Roberto De Zerbi *OFFICIAL*

40 next month
Ok just wondered whether it would affect the judgement on Chelsea, I think it’s borderline. I’m late 40’s and remember Chelsea as a yo-yo club then bates and Harding bank rolling them to the point of extermination, before Roman swooped in and saved the day.

The spending WAY beyond their means started long before Roman and took them from that yo-yo status to a European team.

I just don’t respect that model

Its not just under Abramovich - this goes back to when Ken Bates bought the club for £1 back in 1982. He had a number of "investors" who he never identified who poured a ton of money (money laundering some suggested) into the club. At that time Chelsea were nothing. Spurs would beat Chelsea routinely up to then. Suddenly in 1983 they manage to sign Eddie Niedzwiecki from Wrexham, Joe McLaughlin from Morton, Nigel Spackman from Bournemouth, Kerry Dixon from Reading, Pat Nevin from Clyde and John Hollins from Arsenal. Since then they have spent roughly £2.5 billion more on players than Spurs who pretty much only ever spend what they earn. Not a very level playing field is it?

As did we pre Sugar though. Does our 1991 Cup win not count?

Chelsea qualified for Europe every season from their FA Cup win in 1997 to when Abramovic bought them.

My Dad tells me they used to carry buckets outside the stadium saying save our bridge.

I could tell you many stories...electric fences via Ken Bates...you know the concert security company Showsec? They were literally formed across the street from The Shed (well, y'know, up and across the street) as the founders recruited Chelsea boot-boys! The racism was only matched by West Ham (Chelsea's was actually worse IMO)...that 'stadium' used to be a giant brickhole with just that giant East Stand...Robbo is right, they were absolutely bankrupt and about to eat it when Abramovich took over. The main reason he took it over was because West London/Chelsea felt more desirable than N17; he met Levy and discussions were had.

Thanks for the cue @robp135!

If you've not heard it yet I've just done a pod - looking back at away games at Chelsea in the 90s - but have taken it beyond the facts and figures to explore their rise with Matthew Harding's chequebook - I think he's very much our Irving Scholar - and how that fundamentally changed the dynamic of our rivalry with them. Please give it a listen and let me know what you think...

I think you were a bit kinder about the Spurs fans response to Hardings death than I recall. I seem to remember songs about how he should have took the train.

Really says the right things .. it's normal, everyone wants to see big teams fail (implies we are big), it's motivation for players
he's a smart guy for sure
right now he has an urgent and narrow task so is responding accordingly

given his past and penchant for being confrontational and outspoken, I don't expect to see the same dezerbi next season
i hope dezerbi gets the players he wants otherwise it will all become another conte/mourinho ending

Not going to relax until we get 1 more point. But he’s done brilliantly so far and I think he’s the right manager for us. He has a chip on his shoulder. It’s what we need. We need to back him.
Yeah, if he can do this with our injury plagued squad, think what he can do with some quality additions, and a large squad to cover our consistent injuries.

Let's hope so - keeping us up would give him a huge amount of goodwill from all sides of the club (fans/players/higher ups) so it should set us on the right path going in to the summer/next season. However, worth noting that coming in to an extreme situation like a relegation battle and succeeding is not always a precursor to onward progression - I'm sure there's plenty of examples of a manager coming in, beating the drop then not kicking on.
