This is a very annoying performance and result. We needed to win to stay in touch with our rivals in the top 4 race. Instead, we failed to lift our game and had do settle for this draw. In fact, we were even fortunate to get this draw as Southampton had many chances to score and win this match. We were in good form before this match but we seem to have left that form in Barcelona when we went there for training last week. Not sure why we needed a mid-season training tour like that. It is really disappointing that we only had 2 shots on target against a team in relegation zone like Southampton.
Credit to Kane for scoring his 21st league goal of the season. But he should have scored from the chance he had in the last minute of the match. Was really annoyed with Alli who worked hard but he dribbled too much and lost the ball on too many occasions. Son had a poor match and hardly touched the ball the whole match. Lamela really should have started this match with Eriksen being out. After our attack improved after Lamela came on. Lamela should have done better with 1 or 2 goal scoring chances but he didn't have much time to win us the game.
Our midfield had a poor game. Dembele and Dier failed to control the midfield as much as we would have liked. With Eriksen out, we were always going to struggle to create chances and so it was proved. Sissoko had another disappointing match. Pochettino should have started Lamela instead of Sissoko. Also, with us badly looking for a goal, it would have been wise to replace Sissoko instead of Son. Also, not sure why Pochettino brought on Wanyama when we badly looking to score.
Our defence had a mixed game. Vertonghen and Sanchez were put under too much pressure by Southampton. We badly missed the leadership of Alderweireld in defence. Southampton had far too many chances and looked like scoring on many occasions. Sanchez was unfortunate to score the own goal but had an match-saving block late in the match. Vorm didn't really have too many important saves but did his part well.
With this draw, we have now dropped points against all the current bottom 3 teams (Southampton, WBA , Swansea), Burnley and Watford. With our poor record against top 6 teams away, all these dropped points against these shyte teams will come back to affect our top 4 race. In recent years we have greatly improved our results against the weak teams to make up for our poor record against the top 6 teams away. But we have dropped too many points against these weak teams this season. With tough matches against ManU, Liverpool and Arsenal coming, this was a bad timing to lose points. Let's hope we will improve and step up our perfomance in the coming matches.
