Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

There is another option, fully embrace and be a leading voice, help guide Europe and spread peace and prosperity from sea to shining sea, be the torch of morality in the darkness of nationalism.

If you don't like nationalism how did it make you feel the remainers singing the Scottish and Welsh national anthems in the house of parliament last night.

Not to mention something that was described as the national anthem of Europe(why Europe needs one when it is not a nation I do not know)

Is it nationalism you really hate?

Rather than dismiss anyone, how about outline why Chevez was "one of the greatest travesties in the history of mankind."
Destruction of and theft from the middle classes, ruined industries, destroyed foreign investment, corruption, authoritarianism, did nothing more than ride the oil price and died just in time to avoid seeing what happened when it crashed and left the situation he created.

Hardly lives up to your billing. I wouldn’t disagree with most of your points. But he also galvanised a nation and made provision for the poor. It’s an interesting story of strong ideals and ethics which started well but ultimately failed for many of the reasons you outlined.

Not sure what he stole from the middle classes?

The story of the failed coup, where Chavez was kidnapped in a helicopter by CIA funded concerns, only for the people to rise up on the streets, and force the US to fly him back, is a worthy anecdote.

What I admire is his ethics, determination and his successes. But his story is fascinating as it also illustrates the perils of socialism and personal ego.

He destroyed an entire country and convinced the people to love him for doing so! It's one of the most disgusting abuses of power in living memory. Right up there with the USSR and East Germany.

He stole everything from the middle classes. First their money, then their jobs, then their freedom - the age old story of communism.

It was a parallel to what Europe retaking the UK after it voted to leave would be
No, no it is not. That is a ridiculous post. Europe is not retaking the UK, surrendering to it or subjugating it. This is the language of war and hysterical nonsense. And certainly suggesting recolonising Ireland to solve a Brexit sticking point doesn't deserve a serious response.

I have no issue with people liking something and singing songs about it.

My issue is a thought process which believe people can be judged based solely on where they were they born, and worse, that this could make them superior in any way.

I wasn't. I was suggesting the remain British vs home rule vs partition vs independence debates 100 years ago are quite similar to the remain EU vs BINO vs NI-only vs leave debates now. And specifically that the logic for BINO is the same as that that was being made for giving the Irish only 'home rule'.

Britain and France learnt the hard way a lot of lessons of how to handle post-colonial independence movements - basically give the maximum and be gracious about it. The EU's resistance is more akin to early British and French efforts, which failed so badly

You did.
Re-colonise Ireland then and give them 'home rule'

Boris Johnson’s suspension of UK Parliament is unlawful, judges at Scotland’s highest civil court rule

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-49661855

EDIT
Boris Johnson’s suspension of the UK Parliament is unlawful, Scotland’s highest civil court has ruled.

A panel of three judges at the Court of Session found in favour of a cross-party group of politicians who were challenging the prime minister's move.

The decision overturns an earlier ruling from the court, which said last week Mr Johnson had not broken the law.

But it will not immediately affect the current suspension of Parliament, which started in the early hours of Tuesday.

Doesn't really make much difference. It was going to the Supreme Court one way or another.

Gives the noisy minority something else to shout about for a few days, I suppose.
