Yes I think Dier would have got it if starting.
I tend to view these forced captaincy changes as a bit more 'ceremonial', for want of a better word. I think it's a reflection of Davies' longevity and reliability in the senior squad and nice to see him being recognised, rather than any particular attributes he brings as captain. But if he does display leadership qualities by dint of the role, then all the better.
