer window, and had to be vetted by the Premier League, as the necessary paperwork was ruled to have arrived ten minutes late. However, the transfer was eventually given the green light.

This precedent should play into Real Madrid’s hands and points to the good relationship between the two clubs, in spite of the inevitable struggle that has erupted over the Modric deal.

Besides giving the Londoners a bargain on Van der Vaart, Real Madrid also paved the way for Tottenham to bring in Emmanuel Adebayor on loan last summer, when both clubs had been in the running to capture the Togo striker.

Mourinho had been delighted with the marksman’s performances in a Madrid shirt the previous campaign and was considering signing him as the club’s third striker. But Tottenham was also in the picture, and ultimately got its man after Madrid withdrew from the chase.
