Ryan Mason

I can not believe people are concerned with what team someone supported as a kid. I would have played for any professional team that would have had me and anyone who thinks different are deluded or didn't really care about playing football.

I don't know, I could never fully get behind King. Being a Millwall supporter, I just couldn't shake off the doubt that, like his old schoolfriend Terry, he might be a racist.

Great an other bias stereotyping of Millwall fans. I know many and very few are racist and those that are dislike everyone who's not born a couple of mile from the ground, black. brown, yellow, blue, green or white, or none of your family worked in docks.

Did we win all the games then in spite of them???

I'm not arguing we have a better midfield now but Mason and Bentelab were better than McCarthy and Barty when we played Everton for example that season and Mason was excellent vs Arsenal for example that season even with Crapoue playing alongside him....

Looking at our goals conceded record that season, in some games I would have to say yes.

Personally I'm a Mason fan. Check out this video which shows the majority of his touches against Sunderland last season - the game in which he got injured.

For me it showcases his strengths and why I like him as a player, if he can maintain his best form. He always plays with his head up, always looking for a forward pass, can execute a good arsenal of short/medium/long passes, and makes good runs from deep into goal scoring positions.

Think his biggest weaknesses are finishing, defending and consistency. But personally I'd really like to see him stick around for one more season to see if he can stay consistent and injury free, and stake his claim as a dependable squad option.

Can anyone really watch that video and disagree that he has real strengths?

I was at that game and he was, by some distance, our MOTM. A real shame he got injured scoring the winner. He never seemed to get back to that level later on in the season.

I thought Mason & Carroll were poor today and offered nothing defensively or going forward, this made things very hard for the inexperienced defenders. The transformation when Lamela came on made watching bearable.

Premier League 2015/16 Games Points Points per game
With Mason or Carroll starting 12 11 0.92
Without Mason or Carroll starting 26 59 2.27

This is why we need to strengthen the squad, and Mason and Carroll need to be further down the pecking order.

Can you show the stats with Carroll finishing

Reason I ask is because Carroll somehow got the blame for the Saudi Sportswashing Machine result at home.... Yet he wasn't on the pitch when we conceded the two goals

Also worth highlighting that the Mason starts at the beginning of the season were when everyone was settling in and he was one of our better performers... It's why stats can be used to show anything however you want

So now it's the time of the year they started that is to blame. How on earth does that make fudging sense? I suppose the weather was worse also, making the pitch difficult for them? Seriously! The point is (literally) that we got fewer points when our backups started, than when they did not play. Period.

What are the stats when Mason i) wasn't carrying his injury and ii) was playing with Dier or Dembele (i.e. not having to carry Carroll)?

Poor Carroll, in order to defend your client you have abandoned him to the wolves.

In fairness both are Pony and nothing will be changing that.

These preseason use-the-squad games are pretty meaningless - unless you're Carol, Mason and Chadli and you need to stake a claim. But the team around you is unsettled, full of youth players, so hardly ideal. Regardless Mason and the others need to perform now if they want to be in with a shout of the first team.

I am no fan of Mason at all but you have a point, having worked with stats i have always said they very rarely tell the whole story. They are often used to try and push a point/agenda that suits the teller.

Not saying that happens on here though :D

My thoughts are that Mason is fine as a squad player... in fact better than "fine" and probably "decent". I would say that he is a top 12 level PL starting player and can cover a few positions. He isn't as good as Dembele and (more importantly) he doesn't have that same strength that Dembele has in being able to receive the ball when under pressure, look after it and turn defence into attack but there are very few of those players in World football (Man Utd look like they are about to pay £100 million plus huge agent fees for one of them)

Mason is probably currently second or third in line to both our number 8 and number 10 roles if we want to keep other players in their best positions. If we can improve on Mason to cover those positions then happy days, but based on the season before last (when Mason was playing without injury) it will not be particuarly easy to bring in a squad player who is better than Mason and it will be even less easy to keep that player happy with a mere squad role.

I wouldn't mind seeing us bring in a specialist number 10 option like Younus Malli, but even if we do this I think we would need to bring in an alternative at number 8 before we could let Mason go.

Surely the main CM in a side that came 5th is good enough to be starting for a top 5 side, rather than a top 12 side?

He also kept Dembele out of the side on form for Poch's first year (prior to his injury). Yes, Dembele has edged ahead now, but Mason is 4 years younger and I think perfectly capable of reclaiming that place.
